Views on EVA Air

Hi Guys - First Post and it had to be about airlines - ah well.

 

I am planning my first trip, for april next year 17th April till 1 may, and am looking for a flight.

 

So far the cheeapest I have found is EVA Air departing from London Heathrow - for 466 squid.

 

What I was wondering is has anyone got any views on this airline, as I had never heard of them before.

 

And do they think this is a good price.

Seriously you will find EVA air a great airline to fly. I have flown with them for the past 4 years, ( 8 return trips a year). If you can afford the extra few pounds it is worth going for the Evergreen Class over the Economy as you get a lot more leg room and wider seats.

 

I am fortunate that as my flights are company expenditure I fly business class but I do have friends and family who fly with Eva in other classes and have yet to hear a bad word about them.

 

Also the good thing about the London check in is that it opens 5 hours before the flight so there is never a last minute mad rush at check-in.

I fly out Evergreen Deluxe on 24th Jan, do Eva have a seperate check in at LHR and BKK for Evergreens or do you have to queue with the economy passengers?

Separate, but queues can get longish, almost as long as economy at times. NB it always seems that there are nearly as many Evergreen Deluxe as Economy passengers on a  Combi. Having said that they clear quite quickly.

Transit from other UK airports is a combined check-in, run by Air Canada staff, and is unfortunately right next to the Pakistan IA check-in, complete with hordes of appallingly behaved brats, noisy adults and chickens! [smiley=flames.gif]

FYI - Canadian Airlines went tits up 2 years ago and were absorbed by Air Canada which is now in bankruptcy protection. Canadian was a decent outfit but the bigger and shittier Air Canada ate them leaving Canadians one less choice.

For me going out of Vancouver its only Eva Evergreen Deluxe. 6-7 hours of decent sleep to TPE, the BKK leg is a doddle and you're in BKK in time to open Eden Club at 12:45 and with the energy to make it worth it :-*

Is an Eva Connection possible from Manchester ?

I have checked all the on-line ticket agencies and the best I can find in March/April Manchester > Bkk is about £530 from Air France vis Paris.

Just booked my next trip in Feb on EVA from Manchester.

 

Couple of pointers for you:

 

Do your online search based on London - add on 20 GBP for the Manchester feeder (total price should be 480-490 GBP incl taxes).  Some of the search engines will not pick up availability on the MAN-LON-MAN legs so the flights show as not available - they are, so phone the agent to make the booking.  When searching enter the EVA code (BR) as your preferred airline to pull their flights only.

 

If you use the Airline Network search engine you have the option to show "full farelist and availability".  This will show you all the fares that the airline has released together with the availability on the particular days you want to travel.

 

You can choose to fly either BA or bmi on the MAN-LON-MAN legs up to the end of March.  I prefer bmi as their check-in at MAN seems to be quicker.

 

When BST starts you must use BA due to the return flight timings - EVA gets in too late to connect with the last bmi flight.

 

Make sure you join their Evergreen Club - easy to accumulate miles and, more importantly, easy to redeem them.

 

Wed and Sun flights are on the combi (pax plus freight) 747, Tue, Thu, Sat are on full pax 747.

I have flown 6 different Airlines all in the Cheap seats and I always seem to land at the same time as Business and first class does.

 

In the cheap seats the only airline I would never use again is JAL NEVER again seats are smaller or at least seem that way.

All were the same IMO in comfort and service and I prefer Korean which is one of the cheapest as well. To each his own.

Never been Eva - last three times on Emirates. I was very happy with their service, but for March/April their price seems to have climbed.

One small point on the return leg/connection from London-Manchester (which is a bit tight but not excessively so); is that checked in luggage invariably misses the connecting flight (last of the night). Not really too much of a problem as they deliver your suitcase to your house the next day FOC, but worth bearing in mind for stuff you might need immediately. :-/

Yes I have had experience of the luggage problem at Heathrow, when my case went astray a couple of years ago. Its not so bad when you are inbound but can be a problem when abroad without a change of clothes etc !.

Dont forget Dave, most insurances provide for £50 emergency clothes if suitcases are lost or delayed so long as you have an ailrine or airport loss certificate.

 

£50 buys some good clothes in BKK ;D

Just as a rough guide how is the timekeeping on BR67 BKK-LHR? I believe it's scheduled for 1905 at LHR T3.

GUS- BR067 usually pretty much to sched arrival,I came back 04Dec 35mins early.

Remember they only have 2.1/2hrs to turn around if on sched. Delays cost tons of dough, if you miss your airbourne slot you go to back of queue.

 

I worked for Air Canada and don't remember EVA being regularly late.

I have flown EVA about a dozen times and cannot recall it ever being late.  More often than not, it gets in around 15-30 mins early.  Keep a daily check on teletext flight arrivals for a while to get some idea of the actual times.

I spoke to EVA this morning and the Tue/Thu/Sat flights are all operating in a 368 seat configuration which rules out the good seats in rows 24-27 in Evergreen Deluxe found on the combi.  The actual seat map is below:

3 times i have flown eva, 2 times i have had a 1 hour delay out of bangkok.

 

both times the reason given was a storm in taepei.

 

i guess its same as any airline, delays are possible

Just a word about connecting to flights at LHR.

If you are coming from domestic airports, try to give yourself 2 hours connection time, even if the legal connection is shorter, these times are made up by marketing men who have their heads up their arse.

Also when you arrive, if you have not been allocated a seat, go straight to the airline to check in.  The reason I say this is, your baggage cannot be loaded until you have a seat number in your booking, then you can wander about shopping etc.

 

I know how it feels to have your bag missing at BKK, happened to me last trip, but was just taken to cargo by mistake, even so a pain in the kneck.

I'm thinking of trying EVA for the first time myself, flying from LHR.

 

Anyone know the best place to book through? I've checked out EVA's website and the prices that came up were silly money. Airline Network looks OK though.

 

And if you don't book direct with EVA, do you still get the air miles?

OK to book EVA through any of the main agents.

 

You will accumulate airmiles at 100% in Economy and 125% in Evergreen Deluxe.  Even when using airmiles to upgrade you will still accumulate at the rate of the original booking i.e. if you use airmiles to upgrade from Economy to Evergreen Deluxe you will accumulate miles on that journey at 100% rather than 125%.

 

This does not apply to certain group bookings e.g. booking a package through Kuoni when you are not issued with an individual EVA booking reference at the time of booking.
