How do you get that deal through Chase?

Guess I'm Grandfathered in. Ive been banking with Chase since they were Bank One. Had an account with them for 18 years now. But there are several banks and credit unions that offer no foreign transaction fees, and refund any charges on ATMs, some of them up to 10 times per month.

Depends on whether Visa or Mastercard I believe. The latter being the 180 baht.   Never mind, over 51 baht/£ now for TT.

The last time I went to Thailand I was told in the travel agents that they don't sell travellers cheques any more because they are phasing them out and that there are very few places that will accept them now. I'm not prepared to pay the exorbitant charges that I get charged by my bank for withdrawing money from an ATM so it looks as if cash and a Thai bank account is the only option for me now.

As has been said before, pick the right credit card and pick the right ATM and the only charge you will pay is around 1% per month interest on a cash advance. This stops as soon as the amount is paid off, so use internet banking to pay it off immediately or set timed payments before you leave home.

Another alternative is no fee ATM cards. They have been reported elsewhere on PT. For example, I have a Schwab brokerage account and also a checking account with their bank. I have an ATM card with this checking account which not only charges no fees but reimburses all fees paid to other banks when using the ATM card. I have been using it for several years now with no problems. It usually takes a day or two for the fees paid to other banks to be credited back to my account but it has always worked fine.

The exchange rates are excellent as well. I read the Wall Street Journal regularly and the rates have almost exactly matched the rates quoted in the WSJ for foreign exchange trading in New York.

I have not used TCs for decades, preferring cash advances from bank accounts and credit cards, however, with bank charges now running at rip-off rates I have resumed taking cash and also loading cash in a joint account with the wifey that we have in Thailand.

Many credit unions offer credit cards that charge no ATM fees and take only a 1% international exchange fee. That is the way to go.

It's possible to get a no fee debit card but that'd take the effort of doing a www.google.com search.

Where can you cash American express Travellers cheques in Pattaya :;0

Probably anywhere you can cash TCs......Amex being the most widely accepted.

No personal experience recently but most money changers and all banks.
