Yes, an old recommendation that perhaps was SOP in the Philippines...... I gave it a go once, but after several beers I started to forget to do it which somewhat defeated the object. It may make them move on to...adding up the total wrong or just returning insufficient change. It really isn't that bad these days, it is just so much easier to hit the bin of the guy buying for everyone........ and many places have the itemised computer billing.

Quite possibly..... I can only comment on a particular train I took from HuaHin which did indeed seem to stop at a lot of places and was a method for the locals to transport their farm produce by the look of it.

Agreed, did a few train trips years ago, the one back from Hua Hin was probably the worst.A slow and uncomfortable way to travel mostly......

I saw a news report that claimed 10 bike riders and the car driver may have taken offence at the way the bikes were driving.Have to wonder if it is safe being out and about late at weekends......... The checks on motorcycles I frequently see at 11am or so may be more fruitful at 3am.

I know Thais can get across for a day at Mae Sot, but I see you plan on arriving via Air Asia. Yes Thais need a visa, can be issued on arrival 28 days/$40.

If you have no problem covering all potential expenses this sounds like the best option.Keep doing the internet research too as there is not only the sick buffalo to be suspicious of, the hankering for the latest BMW may come into play.

I did it myself, well went with the TGF. Armed with one of those books from TAT that lists all the hotels and guest houses. Stayed in a reasonable hotel in the City. Took the regular bus from Pattaya to the Southern Bangkok Station, but coming back we took a longer journey looping round to Moechit. These organised minibus trips are rarely very good. They like to pack them full, and of course they are done on the cheap. My natural aversion to paying up-front in Thailand made me go myself, but of course the TGF's language abilities were a necessity. It is a good interesting trip though.
