Can anyone provide me with contact details for West East travel ?

 

As regards Eva Air . I flew with them recently LHR-BKK return economy class & I would be reluctant to fly with them again . The seats were very cramped & the food was rubbish . I couldn't believe it when they brought around pot noodles as our mid-flight meal . The only good thing was that they showed 4 good movies each way , 3 in english & 1 oriental subtitled one . If you fly evergreen class is will cure the seating problem but you still have the bad food . Also the return leg doesn't get into LHR until 7 pm , meaning for me an overnight stay in London befire catching the 6.50 am flight to Belfast the next morning .

 

I'm currently searching for flights for May & the best I've got so far is Emirates via Manchester & Dubai for £536 . I'm also considering China Air via Amsterdam as it means 1 less stop-over & shorter flight time . Any opinions on which is better ?

Eva are listed as having 34" seat pitch, China as 32" and Emirates as 33". So if you think Eva are cramped you are not going to like the others.....

Baz- Did you do your search from Belfast or LHR ? I've just did the search on Ebookers for your dates from Belfast & still come up with the same price . My dates are 3rd-18th May .

 

Woody - I know on paper Eva seats should be bigger but they felt more cramped , especially in elbow room . Previously I've flown with Finnair ( 33" seat ) & Lufthansa ( 31" seat ) to Bangkok and both seats were far superior with more leg & elbow room . On them you were able to get past the person on the outside seat without them having to move . On the Eva flight the lightly built woman sitting beside me had to get out of her seat to let me get out to go to the loo !

Has anyone ever actually measured the seat pitch on Eva ? I reckon it's not 34" as stated . I had a friend who went to Thailand on his honeymoon . He used Eva on my recommendation as I'd read good reviews on this site . He said it was one of the worst airlines he'd ever flown on for seat comfort , and he has flown quite a bit as he works in Europe but returns to the UK regularly . He usually uses budget airlines ( Easyjet , Ryanair , etc ) , not renowned for their seat comfort so that makes his statement more damning . After having experienced Eva air myself I would tend to agree with him .

Ive just booked with emirates for £482 and its one of the best airlines in the world. A word of warning to anybody who comes across a cheap flight from biman bangladeshi airlines, do not even think about it, we booked late for christmas and all the flights were over a grand, untill we came across one for £500, fuk it i said lets book it. We got a 7 hour delay at heathrow, then the plane was a dc10 (built in the 60s) they play allah akbah for 20 minutes over the speakers before you take off and the food is fukin rank, the best bit is, we took some sleepers and the bastards kept waking us up for the food, no matter how many times we told them. On our return journey we left bangkok on the 15th jan, on our way in to dahka the captain said there is fog  so we would have to land in chittagong in the south, so we had one night in a real shit hole of a hotel and travelled on buses that your local scrap yard wouldnt take, we set off on the 30 minute flight to dahka just after landing the captain came on again "there are no steps to get you off the plane, as soon as a plane leaves and some become available we will let you off" 45 minutes later we get off to find the steps had come from our connection plane and it had fucked off, by this time all the bangladeshis are home leaving about 10 english and about 30 germans, the germans got straight on a flight to dusseldorf (jammy twats) and we were told we wouldnt be leaving till the 18th, so back on the buses to an even worse hotel were they wouldnt even give us drinking water for the rooms, we had no (local) money no luggage (same clothes for 4 days) and the place is one big toilet. When we did eventually leave 2 days later I thought to my self, thank fuck for that im going home at last, that cunt of a pilot had other ideas, I was awoken from my tamazepam induced sleep to be told we were making an unscheduled stop in dubai. I got home a full four days after we set off, with a pissed off boss and my luggage missing. The extra money is worth it!

Pod, I mentioned that back up the thread about 2 weeks ago that Eva return to BKK form LHR was £455 incl taxes through Airline Warehouse.  That is still available too.

 

There is some doubt now that my nephew will be coming with me as he is unlikely to be able to make it at that time  :(  so looks like I will be flying out alone on Eva Evergreen one way ticket  :) :)

I,ve worked for BA in the 70's and the nickname for QUANTAS is QUeers And Nympho's Travel As Stewards

It seems that I'm in the minority here in that I don't mind flying with BA. I like the seat back TV's they have particularly as I'm not that great a sleeper on long haul flights. Plus I get a 10% discount as a shareholder on flights and holidays from their own brochure.

 

Last time I flew cattle class with QANTAS (to Bangkok) they didn't have seat back TV's though they did have them in Business Class in November. Business Class is definitely the way to travel but the only way I can afford to do that is to get a free upgrade  ;D

 

I have yet to experience the delights of EVA Air and it seems unlikely that I will do so in the near future as their flight back to Heathrow from Bangkok doesn't give me enough time to make the last flight to Edinburgh on a Sunday night. So it seems I'm stuck with BA - at least I can pre-book an aisle seat with them well in advance unlike with QANTAS.

 

By the way, anyone care to hazard a guess at what QANTAS really stands for? And no, I don't mean Queensland and Northern Territories Airlines or whatever  ;D ;D ;D

According to my info from a girl whose brother works for BA QANTAS stands for "Queers And Nancies Training As Stewards"   ;D ;D ;D

 

Having said that the last time I flew with QANTAS, I had a very nice Thai stewardess - so perhaps the above only applies to the male stewards?

Search the memory banks and let me know when the last QANTAS aircraft fell out of the sky. Who cares about alleged leanings of cabin crews, the blokes up the front and in the hangars have got me up in the air and down again safely over 200 times.

Hi eneukman thanks for your reply you are right about the T it should be train. but the N was as I said. Don't forget the time was in the 70's, I'm a old bugger, and as you know things change with time. You'll have to excuse any lapses, the last time I was in Pattaya I suffered DVT, got out of hospital 4 weeks ago and with any luck should be out in Pattaya in July this year, and hope to meet up with you all for a drink.

Hi,

Spent the last week searching the internet for fares from U.K. to BKK. nothing else to do as i'm of work, the cheapest fare I could find for July for 7 weeks was with Aeroflot at £440 then Emerates at £480 but with the trouble in the middle east i'm a bit worried about flying down the side of Iraqi. Qantas £650, Eva £630. I eventually got a trip with Austrian air for £501 from Manchester, I thought this was the best as living in the Isle of Man they don't fly to Heathrow any more and this was less hassle. By the way i booked through Thomas Cook.

If anyone has flown with Austrian airline i would like to here their comments.

Never flown with Austrian but if your flight VIE-BKK and return is 4 digits e.g. OS3025/OS3026 then the flight is actually operated by Lauda Air using a 777 with 10 abreast in economy and a 31 inch seat pitch.  Each seat has a seat-back personal entertainment system and the already cramped seating is compounded by the control units located beneath the seats.  I'm not sure whether this route is sold as a charter by Lauda Air in Austria (much like Airtours flights to Phuket/Bangkok) but it does appear to be incredibly cramped for a scheduled flight.

It is Lauda Air via Venna, never used them before, I'm not to worried about food as long as entertainment is alright. And at 5ft 6 not to worried about space. I've always used Thai Airlines up to 2001, then it cost £405 from Heathrow but now increased by £300. Let you know about the trip when i arrive. The only thing i don't like about the flight is that it arrives in BKK at 0600Hrs. I hope to be staying at the RG when I arrive I wonder is it possable to leave luggage there until you can check in, Usually 1400Hrs is check in.

Qantas or Eva? ...... If your flying 3 or 4 time each year .... London to Bangkok (non-stop). Who would have the best frequent fly membership ??? Again on non-stop London to Bangkok ;D

QANTAS obviously has more opportunities for earning miles through the OneWorld partnership, although EVA has more opportunities for upgrades because of the fourth class (Evergreen Deluxe).

 

The basic upgrade requirements are (one-way LHR-BKK or v.v.):

 

EVA - Economy to Evergreen - 15,000 miles

        Evergreen to Super Business - 30,000 miles

 

QANTAS - Discount Economy to Business - 40,000 miles

 

In both EVA and QANTAS travel in economy earns 100% of actual mileage (approx 5,900 LHR-BKK).  In Evergreen Deluxe you earn 125% of actual mileage.

 

Three return trips within one year with EVA will earn you silver status which gives you additional 10 kg baggage, check-in at the business class desk and access to lounges at both LHR and BKK.

 

I think that different people will put different values on the respective benefits depending on their own preferences and circumstances so it is very difficult to compare any two schemes.  I would say that if you choose one try and stick with it - at least until you have used up your accumulated mileage.

I'm just curious, but do you UK folks have the opportunity to earn miles besides flying with the airline.  In the US flying is becoming almost a 2nd means to earn miles.  Examples:  sign up with a specific credit card company get 15-20K miles plus 1 mile for every $1 spent, sign up with a specific long distance carrier get 6K miles plus 5 miles for every $1,  sign up for a specific ISP get 10K,  list your house with specific real estate company get 1000 miles for every $3000 in selling price, and the list goes on and on.

I think I posted on this subject previously.  You may have noticed that, on the whole, we can be a pretty cynical lot in the UK, no more so than when it comes to customer loyalty programmes - I think it is a US marketing phenomenon that never quite took off to the same degree in UK.  I remember reading that airmiles was the second largest currency in the world after the US dollar and if they were all redeemed concurrently it would put a lot of major players out of the game.  It's actually quite scary that a few airline companies effectively have an "off-balance sheet" debt of this magnitude especiially considering that most of them have negligible assets in the first place although I'm sure the companies administering the scheme are kept at arm's length from their "parent" companies.  I think that you can collect Airmiles (a British Airways subsidiary, I believe) in UK by shopping with certain stores, petrol companies, credit cards etc.  However, I do think that airmiles comes pretty far down the list of reasons to fly with a particular airline - more a bonus at some later date.  That said I belong to three FF schemes (Thai Star Alliance, EVA and China Airlines)  I use Thai for hotel certificates to use in BKK and EVA for upgrades to Evergreen deluxe and China Airlines for upgrades (if I manage to fly with them often enough).  I do wonder what will happen to the Americans perception of mileage programmes if one of the major airlines (United or AA) goes to the wall - are their miles redeemable in your local Wal-Mart or what?  

 

I will probably find out now that everyone else in UK is shoppiing at Tesco's, buying fuel at BP and using a HSBC credit card to fund their trips to LOS. :-/
