bring or buy? Website for Pattaya prices (cameras, computers, etc)

Recommended Posts

Knowing there's a big price disparity for some stuff in farangland vs Pattaya, I've been debating which camera & computer equipment to bring vs buy locally my next trip.

It turns out that one of the computer shops in TukCom is for a major chain that not only has a decent website, but also pretty complete price info as well. For example, I was able to see that pretty much *anything* related to camera equipment seems quite a bit more expensive in Pattaya.

So, here's the shop & website for any other BMs interested in doing some price comparisons to decide "bring or buy?" for their next trip:

IT City - Tukcom Pattaya

5th Floor, Tukcom IT Center

8 Moo 10, Pattaya Tai (South Road), Pattaya, Bang Lamung, Chonburi, 20260

http://www.itcity.co.th

Anyone know of any other websites to get some reliable pricing info?

I'm not in Thailand, but if you're from the USA I'd say just buy the stuff in the USA, at least from what I've seen. You can probably get a better deal and the warranties will be good at home.

Why are you debating whether to buy in Pattaya?

I was contemplating buying a new camera ahead of my current trip and had narrowed the choice down to three. The price here in Patts of those cameras is 20-30 percent higher than Jessops in the UK. In retrospect, I'm a bit annoyed about not buying at Dixons at Heathrow which had my favourite of the 3 cameras at £40 less than the cheapest price I had found anywhere else, including on-line.

I have never seen cameras, laptops etc cheaper here in pattaya than back in australia, especially at the major chains when they are on sale. My American friends tell me that they are even cheaper in the US than in oz so its a no brainer where to buy your stuff I reckon. Also getting something fixed under warranty in thailand can be "challenging" at the best.

I did buy one high end Canon L lens from World Cameras in Tukcom last April:

http://shop.worldcamera.co.th/index.php

(scroll down the page, there are english links to prices.)

The price was better than in Melbourne, but this was just after the tsunami and all the discounting had stopped in Melbourne with prices shooting right up.

Be wary with camera warranties, I did confirm with Canon Australia that they do honour L lens warranties bought overseas (as long as you have the receipt), but apparently they DON'T honour O/S warranties on camera bodies (some story about different body models sold around the world)

Also, there was a lot of discussion on camera forums that Canon was close to stopping even honouring O/S warranties on L lenses, so check in your country.
