  1. Getting stopped for no helmet
  2. I would say that you haven't looked at the difference between a bike that a Thai would ride, and the one stolen. They don't look anywhere alike. Stamped parts compared to machined parts. Wheels, breaks, frame shape, quality of paint are all very apparent. Even if a poor Thai didn't know the full value of 80,000 baht, thinking 1/2 that would be well worth taking from an easy mark like a farang riding alone. The bike was worth more than the average thai motorbike. Obviously someone was able to see the value, because they took it.
  3. I never said I didn't feel for the person that lost his bike. I'm also not one to blame the victim of a crime. The OP posted a warning. One which I don't need, and stated so. In a third would country like Thailand things should be done differently for your own safety, and to keep they things you own. Thai's already believe that all farang have big money. We are more likely to be singled out because of it. Being farang, no one is going to help you, even other farang. My house in Thailand had bars on the windows, a padlocked gate on the front door, a spiked fence, as guard dog, and a
  4. For the same reason that wearing gold in plane sight is. I don't know that what I said was all that macho. If some one tried to stop me on my motorcycle, I would expect them to want my money over the bike. I just wouldn't be stopped that easily. Running is not macho, and standing in front of a gun is dumb.
  5. There are some differences. They could not pick up a 500 pound motorcycle and drive off with it on their motorbike. I would not stop easily, and if I had to ram them, I would. if I saw someone pull a gun, I would hit the gas and let them try and catch me. While I can't outrun a bullet, they would be extremely unlikely to start shooting to try and get me stopped. I've seen the guns that the Thai police find on people. I wouldn't worry much about a Thai that has probably never shot a gun trying to hit a moving target with the crappy guns they typically have, and the 3 or 4 bullets they carr
  6. I've heard of Thai's stopping farang on on motorbikes and robbing them. The first mistake is stopping. Don't do it, even if you have to ram them. Any Thai man that wants to stop you on the road is up to no good. An expensive bike is like wearing gold, nothing more than a big sign saying somebody take this from me. Flashing expensive things that someone could grab and carry on a motorbike in is just not a good idea in Pattaya. Common sense should prevail over your urge to ride around flashing items that is a months to a years pay for the average Thai.
  7. I don't need a warning. Common sense would tell me not to ride an expensive bike in a third world country.
  8. Getting the letter from the embassy takes less than an hour, maybe faster now that they have an appointment schedule. You do not need a police or medical report. I don't see an advantage in keeping the type O visa for a year. I believe that on it's own, a Type O visa is harder to get than a Retirement visa. They just bundle it with the first retirement visa. If the type O was easy, no one would need to take visa runs. From reports of others, K Bank is easy to open an account in. I used Siam Commercial, I got it, but they gave me some grief, and at first told me that it was against the l
  9. I'll agree that it over simplifies, but that it's also very doable if you have either 800,000 Baht in a Thai bank, or a letter from the embassy. Though not possible if someone were to show up just before closing, but that is a given. If it's important, show up early. I recommended that cannonball get his embassy letter the day he arrives in BKK to avoid a trip to BKK and back. Were he to show up between 8 and 10 am, there is no reason he couldn't do everything all in one day. The lines are shorter at 8 am than 10 am
  10. There are several reasons that I like the bus better. Cost, much more luggage space, in an accident there is a much better survivability, air con vents at each seat that are adjustable, seats are bigger, more comfortable, and recline, you don't feel the potholes in the road as much, so sleep is possible. The drop off point in Hua Hin, is next to a Taxi stand, and walking distance to many hotels and guest houses. The likelihood of being able to get 5 seats is better on a bus than an 11 person van. The yellow buses are newer and nicer than the blue buses to BKK. The bus leaves from the Nort
  11. This picture is old, and I was amazed to find it online. The house is custom built on the edge of a beautiful park about a mile from where I was living at the time. The accident happened in less than a month after they moved in. I just happened to show up at the park the day it happened with my kids for a picnic. I wished we had a camera because I wanted a picture. Kinda weird to find one online.
  12. No, I already had the letter from the embassy having been told it was required, though I had the money in the bank and it wasn't. I went in just after they opened. They gave me a list of what I needed. I went back to the hotel and got my passport and embassy letter which took 15-20 minutes. Went to the bank and got a letter from them which took about 30 minutes.. I drove back to immigration 15 minutes Then went next door to immigration and got all my pictures and copies made 15 minutes. Went into immigration filled out the forms and turned everything in 10 minutes. Add another two minu
  13. Are you talking like 5 years or so? Don't some of the new condo's offer some sort of financing? Seems like I remember that from reading ads.
  14. Anyone coming in on a 30 stamp and wants a retirement visa should make it a priority. I applied for my retirement visa from a 30 day stamp. I have to many stamps in my passport to go back and look, but I believe I had 10 or 11 days left when I did it. I'm a bit of a procrastinator and knew I could always do a visa run if I had to. It's better to get it out of the way and not have to think about it. One of the reasons I put it off was because every time I asked anyone about it, either they, wanted me to pay for their help, or they had a friend they wanted me to pay to help, claiming it
  15. Are these worth doing? I collect pictures for a while, and then post them. Few others join in. Is it worth my effort? Does anyone look at and enjoy the pictures?
  16. Funny thread. The word luxury is out of place, and it looks like someone added a couple of zero's to the internet speed. However It looks well worth the money for someone on a budget.
  17. Guess there is a delay for me as well. I got a message from someone yesterday, but haven't seen anything in my e-mail about it yet.
  18. Reggie, I was able to live in Pattaya comfortably on 100,000 baht a month without having to watch my spending. That is less than it cost me to live in the US, and I sure don't enjoy my life as much. If you have enough to live on in the states, you have enough to live on in Thailand. If you don't have something else holding you there, make the move. Retiring in the US is just waiting to die, retiring in Thailand is living life. Most people on their death bed don't regret the things they have done, but regret the things they haven't done.
