Third Annual Iced Tea Competition (2014)

Recommended Posts

Welcome back to the annual Iced Tea Competition. This will be its third year.

The host this year will again be myself (Short). Judges seats are available.

The last two years we saw a small restaurant in Jomtien with their bottomless Iced Tea win the competiton.

Now is the time to submit a place you would like included in the competition.

In the early competition stages this month, a new leader has emerged already. I visited a Resort near Krabi and I was pleasantly surprised. Not only did the hotel restaurant understand and get the order right the first time, too insure nothing was overlooked they also included a separate shot of sugar water for those that don't understand that if you don't burn the tea, sugar is not needed.

What a nice touch and one that will be hard to improve on.

If you are not a member of Pattaya, now is the time to join because later I will be telling members how to stay six nights at a 5 star Krabi resort for free.

The game has begun.

Update:

Discovered by accident that Carls Jr (aka Hardees) uses standard commercial equipment to provide endless tea. They provide dissolved sugar water also. So right now Carl's Jr leads the fast food chain category.

Good question Chang_paarp.

Unlike the other English speaking countries, iced tea is a fundamental element of American meals. In the south, it is heavily sweetened. In the north, no sugar is added, and in the west, it might be mixed evenly with lemon (not lime which Thais call lemon). There is no alcohol in iced tea.

It is served in large quantities in glasses that hold as much as a quart and without all the extra stuff that is in Thai tea. Most houses keep a pitcher of it already made at all times in the fridge. It is very simple to make, but you can also buy it at the grocery store by the gallon jug.

In the UK its almost unheard of. Why would you let tea get cold never mind putting ice in it , its like putting ice in beer, which is already 99.9% water.

PS. what kind of tea is used?, is it dark African full of tannins, Light Indian, aromatic Chinese's, is it a breakfast mix, a fruit blend or even a herbal mix?.

It's rather self evident that it is to have a cold drink on a hot day. Also, the stuff is almost undrinkable unless it is cold. I'll leave your other questions to my learned North American colleague as well as whether refrigeration is an acceptable substitute for ice.

BTW I have drank beer with ice as well when the alternative was drinking 30C old school Singha.

It just goes to show the differences in tastes because I have tasted "Iced Tea" and it was horrible, I like my tea hot strong and with milk as well as a sweetener of some kind. As for drinking it on a hot day, a hot cup of tea will actually cool you down much better than any cold drink, as has been scientifically proven.

Yeah right, that was what my mother said as she couldn't afford Tizer!

At least you didn't cite the laws of physics. :P

Looks like I've fallen down on the job this year and didn't get to enough locations to declare a winner.

Carl's Junior was the best, but its not fair to compete mom and pop restaurants against a chain.

Sizzler in the mall served Iced Tea by the carafe which was nice, but it had that lemon taste as though it had come from a can. Someone needs to ask them for iced tea without sugar or lemon and see what happens.

Longhorn on soi Lengkee didn't serve iced tea because the owners told me that they didn't know that iced tea was fundamental to American dining. The owner's are British and having been to England I can understand the Brits not understanding iced tea. They seemed real excited about the profit that comes from American Iced Tea (just a tea bag, water, and ice) said that its a slam dunk to add to their menu. Who knows, they might take the prize next year.

Martin mentioned that Misty's will make a jug of tea for him that he likes.

I didn't make it to Sam's whom based on previous years would have been most likely the winner.

And I've given up on Tequila Reef.

Feel free to add anyplace that you feel should be declared the winner.

No, I said Mistys does a very good iced tea BY THE GLASS, and they charge accordingly. It's quality, but it's not bottomless.

I stand corrected, too much noise coming from across the street.
