A friend of mine arrived without visa ( 30 day stay allowed ) and only here realized she will stay 37 days. She don't want illegally overstay, but also it would be a hassle to make a visarun. Can she do something in the Immigration Office ??

Go to the Immiigration office in Jomtien and ask for a seven day extension. Go early.

Thanx guys for the info.... just to clarify... she can get a 15 or a 7 day extention ??? She has NO visa, just the 30 day stamp...

Papps... do you mean early morning or early in time ??? When is the better choice to go ? Before the 30 stay stamp ends or no matter when ?

Yes she can get a 7 (seven) days extension on a 30 days visa exemption.

She could get a 30 (thirty) days extension if she had a Tourist Visa.

In both case it cost 1,900 baht and she need 1 photo, copies of passport, stamp and departure card, and a proof of address in Pattaya.

I was in Jontien immigration last week for an extension. About 3pm, and took about 15 minutes. (Application is fast but you have ti wait for the one who register payments...)

Don't wait for the last day. Better to go 1 week before. Days will be had to your actual limit date of stay anyway.

No proof of residence is required.

They know most people stay in hotels.

And gimmble, a 15 day extension is only available at land border crossings.

Gabor, Idefix was very lucky to be in and out in 15 mins. I have done it several times and people are queuing out the door. Get there early in the morning or else they might make you come back after their lunch break. If you go in the afternoon you might have to return next day, like I did once.

i went for an extension once to the 30 day Visa waiver. I was told to come back the day I was supposed to leave. You don't actually get an extension as such. Your application for an extension is denied and you are then given 7 days to leave the country.

Not doubting that you were told to come back bn your last day but I've done it 4 or 5 times and usually it was a few days before.

You are correct about the extension being denied. I forgot about that. It is strange. 'No you can't stay for an extra 7 days but we will allow you 7 days to leave, LOL.' TIT

I arrived from Cambodia on Oct 30th and left Nov 30th which turns out to be 32 days. I was fined at the airport 1000 baht.

I had read somewhere that it was 500 baht a day fine but does it affect your next request for a visa? You are afterall on record as an overstayer.

Kinda wondering that myself. I think they'll let it pass as it wasn't egregious.

Not as far as I have heard.

The maximum overstay fine is 20,000 baht...after 40 days, it's the same if it's forty one days or 2 years...20k.

Go early in the day Gabsy, and if possible try to avoid going on a Monday or a Friday.. I would also go when she is 3 days prior to her 30.

Make sure she is not using a month to month count, as some months have a different amount of days in it..

Edit. Should have probably looked at the original date of the OP

I arrived from Cambodia on Oct 30th and left Nov 30th which turns out to be 32 days. I was fined at the airport 1000 baht.

In July, I was scheduled on a flight to AC on the day my visa expired. Because of flight cancellations by Tiger Air, my departure was delayed two days and I was expecting a 1,000 baht fine when I approached Immigration Control. The officer just stamped me through - no fine, no comment from him.

Possibly the reason was that I had a double-entry tourist visa and still had a re-entry on it. A guy on the same flight (and a long-term ex-pat in LOS) suggested the Immigration Control officers aren't worried about minor overstays for those with re-entries remaining on multiple-entry visas. I don't know how true that is.

But no question that I had used up the first sixty days to which I was entitled. Also, the queue at IC was long and that particular officer seemed to be trying to clear people as fast as he humanly could. He may simply have missed it or figured it wasn't worth his while to slow down the clearing process. Intentionally or unintentionally, I was shown mercy that night.

The consensus opinion (on various LOS boards, not just punter boards) seems to be that it doesn't. If an overstay is your only transgression, it won't have a negative effect on your visa application.

Regarding visa extensions while in LOS. Last December, I went early (about 8.15 a.m.) to the Jomtien Immi office to get a 30-day extension on my tourist visa. It was a scene straight out of Dante's Inferno. Already huge queues had formed, with Russians rushing each of the lines, shouting and waving their documents above their heads. It was like the scene at the gate of the U.S. embassy during the fall of Saigon.

My TGF almost got knocked to the floor by one big guy who charged a queue like a U.S. football fullback trying for a first down. I told her, "Forget this," and we went to a visa agency to get the extension. It cost 2,300 baht for them to do it in 24 hours as opposed to 1,900 if you do it yourself. But that extra 400 baht was the best money I ever spent. If I can possibly avoid it, I'll never venture to the Jomtien Immi office again. Far easier to pay an agency to handle it for you. I used the one inside the Queen Vic on Soi 6, but there are plenty of others.

You take a numbered ticket when you go in and sit and wait your turn. If there's no seats and you don't want to stand, there's a place outside where you can sit and buy a drink, snack, have a smoke, etc.

There's also a place there where you can have your photo taken and photo copies made.

There's a Falang working in Immigration that is a very helpful Chap who will make sure you take a ticket for the correct queue.

No queue jumping allowed there but you could be waiting a long time which is why I suggest getting there as soon as the doors open for business. Last thing you want to happen is wait in the queue for hours only to be told come back tomorrow, especially on the last day of your stamp/visa.

Sure beats a border run to Cambodia. I've done loads of those, been to 4 or 5 different Thai/Cambo land border crossings and whilst interesting, not particularly a fun day out.

Yes but you might not realise. Some places it might just be an armed Soldier giving you a quick look up and down. Same on the Cambo side. Repeated on your way back into LOS.

Why do you ask?

I used to use one of the 'Fixers' at a crossing I was using every fortnight and he would bring through anything that I asked him to for me.

Do you mean customs, Thai customs for leaving Thailand?

You certainly go through Immigration, and there are perhaps Cambodian Customs officials but I failed to notice them, I was more interested in getting out of the sun most times.

Do you get an exit stamp leaving at a land crossing? Maybe that's one way to get around an overstay?

Yes, you do. But of course it would still be an overstay.
