cheap ares from london, anyone ever used them

A friend did and he seemed to think they were OK...... good service on the plane.

Cairo a bit chaotic.

He travelled Biz Class though.

Are they so much cheaper than the many options out of London?

I used them last year when I had to return to blighty for a funeral. Nice new planes, food ok and cabin staff ok. Cairo airport was better than I expected and was not too busy when I was there going out and coming back. The only thing I found funny was the security check for connecting passengers, the guy was smoking and when he asked what I had in my top pocket (a pack of tic tacs), politly asked if he could have one. All in all an ok experience and I would have no problem in flying with them again.

I'm thinking of taking them later this year. CAI to BKK is on new 777s and I understand they operate from a brand new terminal in Cairo. Business class is cheap. Only problem I understand is they don;t serve booze onboard but I think I can handle that.

First time i ever visited thailand was with Egypt air, cairo to bangkok and they served alcohol no problem.but that was over twenty years ago so dont know the latest on this.I thought they were a decent enough airline,i had no issues but like i say over twenty years ago, surely if anything things will have improved.

It is indeed a dry airline. Since they are not all Muslims in Egypt maybe the airline just doesn't want a plane full of pissheads on long flights.

You are permitted to bring your own and they'll let you drink it though. Most other airlines would prohibit this

Sadly things have started going downhill in general at least in economy class. My feeling is that the quality peaked some ten years ago when good airlines were already offering personal entertainment systems even in economy class. Since the low-cost airlines took off, we are being nickel-dimed to death. One example is that the Finnish national airline now provides a limited amount of free wine and beer only with meals in economy class on the Bangkok route - otherwise any alcoholic drinks are charged separately.

One of the attractions of Egyptair is cheap business class. I'm thinking of Athens-BKK because I'll already be in that part of Europe. It is less than $2,000 in Business Class including all taxes and a stopover to see the pyramids. The BKK flight is on a quite new 777 with very comfortable business class seats.

THAT'S PROBABLY BECAUSE MOST FINS ARE PISSHEADS AND THEY WANT TO LIMIT THE AMMOUNT OF BOOZE THEY CAN THROW DOWN THEIR THROATS. Having said that I used some of my BA airmiles last year and ended up flying with FINNAIR on the return leg LHR/Helsinki/BKK and they were OK

:rotflmao Oh, that is certainly a factor, since the airline does not have such restrictions on the flights to Japan. At least half the passengers appeared to be Norwegians, though. On the other hand, that was just my most recent illustrative experience. My Emirates flight BKK-HKG-BKK was in the end nothing really special despite high expectations: check-in with all the queuing was horrible, inflight service was slow and harassed, seats were ordinary, personal entertainment system was brilliant, and meal presentation above average. My Singapore Airlines flight BKK-SIN-BKK in August 2011 also felt like quite an ordinary one, while I can still remember how I was totally blown away during my first BKK-SIN-BKK flights in 2001: it was just incredible that they offered in economy class a personal entertainment system, a full meal despite a short flight and great service by incredbly pretty stewardesses; in principle the same elements were there but we were not impressed - afterwards flying Air Asia no longer felt like it would have been an inferior choice. In 2009-2010 Thai Airways also appeared to be much poorer than on my flights 8 years earlier.

Which airlines can now claim to provide intercontinental economy class flights at a better service level and no silly extra fees compared to what they did ten years ago (or when they started operations)? I would definitely consider switching over to use them even if the total travel time would increase.

My information is that Egyptair do not serve alcohol. Have you flown them and been given a drink?

Doh .... A Homer moment! I was thinking of Turkish. Apologies, I did fly Egypt back around 2008 and I seem to remember getting a letter from them stating I could bring personal stocks onboard for consumption in business class.... I didn't bother, no big deal for me ! :-)

  • 2 weeks later...

My wife & I used Egypt Air from Bangkok to New York on January 27, 2011. The flight left BKK and went to Cairo where we changed planes for New York. We were in first class and the plane, flight crew, food and everything else was fine HOWEVER 1-27-11 was the day the shit hit the fan in Cairo. On our approach to Cairo we could see a major riot in the streets with cars burning and total turmoil. There was chaos inside the Cairo Airport as all the major airlines had cancelled their flights to and from Cairo leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The US Embassy got Americans out about 4 days later on charter flights to Jordan at the everyday low cost of $4,000.00 each. What a deal. You can count on them.

We hung out in their first class lounge for several hours until our connecting flight to New York boarded. At this time Egypt Air was the only major airline still serving Cairo. The first class passes Egypt Air gave us in Bangkok helped us get through a very crowded police security check point in the airport quickly and our flight to New York left just 2 hours before Cairo Airport was closed down.

I have no complaint with Egypt Air as they treated us well but I am not interested in any other flights that connect in Cairo.

jballstate, thanks for the good review of Egyptair. I think I'll monitor the political situation there after their presidential elections in June. I think the Cairo airport was closed for less time than BKK when the insurrectionist yellow shirted fuckers took over it. You never Know what can happen to an airport.

I looked at them for May next year as they were advertising £498 from LHR. the total travel time 18hrs put me off a little - just booked again with Budget Air with Etihad for may next year and got £506. short stopovers so cant complain.
