  1. It looks like one bad flood and it's gone anyway. The soil that is showing in the photo looks like sediment buildup over time. The foundation needs to be very deep. It reminds me of a line in the movie "The Bridge on the River Kwai" when the British officer tells the Japanese Colonel Saito that the initial position is wrong. Too soft. Major Reeves: As I was trying to tell you a while ago, sir, the Japanese couldn't have picked a worse location. There's no bottom. You see those piles? They're sinking. Our chaps could drive those piles 'til doomsday and they wouldn't hold.
  2. on the right of the graph is 12H 1D...10Y so that changes the graph for a period of time from 12 hours to ten years. If you look up stocks online they have a similar system on different sites. Below the graph is the currency you want to exchange. To the right of that is the currency to change to. To the right of that is a blue arrow to update the currencies to get a new graph.
  3. Still that is almost 25%. For the USD it has lost about 1/6th in just four years. Here's your graph for the last ten years. Anyone can see theirs by switching currencies below the graph and hitting the arrow to the right to update. https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=NZD&to=THB&view=10Y
  4. she has a nice voice. Reminds me of Suzanne Vega.
  5. I think America was getting even with you for the experience my ex and I had at Heathrow. Deplane, get bags, clear customs, take bags to a shuttle to take us to another terminal so we could check in bags again for a flight to Amsterdam. hehe You got off easy! Damn but you guys have one huge airport. That was 1984. So maybe Heathrow was getting even with us???
  6. How does Boeing profit besides slightly more material and installation time?
  7. I remember one trip years ago all the British guys were bemoaning the pound sterling being low. I mean I felt for them but was glad it wasn't the USD. Now it is and I only care about my currency and my trip or no trip, if it goes too low. Hell, I need new furniture. When the USD was way up, I could afford both a trip and other things. Now it is bad enough that I have to take out all my fingers and toes and do some figuring.
  8. They just want to think they are doing something about money laundering and drug smuggling but $10K on an airplane won't go very far in the underworld these days. And after all of these years you would think they would increase the amount. It's been $10k for as long as I can remember.
  9. That is true. You can't get off an airplane overseas before declaring you aren't carrying more than 10K usd. Foreign bank accounts must be declared on our tax returns. I am rethinking my previous lack of enthusiasm for Bitcoin. Not that I will for one last trip but a digital wallet might be a good way to go. Just musing. I am no expert regarding it.
  10. no I only mentioned it as another thing to discuss with the bank official. My main point was to trust in your experience.
  11. Does Boeing push or just offer it for airlines that want to jam the most people they can onto their flights? So that they appeal to a different clientel as it were.
  12. I would go with an expat like jacko over me. I have only transfered money once. Expats have the knowledge regarding the real world. Mine is more academic. That said, please let us know what you discover.
  13. yes that is prudent. There was a mention of Thai banks closing accounts under a certain amount. Make sure you understand how much money is needed in the account and over what period of time to prevent that.
  14. They flew those 747's for every penny they could extract from us. One of their last years flying to SFO using them, we took off from Taipei and I have never been in such a rattle trap, even old jalopies. We still had a few of those in my youth. Cars were strictly mechanical things still back then. Not computers with powertrains. But that plane shook and moaned and shuddered. I was very happy for the switch to the 777 because after Thai stopped flying to the Pacific coast years ago, EVA was the only airline that would get me to BKK midday. I hated middle of the night arrivals.
  15. Which is fine if a toaster stops working. Not fine if it catches on fire. Not fine when airplanes are falling out of the sky. Boeing has a responsibility most companies do not have. Would you rather fly on a Boeing or Airbus jet or an Aeroflot jet? We trust certain companies because they are more reliable than others and with a better safety record. How many people look to see what type of aircraft they will be flying on? I do. If I saw a 737 Max, I would look for another carrier. I think many savy travelers wouuld as well. So, Boeing cut corners and it is likely to cost them bi
  16. It is subject to an exchange rate. https://www.expatica.com/finance/money-management/best-ways-money-transfers-international-108328/ I googled the following, that was the first hit: is transfering money to a foreign account subject to exchange rates
  17. I played golf on the Kona coast once. Rocks instead of sand in the traps. We went to Volcanoes National Park and I remember mile after mile of macadamia trees along the way.
  18. It used to be a company that didn't cut corners. At first I didn't think it would affect their business too badly with the long lead time for new aircraft and only one main competetor but then I read that one of the biggest Boeing customers in America, Southwest, with I believe has the most 737 Max planes in their livery, is considering Airbus. A major blow if it works out that way. https://simpleflying.com/southwest-a220-order/
  19. The Federal Reserve policies regarding interest rates, although Chairman Powell in his last press conference claimed that the Treasury Department is responsible for the strength or weakness of the dollar, as if interest rates don't affect it. Lower interest rates make money cheaper to get. It also means investments that depend on interest rates for returns are not worth putting money into except I suppose as a hedge. That is why we have had a decade or so in our stock markets. No place else to go to get good returns on investments. There is a debate raging frequently from Trump to pundits
