Hi

Got an email that EVA are having a bit of a sale, if you can call it that.

LHR-BKK Econ for May / June (random dates) - £529

LHR-BKK Econ Premium Econ April / May / June (Random Dates) - £830

LHR-BKK Premium Laurel April / May (Random dates) - £1800

Not bad for a direct econ fare, when Thai is a bit more (£620 - depending upon the service you book). There should be some more deals coming up over the next few months as Thai and EVA start their usual seasonal price battles.

Not sure how the 1 stop ME carriers compare.

Also, it appears that all EVA Econ flights out of LHR are now 3-4-3 in Econ.

Edit in:

A friend at work recently used EVA with the new configuration, he said it wasn't too bad but the queue for the toilets 2 hours before landing was 7 people deep!. He definitely noticed a change in service levels and comfort, and not for the better!.

EVA seem to be using a mix of the old 3-3-3 and the new 3-4-3 configuration. (Anyone know how to see which is going to be used on flights I might consider booking?)

I've now experienced 3-4-3 twice. The first time wasn't too bad as I had an aisle seat and no-one in the adjacent seat. The second time was horrific. I had a large-ish Chinese guy sat beside me, and his right shoulder overlapped my seat space. I don't think it would have been much different with an average-sized Westerner.

Your friend's comment about the toilets is correct.

To be honest it doesnt seem much of a bargain for May June. I booked direct with EVA for £380 ish last February for a May flight. It was available for £367 from some on-line bucket shops.

I admit I thought the same. I know that EVA's high season runs from Late June through to Late August where the flights are more expensive. I paid about £580 for July which was sadly in the middle of their high season prices, yet the year previous October was £425.

The Elite (premium) seats tend to remain static due to the small area of the cabin. I'm half tempted to opt in for one of those seats given their changes in Economy, but I'm going to wait for Thai just after Xmas to see what they have to offer. For some reason I'm really being put off EVA with their reconfiguration in economy, I've heard nothing but bad reports about it, so much so that paying an extra few ££ for Thai is a pill I'll happily swallow.

I have a few more flights already booked on EVA, and they are a mixture of the old and the new configuration.

I would book more journeys if I could be certain of getting the old configuration. I'm hoping there's some way of finding out what the configuration is before making the booking.

How can you tell Baz?

I clicked on the ticket itinerary, and it gives me two versions of the 300ER, (77N, 77A), both only 9 across, but not sure if that's definite.

On the EVA site, go to

"Managing your trip" >

"Print boarding pass / Check-in confirmation" >

Yea, thought that's what you were gonna say.

Because we're flying with an infant, it won't let us check in online, have to do it at the counter, or look at the seats online. I already booked the seats when i booked, tried to get the bassinet but she's too old. Have to ring the London office to change, which i'll probably do tomorrow or Friday to find out.

That's not something I have any knowledge of but it is not logical to me.

You are not checking-in, and the site is there to do things other than that - choosing seats being one of them. Unfortunately, the website seems to be structured in a way that, to get to do those things, you have to go down the path that is for doing on-line check-in.

Maybe you could provide EVA with some feedback on that.

I'm kinda hoping you have to go through the Office to book or change seats when with an infant, due to them keeping any 'spare' seats for beside those people. I've noticed that on EVA, empty seats beside a parent or parents with an infant. Or anyone who had been sitting there had moved, either would suit me :D

It seems that both N and A class 777's are both 9 across, as is the M class 777 as well.

If your ticket shows a B class 777, then start to worry, as that seems to be a 10 seat row flight.

Ive booked and paid £800 with EVA for March in Premium Economy which I thought was a good price.

£1800 for business isn't too bad either as EVA offer a very good product. In my opinion EVA business seats are as good as first on BA ( not that there is a first class on the BKK route ). I have an acquaintance who works for BA and has a Thai wife. They pay staff rates and almost always get upgraded to at least business and they still prefer to go via Hong Kong rather than take the clapped out 777 that BA use on the Bangkok route. Mind you as long as they can fill business class with eight across at a higher price than the middle Eastern carriers charge for a superior hard product then they really do have no incentive to change

I'm still mulling it over. I've shopped around today and also managed around the £800 mark, give or take a tenner or so, Econ is £540 upwards to £610!!. For an extra £250 (ish) I'm getting tempted, but it's a big wedge to hand over at once lol, especially with my CC taking a beating this month with 3 Premium Econ LHR-MNL Cathay tickets to pay.

Ages since I went Premium on EVA, is it really much better than the Econ service?.

I firmly believe that it is, just for the better seating size and arrangement. As you say, for an additional £250 for 2 x 11 hour flights in mid range comfort it more than justifies the cost. Perhaps a non direct airline would give a better price but for me, I like direct so happy to pay that.

As the hours pass by and looking at the website I'm agreeing with you more and more!.

Actually I've been looking, the smallest disparity in cost although on slightly different dates (weekend as opposed to weekday for some reason) is £610 Econ versus £810 PE which seems even better value. Any particular seats to avoid in that part of the cabin?.

When I walk through Prem to get to cattle class, I'm often aware of a lot of young children.

Do others notice this?

I sent an email to EVA asking how I could find out about the configuration ahead of booking. They replied by telephoning me a short while ago.

In short, there isn't, unless I telephone and ask them. They (the London office) have the information but it is not put into the public domain. They suggested I give them a call once I had flights in mind.

From my conversation, I got the impression that the usual configuration is 3-3-3 and that 3-4-3 is just experimentation at this stage. I told them I found the 3-4-3 configuration horrific and wouldn't fly with them if I knew that I was going to have to endure that. I hope she feeds the comment back to whoever is in charge of the experiment!

Your friend's comment about the toilets is correctI have noticed that EVA seems to be using the 3-4-3 seating on the short leg flights and the 3=3=3

I have noticed that EVA is using the 3-4-3 on their short leg flights and the 3-3-3 on their long hauls. On their 3-4-3 set ups in the back it narrows down to a 2-3-2. Do not book these unless you are very short and thin, the seats are even smaller than regular economy

Just rang them up, ours is 333.

They said it's mostly 333, just a trial as said above.

Good bit of sleuthing there Bazle!, nicely done mate.

With any luck they'll keep the 3-4-3 on the US Routes and leave the LHR one well alone. I still haven't purchased my flight as I'm in the process of arranging leave. Sadly on this occasion I might have to leave Mrs Butch at home to run the business :allright while I jet off and grab myself some relaxation time in funtown :D :D  .

IMO nothing about EVA is as good as it used to be. They are still ok and probably the best value for the money though

Good question GP and I'll do my best to give my opinion but not necessarily a correct answer. I agree with Cbrib, he hit the nail square on. I've been flying with EVA since 1997 back then on their modern 747-400 Combi's (the CC got an applause when we landed in BKK).

Years ago EVA offered LHR-BKK Econ for £300 I have a receipt from 1999 which was for £303 all inc for April. iirc Eva Deluxe class was £150 more. EVA always offered a price point and service which was very competitive with Thai and BA but the "clincher" was that EVA had better tackle. Their 747's all had seatback IFE, good, decent recline (1 inch or more than everyone else) plenty of drinks and good CC plus the option of an easy upgrade to Elite at the desk (me and a friend once upgraded from Econ to Biz at the check in desk - upstairs on a 747. Awesome) , whereas Thai were running stuff like "Phimara", an old 747 with a CRT TV at the front of the cabin, old and tired seats but really good food. The check in at LHR was done by Air Canada staff who were pretty damn good, I even took one of the girls out one evening.

Move on a few years and EVA are running 777's with the most powerful GE90 in the business, 115,000lb's of thrust which, at the time, was incredible. Added to that, EVA updated their livery and IFE regularly yet still managing to keep a competitive price point, but as you well know, the airline industry changed exponentially and EVA changed its game accordingly. The CC service declined, the meals got smaller and the allowance remained the same at 20kg for LH. Less food and drinks were offered and EVA introduced a "high season" running from June thru to late Aug when prices effectively doubled.

Fast forward today and the price point still remains in line with Thai for a comparible on board service. Timings are not as great as Thai seem to get priority at SVB, but the IFE, Seat comfort, pitch and recline (pre 3-4-3) are still very generous. Food is actually very good. My last 3 meals on EVA have been arguably the best I've ever had on a plane in recent times. 30 kg allow in Econ is more than fair. CC are helpful, food available at all times via the rear of the cabin and overall, for an economy direct service it's not too shabby.
