Mostly curiosity as I don't anticipate ever flying that route, but is that nonstop? I flew Detroit-Beijing once, 16 hours, and don't want to ever do that again and that was 19 years ago.

Thai Air used to have a nonstop flight from JFK using an Airbus a 340–500, but those fights were discontinued. I took it once and also took a similar flight from LAX, nonstop. They were supposed to be about 17 1/2 hours each way, but sometimes you got lucky and caught a tailwind. On my last trip back to LAX from Bangkok, the flight was only about 13 hours.

As far as I know, there are currently no nonstop flights.

I doubt any major airline flying a trans-Pacific route advertises travel the same time duration in each direction.

Travel east is almost always quicker than west due to the polar jet stream +100 km and greater "tail wind." It can make it 3 - 4 hours longer to fly westward from NA than eastwards from Bkk depending of the route taken and time of the year because the jet stream varies over the year. Going west airlines will try and keep out of the jet stream while heading east try and get in it depending upon the effect of turbulence.

However it happened, I was pleasantly surprised when the flight back to the USA took only about 13 hours, as the schedule was for a 17.5 hour fight. Of course, it did take about that long going from the US to BKK. From LAX, the plane took the typical route to Asia. From JFK, it was up over the North Pole, then down to BKK. It would be nice to see non-stop flights again. The Premium Economy seating was a good deal.

Is it generally cheaper for you to fly East from the States, rather than the quicker (assumed) Trans-Pacific flights?

From Houston it is about the same time of travel and distance but other than the occasional special fares from Emirates and Qatar ... the EVA, Korean Air and Disunited prices going west tend to be cheaper.

The added hassle and cost of getting to JFK negates this for me now. I'm Married to ANA . But I lose status and the business class cabin next year. This under 21 hour, 1 stop flight will be tempting. Have not seen much like this out of the east cost for years.

I use http://www.theflightdeal.com/category/flight-deals/philadelphia/for up to date airfare deals. These tend to be snooze you lose deals.
