Thai Air discontinues flights to LA and Rome

That happened quicker than I had expected. Not sure why they expected to keep passengers after they added a stop, removed premium economy, and switched from the quiet A340 to the noisy 777.

They lost me when they dropped the nonstop flights.

There were many times when I would take their nonstop at $1500-1600 when some competitors had flights beginning just over $1,000. 3-5 hours difference in travel time.

I used to use the Premium Economy non-stop flights when they were available. I tried both the NYC to Bangkok route and the flight from LA. Nice seats for the price. I also once flew on a Thai Air 747 from LA to Japan and then on to BKK.

According to their website they still fly to LA but not non-stop as Bigus states. The information is dated, though.

Perhaps their website has not been updated.

update: I tried to go through a ticket purchase and got an error message.

update 2: I found this article. Flights to the USA to be suspended and the company will layoff 1,401 people

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/thai-airways-cut-1-401-jobs-suspend-flights-111009109--finance.html

"Thailand's national carrier aims to reduce operating costs and capacity by 20 percent under the two-year plan, which also calls for aircraft sales and a reduction in staffing."

The way that things are going I will not be able to afford to fly Auckland to Bangkok with Thai Air. The prices at the moment have shot up to unacceptable levels. I was able to get a reasonable flight for my next visit but have had to switch for the one following. The last time I flew however the plane was full so perhaps in this case they are cashing in on their success. I can only hope that they stay as they are the only airline that flies direct.

I've flown both NYC And LA routes. Flights were full. Sad to see them go.

Arrivederci Roma
Goodbye, goodbye to Rome

City of a million moonlit places
City of a million warm embraces
Where I found the one of all the faces
Far from home

Arrivederci Roma
It's time for us to part

Save the wedding bells for my returning
Keep my lover's arms outstretched and yearning
Please be sure the flame of love keeps burning in her heart

Far from home

I started looking to book a flight yesterday and I found no airlines from the US west coast that had a BKK landing during daylight hours.

I used to fly EVA because of that. It appears to have changed. Thai Air was the only other I know of that landed in daylight hours from LAX, SFO or Seattle.

I was just searching for flights to the USA (SFO) from BKK and found a nice award flight, short layover, short travel time. Thai Air to Tokyo, UAL to USA.

I clicked on it and got this...
