US to Revoke/Not renew Passports for Tax deliquency

Attached to the Highway Bil (you got a love them) passed this week by Congress. Defined as owing more than $50,000 usd in back taxes .Im posting because i have met a couple fellow Americans who may have problems with this and could make return difficult .

If you set up a payment plan or have "humanitarian" reasons to travel then you may be ok.

For our non American friends, 50k may seem like a lot of money, its not. The IRS levies fines, coumpounds interest and penalties.

For what it's worth, setting up a payment plan is usually pretty easy. I think it's almost automatic if you agree to pay off your delinquency within 48 months. Or, you could try to settle for a lesser amount. Sometimes that works.

The "If we don't like your conservative politics we will audit you and not approve you non profit organization" IRS?

 

What right does the IRS have to tell a US citizen they cannot travel? That is usually done to someone after they are convicted of a crime.

It would seem as though it's congress that's coming up with this strategy.

Not a problem if you file and pay your taxes like the majority of Americans do. While I don't like paying taxes as much as the next guy I do it anyway to avoid issues like the OP posted.

Passports are the legal property of the US government. It was set up that way so they can do whatever they want.
