PromptPay...what is it, and what can you use it for?

Recommended Posts

I've signed up for PromptPay with Bangkok Bank simply because they kept spamming me at the ATM every time I withdrew cash.

What is it and what can I use it for?

My impression is that it is for government payments/receipts, but I haven't looked further than that.

Can it be used for person to person payments?

They are pushing it so hard, it's either a government mandated program, or they are bound to make big commissions on its use (or both).

A little more information. http://www.bangkokbank.com/BangkokBank/PersonalBanking/SpecialServices/NationalEpayment/Pages/index.aspx# It suggests it will allow use of your phone to pay for purchases. Don't know if it was Prompt Pay or not but saw someone pay for a purchase at the Royal Garden Starbucks with her phone. Unlike in the US, the sales person scanned the phone and it worked first try.

As a tangent,what is BizPay?

I think it's where local businesses trade goods with other businesses without using cash? I saw it advertised on the (very picturesque) front door of Darling Massage.

Is it one of Colovs schemes?

Yes, along with a few of his cronies. You got the idea though..it's B2B only.

How did they scan the phone? Sounds like BitCoin or something scanning a QR code for a SEND transaction.

I read the promptpay description (read it before and still can't see how it makes life more convenient for non-governmental fund transfers). Prior to Promptpay, I could already transfer by phone number within Bangkok Bank accounts. Maybe it allows the same across banks?

I just wish AndroidPay worked here. I used it on my visit to the states, and it was great.

You're exhausting my technical knowledge. I think the transaction I witnessed at Starbucks was similar to Android pay. Perhaps my primary Starbucks in Anchorage had defective gear, but there, when someone hauled out their phone to pay, you could count on several failed scans often followed by an alternative payment method.

It is supposed to be used for paying governmental Bills etc and maybe utilities etc right now. They have promised to allow person to person transfers but it has been delayed for further testing until next year. Big advantage is the cost of person to person transfers as they have promised that it will only cost about 5 baht per transaction. Only need to know a persons phone number to transfer money and not their account numbers so may be safer than giving out your Bank account no and details. Haven't tried it yet so don't know how easy it will be to use.
Good luck with the spamming, I signed up to BKK bank months ago and it still asked me everytime I used an ATM.

I just noticed that they are rolling out Samsung Pay here in Thailand, but it is currently limited to credit card (not debit as I read it) holders from SCB, Citi, and KTC (what's that?).

I have Apple Pay on my iPhone, and that's linked to my debit card. Works at every place that advertises contactless payment methods!!

I would assume so, but who knows!

Thailand isn't that advanced, I fear.

Can you use Android Pay in Ukraine?

Wikipedia claims

As of 2016, it is currently available in the United States, UK, Singapore, Australia and Hong Kong.[6] Upon its UK launch Android Pay supported MasterCard and Visa credit and debit cards from many of the UK’s major financial institutions — including Bank of Scotland, First Direct, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, M&S Bank, MBNA and Nationwide Building Society — "with new banks being added all the time" according to Google. Natwest, RBS and Ulster Bank will launch on September 14th. On September 8, 2016 is was reported that UK banks TSB and Santander will participate "over the coming weeks".[7] Android Pay was launched in Singapore on 28 June 2016,[8] and in Australia on 14 July 2016.[9][10]

I suspect it will be a long time before Thailand is included.

I don't know about Android Pay, as i only have an iPhone, and this may or may not work at all, but the PDQ machine at the Elephant pub at KBP "says" it accepts Apple Pay to pay for services!!

I'm back into the Ukraine in 3 weeks time, i'll double check for the Android version then!

I haven't checked on Apple Pay availability in Thailand.
