Exchange money uk or patts ?

Recommended Posts

hi all

new to this forum but not pattaya , have got trip booked and wheels down 14th sept but just wondering what kind of rate you are getting around town ?

Thanks Wolfie

What currency would you be asking about? I'd guess GBP, but you really ought to make that clear.

There are lots of sites that give you exchange rates at Thai Banks for various currencies. Try this one SCB Currency Exchange Rates

As to the rest of your question, my understanding is that you are always better off exchanging your money (GBP, USD, AUD, EUR) into THB here in Thailand, rather than in your home country.

Yes, there are lots of sites where you can get exchange rates. Pattaya is not different from the rest of Thailand. MM's link is top notch but you can find your own very easily.

Never. Ever. Change any money to baht in your home country. Ever.

Unless your home country is Thailand of course.

I agree with the above, always change your money when you get to Thailand. The current rate in Patts is approx 49baht to the pound.

I find that the TT exchange booths usually give the best rates in Patts.

BTW welcome to the board! :thumbup

Would also recommend traveller cheques as opposed to a big wad! Exchange rate works in favour of sterling cheques as opposed to cash. Its not much more but if your bringing a couple of thousand it makes a difference. Don't make the mistake of the prepaid currency cards. I though this was a great idea and used one on the last trip. The exchange rate at ATMs was crap, worse than cash or travellers cheque plus you've got the added 150 baht ATM fee. Lost a few thousand Baht that could have been better spent elsewhere!

The difference seems to have closed over the years and this statement only applies if you use a denomination >£100/ cheque.

That is assuming 33 baht/cheque charge here in LOS, free TCs in the UK and today's SCB rates.

Good advice and most applicable if you cannot make it before the exchanges close. The exchanges at the airport about 5-6 yrs ago were actually better than those in Pattay but now they are always a few bhat less. I find the best excahnges to be the yellow ones on Soi Bukaow near soi diana and close to the shoe super store.

No way it will ever be a "few baht difference" for changing one pound inside Thailand. A few SATANG definitely - that's why money changers are better than banks for example. But the difference between a bank here and a bank there and a money changer somewhere else is never as much as one baht per pound.

Thank you oh great wise one IN GENERAL. However I have seen it as much as 2 bhat difference at the airport than in Pattaya but yes as I said in general I made the mistake of bhat instead of satang.

Never seen such a thing. If it happened, which I'm sure it has, it represents the different times you checked. Rates change all the time, every day during the week. A bank website like Siam Commercial will give you half a dozen or more rates every day. There's no way that a bank at the airport and a bank in Pattaya will be two baht different at the same time. Check out three or six Thai banks online for the rates, given by time. A bank that offered two or five baht difference within 80 kilometres of each other would go quickly broke. That's a HUGE profit for two people with phones. That's the equivalent of past-posting the gee-gees.

1 You are right it did happen!

2. Considering it takes about 1hr 40 mins to get to Pattaya from the airport and then to get the three S's and get out to get money changed that covers the timing.

3. I am fully aware of the operating systems of the banks exchangers etc

4. TMI you need to get a hobby Joe!

July 1997 and later was the worst of course - it went from 25 to 50 really, really fast, and then bounced around in the mid 40s for weeks, months really. It would change in minutes sometimes, "the rate" was what you got when you got to the front of the queue, probably different than when you were fourth in line.

As of recent on Soi Bukaow I have asked for and got my money back when the girl gave me the check slip and it was a lower rate than the paper notice displayed on her cashier window. When I pointed it out she took it down and no problem giving me my money back . I went on down the street and changed it at the same rate as she was offering but it was the principle! I should have known better that its the thai way but I was just making a lone objection and it made me feel good ha, fool that I am ! she was probably thinking crazy farang.

Changing money hasnt a one line answer. Here IMHO is why.

If you feel that your local currency is having a short term revival then buy overseas currecies as an insurance.

If you are travelling around the area its sometime good to buy US dollars before you come here. This locks in the value and these are the currency of choice in Cambodia and Laos.

If you are the sort that likes cash its enforced savings to buy some currency at home if you see a good rate and lock it in the safe or put under the mattress.

If you come from a smaller and less stable country whos currency has large fluctuations then its a great insurance to have some dollars, pounds or baht in the bottom drawer.

Ok Ok I hear you say that you are losing interest by purchasing currency before ypour trip as well as taking the chance of yours strengthining but like I say, its all part of the holiday planning and peace of mind.
