The "winner that didn't count".

Recommended Posts

If you saw the ladies final from the US Open, you'll no doubt have an opinion about the decision of Umpire Eva Asderaski to apply the 'Hinderance rule' to a clearly heard, early shout of triumph from Williams, before Stousur got her racket to the ball. The Umpire's decision led to the awarding of the point to Stousur......... Which in turn led to another outburst of abuse from Williams to another Umpire in a US open final.

Now there are only 3 females to have achieved the Tennis' top umpiring qualification.......Eva Asderaski is one of those 3.

I understand that doesn't mean that all her calls will be right 100% of the time....... But for me, in any case her qualifications are almost irrelevant. Simply put, she has been charged with the task of controlling the match. She is the Umpire and she should give and she should receive respect.

An Umpires calls can be questioned if a player feels unfairly treated or that the call is mistaken....forcefully if need be.........but politely.

Williams' abuse was so threatening......along the lines of........"If you see me in the hall you better keep out of my way" ............'You're an ugly person inside'. "You're completely out of control'' (I'm thinking 'Hello pot this is the kettle'....) "DON"T you look at me..........Just don't you look". "What I can't express myself?....Hey were in Ameerrica"

............ Ms Asderaski is Greek!

Stousur had to endue all this of course.......Plus the crowd sideing with Williams and cheering her every shot to the heavens........ Plus Williams' anger induced adrenaline rush............and the increasingly agressive grunts everytime she blasted a ball.

The Aussie just played the game. ..............The 'Game' that Williams' thinks she's bigger than.

Almost as stomach turning was the awards ceremony................ Along the lines of.......'We're giving you a half million bonus Serena'....blah blah........."You got upset at one point Serena" 'Yes', says sweet Serena. All smiles "I played a winner that didn't count".

Williams should apologise publicly.

Definitely the most important part of it worth noting. I don't know why they even allow black people to play. You'd never catch white people doing anything disrespectful. Black ladies have no idea of

She's a disgrace and now a bad role model. Nowadays , behaviour like that goes unpunished as standards have slipped. People excuse behaviour like that by calling it passion! And it took the attention away from the great victory by the Australian girl.

I couldn't believe that QPR have made Joey Barton captain. He has been done for a serious assault of sitting on a 16 year olds chest and punching his teeth out. Bad examples for kids.

I like black ladies but find the Williams sisters are an obnoxious duo.

Williams was wrong and I think she'll see that in the replay. She and her father admitted that it didn't matter. Stosur was playing out of her mind.

Yeah, she threw a tantrum, but it was much better than how she dealt with the foot fault situation against Clijsters.

You're a charitable man...and credt to you for that.

For me the fact that she and her father mentioned the obvious but failed to apologise for or mention Serenas' vile treatment of the umpire compounds the matter.

Also I'm not sure she dealt with her temper any better this time.

In the Clijsters match, she went upto the line judge, squeezed a tennis ball, and said she wanted to shove it down her throat. She also used a lot of profanity in her tirade. This was definitely an improvement.

Well, if this weeks' 'dealing' represents, as you say, 'progress' she should definitely get her money back from whatever 'Charm School' Serena's been attending!

Of course when tennis and tantrums come to mind we think of McEnroe.....And I hated him too, I always went emotionally for Borg........But Mac's tantrums were to my memory that of a spoilt 2 yr old who's had his ice-lolly nicked. He was out of order all right , and he did, (like they all do), pick on helpless line judges and umpires and not on the player on the other side of the net who just 'might' retaliate. .....But to my memory McEnroe never threatened with menace like Ms Williams has.

I played squash at an intermediate level. The main difference in squash, apart from the 'frisbee backhand' and the, 'stone skimming forehand' is that the players aim behind them and must share the same space. This rotating around each other had strict rules but would still occasionally get out of hand. I was a 'fair' player, but I recall more than once with an effort of will, deliberately drilling a squash ball into the back of a rule flouting opponent who was gaining an advantage through cheating......... (The ball marks once left a neat 'Z' on an competitors' back............ they called me Zorro after that!).

Heat between players happened and was not always forgotten or forgiven... but players are equals, what's given out can be given back....In spades! I knew not to stand in-front of my opponents shot..Funnily enough my opponents got that message too eventually.

We were all very grateful that inter-club matches had a 'Marker' to award 'strokes' and 'lets' rather than have to sometimes take the law into our own hands. Even if the marker was crap or blatently biased (the home team marked and naturally not everyone was good) we knew to tow the line, and a resort to abuse of the 'Marker' did not enter our minds. We got on with it..'dealt' with it. Even if I thought I lost a match unfairly, I shook hands and didn't lose it twice.......Once on court and again in the dressing room through petulance.

You say no comparison between club squash and a US open. The tensions don't compare. Ridiculous atlas......Well take your view but it's the most suitable comparasion I can personally make. I know how I felt and how much more a loss for my team hurt than an individual league match did.

Whatever, I never thought I was bigger than my team, club, or the Marker or the game..........!

Why should she apologize? Tennis needs more people like this. Many more. I personally enjoy playing tennis. And do quite a bit. But to make it something I can watch on tv, it needs some entertainment value. Serena brings it. If the judge can't take it, she can stay home.

Hmmm. There is this alternate universe where mrlasvegas and joekicker agree on stuff. And we're right in the middle of it.

Beam me up Scottie, but not right now, I think I'm going to enjoy the next few dozen posts where the genteel, sensitive folks who hold their little finger out even when they drink beer try to stick it to the totally correct mrlasvegas.

Cheats? clueless.gif I don't know which was more pathetic - Williams attempt at cheating, or the crowds reaction to her getting called on it.

People can see that sort of shit on Jerry Springer. They watch tennis to see top quality tennis.

No offense, but it's that attitude that's causing problems in society. Not sure what Vegas is like, but in the UK , everybody seems to get abuse for just doing their job, from shop assistants to teachers, bus drivers to car park attendants t5o nurses to fire men. People shouldn't be abused, end of. That umpire did nothing to get physically threatened / bullied by a powerful athlete.

Did one of the other sisters not get shot dead outside a drug dealers house?

Free beer from FLB for the person that in this thread, correctly posts closest the date and time (GMT) before the first TV commercial featuring both McEnro and Williams in the same commercial.

Only posts before the event count. Only one post per person. No change in post.
