  1. Can't you guys get on some sort of auto-pay through your Thai bank accounts? Or, just pay in advance every six months or so. It would drive me nuts to have to worry about being on time with a bunch of bills every month.
  2. I used to like the non-stop Thai air flights from either JFK or LAX. The LAX flight used to leave in the early evening and arrive in BKK in the early morning, as I recall. Not a bad time to arrive, except that it's sometime hard to check into a hotel early in the morning without paying extra. The JFK flight left early afternoon, and got to BKK late the next afternoon. A better time. Of course, both flights no longer exist. Typically, I'm now stuck with a regular flight on a US carrier such as Delta, and, after a stop in Japan, I usually get to BKK around midnight. That's OK, but I'm
  3. Just in case some people don't know, you sometimes have to go to a second screen on the ATM. Select "other amount." Then you can enter 20,000 baht. And, depending on your account limit, you can do that again and again. I can usually make do for a day or so with 20,000 baht.
  4. I saw the story somewhere, but at this point I'm not sure where. A link from Thai Visa?
  5. The coldest I ever remember it being in Thailand was when the temperature got down to about 78 degrees F. All the girls were asking me if I was "cold." To me, it was the best day of my vacation, as I wasn't walking around drenched in sweat all day.
  6. The minute some big fat slob gets up on stage and starts dancing around, I pay my bill and leave. Why would anyone sit through that shit? This is one instance where it would be OK with me if the bouncers kicked the shit out of someone.
  7. Yea, well I don't sell US goods overseas, and I see no problem with being able to buy cheaper imports. Trade deficits probably don't matter. They have to do something with all those dollars.
  8. I'd like to see a stronger US dollar vs. all currencies. The Fed is working overtime to trash the dollar, but maybe they don't have as much power as they think they do? Wasn't the last Thai financial crisis the result of a credit bubble? Ever see all the credit card billboards in Bangkok? It's almost criminal, what the banks do. People making 10,000 baht a month don't need to be paying usurious interest rates to Citibank.
  9. Maybe we're still in the early stages of a long term trend. I'd like to see 38 baht to the dollar again.
  10. Believe it or not, I think you can rent safe deposit boxes on Soi 6. In case you need to cash in some bonds to fund your activities there, I guess.
  11. Sometimes, movies actually open earlier in Asia than they do in the USA.
  12. Some day I'm going to spend a week or two staying on Soi 6. I've never stayed at the Queen Vic, but I do stop by once in a while to have a bite to eat. Anyway, at least a few of the bars on the Soi have rooms for rent at a reasonable price. I'm not sure, though, which ones require entering via a back door after hours. Has anyone ever tried the Tornado Bar right near Second Road? They rent rooms, and some of the girls there are fun to talk to.
  13. I once met a guy who recommended this place, but Trip Advisor has a warning about thefts from the rooms.
  14. Maybe it would be easier to just start using Firefox or Chrome.
  15. The railing doesn't look very sturdy, does it, especially the way the posts seem to be attached. I give it a year or two.
  16. RIP I ran across him once when I was eating breakfast. He was at the next table playing with a laptop and Skype or something. Anyway, I didn't know who it was at the time. Later, I saw his picture and realized who that had been.
  17. Take this for what it's worth, which probably isn't much: Sometimes, the hard drives on the netbooks are partitioned. If you press a certain sequence of keys during start up (check the ASUS help page), you may be able to boot the computer from the partition containing the repair files. Then, just follow the on-screen directions to repair the OS. Or, depending on whether you have anything important on the hard drive itself, you might just want to reformat the drive and re-install the OS to factory specs.
  18. If you travel a lot and weight is a concern, the MacBook Air is the way to go. On the other hand, the new MacBook Pros aren't all that much heavier. For example, the 13 inch MacBook Air is about 1/2 pound lighter than the 13 inch MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro can have a Retina display. Not available on the MacBook Air. Right now I have the Air, but I might buy a new MacBook Pro next time around, unless the Air somehow gets a retina display. And don't forget to order the SSD drive. No moving parts to break.
  19. Evil is right. Why bother with Beach Road when there are many many other options at that hour? Hell, I can remember going to breakfast at 7AM and walking by beer bars that were STILL open from the night before.
  20. Just out of curiosity, why would you want to go there? It's not a real floating market, just a tourist trap.
  21. It all depends on what you eat and what you drink and how much. You can eat Thai street food for less than 50 baht a meal. A cheap beer in a beer bar will cost less than 100 baht. On the other hand, you can also spend 300 baht or more on a pub meal, and beer in a go go bar could be 150 baht.
  22. The video I saw the other day of Nana seems to be gone. However, it was supposed to be recent. I guess someone was trying to be funny.
  23. I just looked for a few I saw yesterday and now they seem to be gone! Anyway, it looks like a mess.
  24. Some links. I think they're recent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEV5OUQ9ayo
