Hostility is the wrong approach.

I always, early in my trip, start a conversation with one I'm not likely to see again on my trip.ie one that is off your beaten track.

Say - no thanks I dont need a suit, how s your business going? How long you been doing this business., do you have a family here blah blah blah. Many times you will find a friendly decent guy behind the salesman.

Crucially get his first name and the address of the shop.

When back on your regular beat and asked reply " I already bought one"

usually the tailor will then say " oh off who? from where? " mohammed on soi 10.

ahh ok.

next time you go past them if bothered again just repeat.

chances are mohammed will be their cousin or they automaticaaly lose interest. Works every time :bhappy

You know, I just can't quite buy this. I shouldn't have to turn somersaults just to placate these pests. When the Mosquitos start to bite, I don't alter my diet or stop using cologne to "disinterest" them. I get out the deet and kill any I see. I ignore the Indian tailors and react physically to any that touch me.

I visited Hua Hin in early augest, and the tailor sells not really bother you. and then one that did was pleasant and said if i have any time now or on another day would i like to go into his shop. If i had spent longer in Hua Hin i would of bought a suit their, but i got in pattaya. From a shop a friend recommend to me. They done a good job.

Yeah, Hua Hin is very laid back including the touts. Phuket, however, is much worse than Pattaya.

It quite amuses me when I read or hear storiies about the complications people put themseves to when they have a spam phone call. Its as simple as hanging up and saying not one word. 5 seconds and its all done. Same same with the tailors. Start a dialogue and you are showing interest. Snub them and thats that.

Yes, but sometimes they block the path or put their hand on you.

:thumbup

But where I disagree with you is when they glad hand you, block your path or other overtly aggressive moves.

Talk is easy to ignore. Being accosted physically is not.

'Have been glad-handed a few times and either pulled away my hand or pushed away their's, sometimes with a no-no finger wave. Only had one ever step out to block my path, I maintained course & speed, resulting in his being shoved a bit, and just kept going. Also had one reach out and put a hand on my arm once: I abruptly turned to face him full on, he dropped the hand (as well as the grin...), and I continued on my way. 99% of the time all you have to do is just avoid any eye contact and pretend they don't exist.

PS - All that said, if you do a little online research, there ARE a FEW tailors in Bangkok with GOOD reputations, if you really DO want to buy something. I think the Lonely Planet guide lists a few as well.

Maybe its my bigger frame but I have never been glad handed in Thailand by a tailor even in Phuket which I concede is worse than Pattaya.
