I have had a similar experience as Jacko, and our boat left from Bang Saray, we went about 20km out and it was very early am we left. The company i used are no loger around, but it may be worth a walk along Bali High Pier to see if any of the boats advertise. From what i can remember February is the best month to go.

Ive ben there a few times, each time i pass the cemetary and turn left, past the small museum and then turn right. All along that road are bars restaurants and hotels. I suggest you just go and get a hotel when you are there. Had alot of fun in the bars there and enjoyed the railway and museums etc.Stay a few nights and try to get out to the hot springs, they are a little way out of town, but not a problem getting a small trip organised by one of the travel shops.

You are 6 years away from retiremnet, so i think you should perhaps ask this question in about another 5 years and see how the land/laws are then. Hopefully nothing has changed for the worse and you will rent first and take time to explore Thailand first to make sure you are sure this is where you want to be. Holidays here are great, living here is different and has its issues, but overall - like many others, i am very happy here
