Andy:

I would hang tight and keep checking prices. As stated, fares are normally lower in Sept. as "normal vacation time" is over. BA fare is way too high! I think you could safely wait until late June, early July to get the best fare. But, with the increase in oil prices a lot of airlines are already increasing their fares. Best keep this in mind, but keep checking.

I have a buddy that wants to go to LOS with me in mid-August and he can't seem to understand that while it is low season there, that the airlines charge more money? Refer to above; still normal vacation time for a lot of the world.

I think I would avoid Priceline for flights. You could be routed all over the place and end up with a very long flight. Priceline is good for hotels though in Bangkok.

I recently found out that Priceline.com now has listed fares and flight information that is in addition to you bidding; if you prefer. You now can book a listed fare if you want.

Ya, fares about $100 more than usual. I'm travelling Sep 2nd to Sept 30th from San Diego. Can't wait :D I'll be getting my ticket very soon.

You can wait for a dip in prices, and there likely will be one, but $700's from Boston isn't too bad...considering the gas situation.

I recommend booking little ahead (however you do it) as you will have the opportunity to score a "good assigned seat" both ways (review seating plan for plane/where TV sets are located/get seat on window side on isle, 3 rows back from tv, ect...you know.... Makes a 24 hr. flight much more bearable, and beats being crammed in the middle of an 8 seat row because those were the only seats left.

Anyway, something to consider.

Goodluck.

With the cost of gas at all time highs, I would book right now. I fly Philly to BKK and $700.USD is a good price. I usually fly United.

I would book it now, with oil prices going up could get a lot higher. $777 is not a great price but not bad from Boston. I flew over in Jan for $640 on NWA but was a sale price and gas was much lower then. For discount hotels try www.Asiatravel.com

I just saw a huge jump in prices from the US. Last week it was approx $1000 from Minneapolis to BKK. I thought that was expensive. This week the prices have jumped up to $1500. This is at the end of June first part of July. I hope this jump is temorary. I do not plan on paying that much. :banghead

$777 is a good price. I'm planning to return in October and the cheapest listed on Travelocity from Fort Myers to Bangkok right now is $774 for my time frame. Of course those fares are mostly only good if you can depart and return on a weekday although some airlines include weekends as well. I will probably wait until early June to book it though..........or maybe not.

I used the cash and miles with Northwest last year the end of November first of December. Cannot remember exactly when it started or how long it lasted but it was a nice deal.

Andy,

I know that I was of the opinion to purchase a ticket at $777, but got this in my e-mail today from Travelocity...appears they have all weekday dates for September...not a huge price difference, but thought you'd like to know:

Boston To Bangkok $715.0+

  • 3 weeks later...

Last time I flew to BKK in sept (last year to be precise) I paid $525 on United. After august the price drop substantially. If you are flexible on what days you can leave then you should be able to get a fare between 600- 700 on United. It is the June -Aug season where United charges a fortune. Price might drop a bot if they add a second flight from Tokyo to bangkok. Until then oh well. If you are flying from boston they will probably route you through germany connecting to a Luthansa flight. 2guns 2guns

cowboy,

Where are you flying from for the $525. UA flight.

Do not route thru Europe as the price goes up like a rocket. When I use UA website to book, I use the multi city option and route myself, PHL-ORD-NRT-BKK and the price I get is around $715USD this price is available September thru early December.

With the price of gas at a all time high, I don't expect any heavy discounts this fall. I would book now.

Just FYI guys, a LOT of the UA flights to BKK that are showing for Sept-Nov are utilizing the new ORD-KIX (Osaka) transpacific route; the price is basically the same if not a bit cheaper than the NRT connection ($750-$850 for me from ORD depending on dates) but the KIX flight is always on a 777, which in my book is a bit more comfortable than the 747 to Narita. Be careful in booking though... the KIX connections are lumped together with either JAL or Thai flights into BKK... with some of the Thai flights, I have seen an 11 hour layover in KIX, which I would have to imagine would suck in the middle of an already 24 hour long trip  . Be wise when booking, and keep an eye on those times!

I leave Friday September 17th (afternoon flight) and I am paying $850 plus tax on Eva in Evergreen Deluxe, not a bad deal. Economy is usually $200 cheaper. I was originally paying $1200 in August for Economy on Eva but I had to change my trip recently and even saved some money.

cheers

kj,

Do you just fly Southwest to LAX and hop on EVA there? Just curious, as it might be cheaper (and better) on EVA vs. United, even though I have to go to the west coast to grab the flight. Do you book through EVA directly?

I usually call Eva at 1-800-695-1188 and book thru them. I have to mail a moneyorder to LA and they mail me my tickets.

The prices are very close if Eva includes the Vegas to LAX connection. On my upcoming September trip I am paying $850 out of LAX, if Eva included the Vegas to LAX connection the ticket was close to $900. But I've had flights on Eva where the prices were the same with or without the Vegas connection.

I am paying $70 on Southwest so it was about the same price, I did it that way because some of the flights to LAX were either sold out or inconvenient times for me, I have to work until 11:00am. I'd prefer to book Southwest, I am a Rapid Rewards member and they have flights to LAX almost every hour, I think Southwest is the most dependable airline.

In the future I'll also try Eva.com, sometimes the prices are cheaper and recently they upgraded their website so I can include the Vegas connection on Eva.com.

I look at every option before booking, I like to fly Evergreen Deluxe because I am a fat ass :beer and I have a bad left knee. Also everytime I am flying to LAX on an airline that isn't Southwest, I book a Southwest flight anyway, I had a scare once where a flight here was 2 hours late. Even if I don't use the Southwest ticket, i can use the credit towards a future flight, like when I go to San Diego and Tijuana.

Southwest doesn't give us an anal fisting like most airlines, they have great prices and wont charge $100 if you miss the flight.

Hope i answered your question

cheers

I fly out of SFO. To find UA best price I log onto travelocity and choose the option of flexible trip departure but display only UA. Then I choose lowest fare and work the dates to find out when it is availble that fits my schedule. I then take those dates go back to the ula website and book the ticket. Several times the ua website then gave me a fare that was even lower than the travelcity fare.

Right now the lowest fare on ua is 690 but they will probably drop lower after July 1. They tend to leave the fares up when it is more than 90 days out.

But given fuel cost i doubt UA will get under 625 this year. :D EVA is still flying for $572

KJ you prick you got me looking at 9/17 and now I am tempted to book just to hear you do a live stand up at an FLB party!! :devil B)

Cowboy,

I've never flown United. I'm in New York now, i flew Northwest. I think Evergreen Deluxe is better than 1st class on most flights here in the states. I flew in cattle class from Vegas to New York and sat in the first row of cattle class and was looking in 1st class, I could see they are wasting their money, no legroom and no footrest like Evergreen deluxe. 1st class It didn't look too spacious but that could of been the large flight attendant taking up all the room.

cheers
