Turning Left at Red Light

Recommended Posts

Whats so crazy about that?

Read the post again, I never mentioned anything about turning left when there is a sign prohibiting it????????????????

read the post again.

Not once did I mention turning left when a sign prohibits it. Ive been going to Thailand for 33 years. If you are so naïve as to think the B.I.B. in Pattaya aren't corrupt?

You must be visiting some other place mate!

A crazy statement. u dont turn left on a red light,if there is a sign telling u not too,its very easy to see,if no sign, turn left with caution, how easy is that to comprehend, its got nowt to do with corrupt police and entrapment.

Left turn on red is allowed by default. It is only not allowed when there is a sign disallowing it.

The signs in Pattaya have a red left arrow and some English writing that is very ambiguous. So, if no sign, proceed with caution. If there is a sign, regardless of what you think it might mean, wait for the green.

Just to muddy the waters somewhat, I saw a couple of signs on Sukhumvit, before and after Theprassit, that read "left turning through" or similar. They are blue signs with white lettering. I tried to snap a picture but could not. Maybe next time. Or maybe someone else can post it here.

Normally a sign like this would imply that left turns on a red are not allowed unless there is a sign permitting it. But given PattayaPete's statement above, I am guessing it is there simply to reinforce that a a left turn is allowed.

The upshot of all this is that I have stopped turning south on 3rd Road when coming from Sukhumvit on Pattaya Tai, which I do quite often. Instead I turn left on Khopai and cut across to 3rd. A better route anyway.

Duly done Khun Bratpack sir.

I still cant see where I wrote. I turn left, when there is a sign prohibiting a left turn whilst waiting at a red ? I did write I turn left when its safe to do so? turning left when there is a sigh prohibiting it, isn't safe to do so, neither is jumping out of an aeroplane, safe to do so (without a parachute). I could go on .and on, and on, but you get my gist? Please tell me how my post is "crazy"? im intrigued?

Please enlighten me with your vast experience and wisdom kind sir?

This is Thailand.

I only turn left on a red..............if I see others doing it, or if no Police box, or evidence of police there.

Ive no idea if it is legal. What seems to be "legal though? is the corrupt Thai police choosing wether or not it is! then wether or not they decide to fine you for it! Obviously, I only turn left if safe to do so!

Ive even waited at a red , until some Thai turns left...then I will follow suit. I never drive a care in Pattaya though, just a scooter...............and that's becoming more and more rare.............nothing to do with the traffic..more to do with the Police , as I really hate being made to pay fines for naff all!

I think you really mean "This is Pattaya" - not everywhere shares the city's problems. I've never really had a problem with the local plod ... and the signing is pretty self-explanatory ... green for go, red for don't go.

You're right Tom, this is very much a Pattaya thing and it's maddening.

Preventing left turns on red is madness anyway, it's a very sensible arrangement - provided that people are not stupid enough to cause hazards, jams or accidents by insisting on them when unsafe or inappropriate - but then I suppose that's where my argument breaks down because TIT.

I ride bikes only in Pattaya. No way would I drive a car.

Other places in Thailand (Chiang Mai is a great example!) are great for driving, the police there also do a decent job, of helping the traffic flow, as opposed to "some" traffic ploice in Pattaya, who are on the lookout for easy money for themselves!

IF EVERY TRAFFIC LIGHT IN PATTAYA HAD A SIGN TELLING YOU WETHER OR NOT YOU CAN TURN LEFT ON A RED, there wouldn't be this thread in the first place!

There aren't signs , at every traffic light, telling you wether or not its permissible to turn left at that particular traffic signal. If only there was.! This I assume is what prompted the O.P. s post in the first instance!

Not sure about that.

In Thailand there is a tendency to turn left without even looking or giving way....:D

People doing so against the red at the Klang junctions often impedes traffic turning right on green off Klang (from the opposite direction), adding to the tailback and general jamming up at junctions.

How about pet hates... for me it is getting stuck behind someone turning right into Foodland off Klang.

PUT YER FUCKIN@ INDICATOR ON BEFORE YOU STOP IN-FRONT OF ME TOSSER!! :D

100% agree Ron,why they have stopped this practice god knows, but they HAVE done it,so we cant moan when we get 400 baht fine. i did it once, thinking no coppers on a left, red turn, they got me.didnt want money in pocket and had to go to soi 9.I deserved it whether i agree or not, i knew what i was doing, and got fined for it,no different to uk except a bigger fine and 3 points.
