Hello to you all. Choices and racism.

Years ago I used to frequent a certain bar. One day I went in and on the other side of the horseshoe bar sat a couple of guys from what appeared to be the Middle East. They would be in the bar nearly every time I went in. Since they always sat in the same place, I had a chance to observe them and how they interacted with the girls. I admit that I first based my opinion on how they treated the girls. They weren't big spenders but they bought at least their share of drinks and eventually we were on speaking terms.

As it turned out they were from Iraq and that was the beginning of Desert Storm. I was a bit surprised that their behavior remained exactly the same and that they enjoyed their beer and the girls the same as I did. If they had smelled bad, the girls would have certainly reacted. Generalizing about anything is never an accurate thing to do.

And it was taken as such, don't worry, just having a laugh.

Then perhaps "Thanks" would have been a more appropriate response?

Same same , observed 2 indians sitting opp us in Submarine. Its a small place so you can see and hear everything! I could hear the accent so no way they were westernised Indians. Anyway , they didnt BF any girls but must have bought 30-40 drinks (and that shooter in a syringe) for the girls and themselves!

There were 4 or 5 "Indians" in Oasis tonight, and were very popular as they were buying a lot of drinks. I got speaking to one of them; it transpired that they were from Singapore and the guy explained that coming to Patts for a couple of days was a lot cheaper, taking all costs into account, than mongering at home.

Cluster, lighten up FFS, I thought you Ozzies had a SOH? You didn't give me any advice I hadn't already received, and you remarked upon the bad behaviour of some Indians. I agreed with you, from my perspective. Sorry if I didn't say thanks :lsmile

Shitty Shetty, no problem, I have a SOH, however, usually when something is funny.... strange thing really!

Sorry if I gave you advice that you already had recieved, thought my perspective of Pattaya Vs Phuket for your holiday would have been useful.

I also provided you with a link to a Phuket forum.... sorry if you already had that!

The only true way to find how you will be treated, is to go. Just take the "right" attitude with you then....As they say - Up to You.

It matters.... unfortunately.

There are a number of top end gogo bars with a very strict no Indian policy. Now.. while I am not racist in any way, I have to admit that here in Pattaya that policy is well deserved by the masses.. It is very common here to see indian guys pushing the limits of what is allowed and whats not... but again, beside the point.

Tho I usually do not suggest carrying your passport in Thailand as pickpockets abound, I would suggest that you do. Tho the door guys at some places won't care, some are smarter than others and flashing your UK passport will get you in.

Then there are quite a number of bars that will let you in assuming you dress ok... but I am guessing thats not an issue :)

All in all you can still have a good time here, but you will get knocked back a couple places.. try to not let that bother you.

Another thing that might work is to meet up with some fellow board members and go out with them... sometimes race is overlooked if your in a mixed company.

Frosty

Above is very good advice Shetty. I do not know

Phuket

, but i know Pattaya reasonably well. I know a few other 'mongering' destinations reasonably well. None come close to Patttaya. I know a few serious 'mongers' who know many more destinations than me. Every single one agrees: Pattaya is best!

Im of Indian appearance too...born and raised in Australia to an Indian mum and ausie dad. I have been to Patts twice in the last 12 months the first trip I had no probs ...with any of the bars. Second trip...I was denied entry to Happy's, I asked why?. I was told this was members only club...I later found out that this was really because of my indian appearance.

I went to another gogo thatnight spent 4000baht on booze, took home a hot as girl....and all was good.

My advice...Is definatly go to pats, Be yourself...If u get denied entry...tell them where your from, and that your here to drink, and throw ping pong balls (haha). If that dosnt work, go to the next one, or a beer bar.

Have a good trip.

No probs, I'll stop it. to be honest though my intent was not racism. my bad for calling a spade a spade.

Hmmm... You truly seem to be a bit of a vile racist, and I begin to see the attraction of Heineken bottles to your blubbery bonce !

Get a photocopy of your passport ID page sealed in plastic to save the risk of losing your passport, most photo shops will supply on for about 50 baht (£1). Then get on some of these bar crawls arranged for newbies by various forums. As previously mentioned there is no such thing as political correctness in the LOS. The Thais base their bar entry policies on their extensive, considerable experience and it's all about how willing the punters are to part with their cash.

Normally gogo bars will not admit Indians at all especially if they are from the sub continent, Arabs do not fare any better. You will have a good chance if you are with a group of white fellows and half a chance if you are on your own and present your copy of your passport. At beer bars anyone can just sit down and order a drink and many punters prefer to patronise beer bars anyway so refused admittance to gogo bars is not the end of the world and should not ruin your trip.

I am planning a trip to Thailand soon, maybe Pattaya, maybe Phuket. I like to do research, I am an educated man, and it seems like Indian people can face discrimination in Pattaya, maybe not so much in Phuket. I am not coming for a cultural visit, I am not coming to get a sun tan (lol), I am coming to scratch an itch. Pattaya sounds like the best of the two but I don't want to be disappointed by being turned away because of my skin colour.

I do take many things I read on the internet with a large pinch of salt and every race has its people who give others bad names. As Phuket is more of a genuine holiday destination I feel that I may get a better welcome there, but my research says Pattaya trumps Phuket, so i ask this question, do any of you have real, actual personal experience of discrimination against Indian people in Pattaya?

Thank you.

S

PS I posted this request on another Pattaya forum and couldn't get a straight answer.

I am multiracial, and while most people in the country of my birth can figure what my origins are, in the U.S. people are confused. Some Hispanics think I am too; some Arabs likewise, and some Indians just look puzzled. In Pattaya, I was referred to as a "Chocolate Man" (not with malice), although some people also greeted me in Arabic! I didn't go to many Gogos, but those I went to didn't have a problem. Just cut your hair really short and say you are "Chocolate Man" :lsmile . Another BM advised making a copy of your passport, enclosing it in plastic (or laminating it) and carry around instead of your actual passport. Sound advice. Also, if you scan your passport and e-mail it to yourself, in the event of losing it, you can produce an actual image to help your Consulate replace it.

Last trip I hung out with a newbie Indian American, and every night was with us on Walking St hitting all the gogos. He never got stopped at the door while with the small group of mixed Asians and whites, American, British, etc. From what I know he didn't have trouble on his own either. He wasn't particularly a big spender but bought his fair share of drinks and lady drinks. You don't have to throw money around to be accepted, just act yourself and enjoy.
