Cathay Pacific is by far a much better airline than Eva Air. The service is among the best in the world they are one of only two airlines that are rated 5 stars, the other being Singapore Air. They fly state of the art 777 which is the best plane in the air today. Also if you are flying from the US your stop with Cathay Pacific will be in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is only a couple of short hours from Bangkok so the overall time is shorter.

If you can find a good deal just take it, better to pay a little more now than a lot more later. Xmas flights can be really hard to book, they always have lots of people on them and the prices are not cheap.

Thai Air is looking at flying a non stop route over the pole from Bangkok to New York. They will need to add long range 747's or 777's to the fleet but it is in the works. Flying over the pole really saves time. I like the CAL fight Newark to Hong Kong which is a over the pole flight and about five hours less total time to Bangkok than the non polar route.

In general the hotels and resorts that would rate four stars or more charge a guest fee. First thing does the Nextel phone you want to use have tri bands? Because not, all Nextel phones will work in Thailand. But if it does have the needed band then most larger phone shops can unlock the phone for you. In Bangkok you can go to Pantip Plaza and they will be able to help you. In Pattaya try the Big C Mall and you should get your phone unlocked. One last thought you have 60 days until you leave, several companies on Ebay will unlock the phone for you. Funding Thailand is not hard, if you have planned for a seven-figure retirement in the US. Because once you hit Thailand you find out that you no longer need 60-75K a year to live a great life. The baht buses run 24/ 7 but as others have already said late at night you may need to wait a short time in order to catch one. Many guys prefer Jomtien to Pattaya. I have one friend who lives in Jomtien nine months a year and he tells me he never has a problem. In fact many of the drivers know his route and pull over in front of the condo to wait for him.
