  1. I'm staying at the Sabai Inn now and am very happy with the choice. The room is good having been recently redecorated. On the Beach side the rooms are quiet. Everything works - Air-con, TV, toilet. Yes the interior rooms dont have a window to the outside, but I stayed in one of these once and it did not bother me at all. I trust the staff - once I left my in-room safe door open - when I returned nothing had been touched. You can use the pools at the Sabai Lodge just across the Soi so lack of a pool is no problem. If you play snooker this is the place to stay - a full size table in good condit
  2. Having taken the bus airport > Pattaya in June I can confirm that Bluntman's advice is accurate. But I have no idea about the timetable. My flight landed at 7.20 am and I was at the bus station at about 8.30. My bus left at just after 9.00 am and took about 2 hours to Pty. One not so good feature was that the bus did not use the Pattaya Bus Station, but just drew up on Sukumvit Road. This left me with a dangerous crossing of this fast 6 lane highway towing my bag behind me to get a baht bus on Central Road to Soi 2. However airport > hotel Soi 2 - about 2.25 hours, total cost 130 bah
  3. I travelled to Hua Hin (20 km further than Cha Am) from Pattaya last week. The route was:- Pattaya to Victory Monument (Bangkok) Taxi 2.5 hours 1100 baht Victory Monument to Hua Hin Mini Bus 3.2 Hours 160 baht The Mini Bus is a lot faster than the big bus from the Southern Bus Station and the Victory Monument is much easier to get to from Pattaya. It does the trip non-stop but does stop in Cha Am if required.. The Mini Bus left shortly after my arrival in the taxi so the transit time was just under
  4. 12 days - I arrive 14 June - Qatar airways - land 7.35 am. Cant wait !.
  5. I'm flying to LOS 15 February on Etihad. I've had an e-mail stating that I will not be required to pay the extra £20, which means that they, like BA, are absorbing the increase. That robber Brown is at it again !. Its yet another stealth tax from the master, fresh from helping to destroy the UK pension system. No worries for the MP's though - they voted themselves a huge increase in their pensions not so long ago.
  6. I'm arriving on Etihad EY 403 Scheduled arrival 6.30 am. Want to go direct to Pattaya. Anyone Like to share a taxi ?. Dave
  7. Paul - Is the Duathlon 5k run and 40k bike ?. If thats so, the run is a bit short and I wonder where the bike ride would go. I've done a few triathlons and duathlons in the UK. Unfortunately I will be sans bike when I'm in PTY in February. I run around Buddha Hill quite a bit in the evening for an hour or so. I did the Pattaya half marathon in 2005. Regards dave
  8. My favorites are :- Greggs Kitchen - Top Class English food in a calm atmosphere. A little expensive but you can read the latest newspapers from England. Their roast beef is excellent Pig and Whistle - You can't go far wrong Apex Buffet - Value for money but average quality, however I always find something worth eating. Rosie O'Gradys - Superb Breakfast I.M.O. Food Cart outside Classroom 2 , Soi 2 - Really nice kebabs and sticky rice. Cheap late night snack.
  9. I'm spending a few days with a pal on the small island of Koh Tao, prior to heading for Pattaya (Koh Tao is in the Koh Samui group of islands). I want to go there as soon as possible after arriving from the UK at the new Bangkok Airport. The best way appears to be to fly to Samui with BangkokAir and then take the catamaran ferry to Tao. I dont want to purchase a ticket online as I'm not convinced I want to make the journey the day I arrive, due to tiredness. My question "Is it possible to buy a ticket at the airport on the day of the flight" ? The website does not give me the answer - anyo
  10. I do a fair amount of cycling at home in England. I have always thought that Pattaya would be very cycling unfriendly and have never done it there, but during the last trip I saw several farangs on bikes. So when I arrive in November I will see if I can find the place mentioned above. I have looked at the bikes on sale in Tops for about 1000 baht - they were very basic, but on your return you could just give them away. Thanks
  11. I went to the Universe Gym. Its on Sukumvit Road about 200 yards in the Bangkok direction from the juction with Central Pattaya Road. You can get there easily by taking a baht bus on central road near to Tops or of course by motor-bike. Its air-conditioned with a good selection of equipment.
  12. Good selection in Jeremy's books situated in Soi Chiyapoon (Next to Crazy Dave's). Soi Chiyapoon is off Soi Buakow. He will allow you 50% back on the book when returned against another book. Inside everything is organised by author and there is a selection of non-fiction. Another bookshop is in the shopping arcade near the Dolphin Roundabout on second road. They sell both new and second hand paperbacks. Quite a few hotels have a selection of books left by previous guests. Nothing like reading a good book during the day anticipating the nights activities !.
  13. In Pattaya I have seen a few Honda "Trans-Alp" bikes for hire. I had one about 6 years ago - it was one of the best I have owned. Good for touring and with an off the road capability. You dont see many in the U.K. but in Thailand they seem to be the most popular in the 500-600 cc range. Think they were about 500 baht per day. A very practical bike if you want to do a few miles away from the resort.
  14. Jo - I've been to Ko Samet, but not on a motor bike. Sounds like you can hire them on the island - what you would need would be a dirt bike of some sort.
  15. Jack - thanks for your interesting post on motorcycling in Pattaya. I used to be a biker and have owned BMW RT's and RS's, although my last bike was a Triumph Trophy 1200 cc. That I rode throughout the U.K. and to France, Begium and Switzerland. In Pattaya I usually get an automatic small scooter from "Twist and Go" on Soi Buakow. Normally I just tour round Pattaya and Jontien, but I have made longer trips to Sattahip (25 miles) and Non Nooch Gardens (15 Miles) and did have thoughts about riding along the coast to Ban Phrae, from where the boats leave for Ko Samet, but that looks like about 50
  16. Got a cheap taxi ride last time. We had decided to take the bus from Morchit > Pattaya (fare about 100 baht) but to get to Morchit you need to take a taxi (200 baht - its not far). During jouney driver said "where you go from Morchit ?". I said "Pattaya" he said "I take you - 1000 plus tolls". We said "Your on". Price quoted at the airport booth was 1500 + tolls.
  17. Yes I bought the Express 14/11/05 specially as I dont normally read it. I think the point about the index increases to the basic state pension is a very minor one. The pension will increase by less than £2 per week, so keeping quiet about living in Thailand seems to me to be a very minor crime. I'm 62 and am getting the winter fuel allowance of £200, and am amused to reflect that this will buy me about 12 nights with LBFM's - talk about winter warm-ups !. I've paid my taxes for well over 40 years and am drawing an occupational pension which I worked long and hard for. The people who do
  18. I would like to find a bike hire shop also. Here at home in England I often go out on my bike for a few hours, as I find it excellent excercise and you see so much more of the country. The bikes for sale in Big C or Tops looked to be very basic without gears and not capable of any sort of speed. OK for a couple of miles in Pattaya but not really up to say a half day trip into the countryside. Maybe there is a business opportunity here !.
  19. PICTURE OF SABAI INN BED - IT LOOKS VERY INVITING TO ME ! I have stayed there several times - never had a problem with the beds !
  20. members based in the U.K. can save money by using a Nationwide Card at the ATM's, because this building society makes no charge for withdrawals abroad, unlike most banks. If you travel abroad a lot you can save by opening an account.
  21. My experience is that Pattaya only gets realy busy over Christmas/New Year. There is usually plenty of accomodation up to 15 December and from 15 January.
  22. David :- George McCoy of Pattaya ? Yes I've seen his guide to massage parlours - but dont think this would be a proposition in Pattaya. I'm also an accountant but have not worked in that capacity for a while. I have noticed many jobs advertised for accountants in the Bangkok Post (Daily English Language newspaper), but they nearly always specify Thai Nationals with good command of English. I suppose if you worked for a large multi national company with an operation in Thailand a job there might be a possibility - thats probably the only way you could get a work-permit. There are a few web-s
  23. Baxer - Yes you are right - it would be more like 7 mins not 15. At 15 it would be about 1 Km for the average person and it is not that far. I was thinking more of from The Bakery (Soi Chiyapoon) where I often had breakfast , but the Areca is much closer.
  24. The water quality at Pattaya beach has a very poor reputation, but during my recent trip I went for a swim, in common with a few others, and saw no undesirable objects and have suffered no after effects - but maybe I am lucky. I find the beach quite pleasant - you can sit down, read and chat to friends and your girl. A selection of drinks and food is always available from both the proprietor of your beach section and from vendors who are moving up and down. A whole variety of goods and services are on offer - clothing, watches, wooden elephants, ice cream, massage, temporary tatoes. A chair i
  25. That seems a reasonable deal - I've just booked Emirates Manchester - Bkk departing 25 August for £537. I did this through Thomas Cook who came up with the best price. Emirates suits me with a break about midway into the journey. The meals and cabin service I think are as good as you are going to get with tourist class. Also after making the trip problem free 10 times with them I have concluded that they are reliable. What exactly does the insurance consist of ?. I have an annual policy which costs me £90, which seems to cover me for all eventualities, although thankfully I have yet to test
