  1. My impression, and that's all it is, is that ACH transfers are possible only with Bangkok Bank. They have a US office making them possible. Haven't heard of any other Thai banks with US branches. Also, should add that you will probably need a long term visa or extension to open a Bangkok Bank account.
  2. ACH transfers from my US bank to Bangkok Bank have been posting within two business days recently.
  3. That's unlikely. Among other things, it would not play well with Christian evangelicals who are a major part of his base of support. Even a prudent de-emphasis would be difficult as multiple sources suggest that those same people have achieved quite a bit of influence within the military itself. Troops in Korea were recently banned from drinking during their first 30 days in country. That's going to get somebody killed, if it hasn't already, when somebody who desperately needs to go to the emergency room doesn't because they're drunk. There were always religious people in the milita
  4. Went to immigration to do my 90 day report this afternoon as I figured it was the only day it would not be insane this week. Perhaps, but it was busy enough. The young lady at the front counter only asked what I wanted to do and gave me a number rather than pre-checking my paperwork. There were fifteen ahead of me at counter #4 but things moved along quickly. The officer checked my TM.47, and then scanned the last blue receipt. If that was from the last 90 day report, that was interesting because it would have been before the first of the year thanks to out of country travel and my
  5. Got my "Are you alive?" form Social Security recently, completed it and put it in the mail. The only worrisome thing was that it said it was the second mailing. They had my current address and I have been here since April so the first one apparently disappeared into the cosmos.
  6. Given the number of people who were prescribed opioids in the US when they should have been taking aspirin, Thailand isn't the only place.
  7. One method of restricting access is to make certain areas or establishments off limits. Haven't heard of that in conjunction with Cobra Gold but my information isn't the best. Even in the early 80s in Korea, private residences in the market area outside Osan Air Base were off limits. Reputedly, the providers were a bit young. Only knew one guy who was busted for that. Apparently, town patrol followed him in. He wasn't court martialed but I'm sure it didn't help his career prospects. To add insult to injury, he didn't even get to accomplish the mission.
  8. For the more standard old guys' meds (no, not that one), I did go to Dr. Olivier once as the meds/dosages that are available in Thailand don't precisely match up with what is prescribed in the US. He did charge something for the visit but less than you would be hit for at BHP. He gave me a prescription with his signature and seal which I got filled at Fascino. The one difference which I did notice was that they gave me a detailed bill as to the meds, amounts and costs by drug rather just a receipt for the total cost. Having time on my hands, I used it to file a claim with Blue Cross/Blue S
  9. EP, I don't think I would be going to counselor Blair for my legal needs. Article 138 of the UCMJ provides The Christian Science Monitor has a rather more coherent account of what happened in 2006 when there was a change to the Manual for Courts Martial addressing prostitution.
  10. Once upon a time Subic/Olangapo would have received more favorable mention I would think. While I wasn't navy, I visited back in the 70s. Yes, it was a shit hole which made Angeles City look classy. I did know an old chief who got misty eyed talking about Mombasa, Kenya.
  11. It was after 1984, but that was the extent of my first hand knowledge.
  12. It's been there right along but the idea that the military might charge a troop just for paying a willing, of age female to have sex would have been laughable at least through 1984.
  13. I've been out a good long while but reasonably credible sources suggest the U.S. military is now seriously discouraging folks from engaging the services of prostitutes. Obviously, it still happens but guys have to be extremely discreet and an encounter with the local police could cause things to go completely to hell for them.
  14. One flight (well, actually two flights) is one flight, but had a very pleasant trip across the Pacific in August on JAL 787s. I like the darkening windows as opposed to window shades. It's a very quiet aircraft. I went to sleep while we were taxiing out at Narita. When I woke up, I wasn't certain we were airborne until I looked at the tracking map.
  15. While I lean "If it ain't Boeing, I'm not going," this is getting ridiculous.

While the GFE provider is long legged (yes!), I'm still 5 inches taller. Recently, I find I have to stride out to keep up with her.

Put your money in Bank of America. They have branches all over hell.
  18. In southeastern Virginia, you definitely wanted to check your rear view mirror if you were going to stop on a stale yellow. More than any place else in the country, a yellow light was the signal to floor it.
  19. Let us know when you find a rounders bowler/pitcher, or whatever, who throws 90-100mph.

Had four friends/acquaintences from work across the country die within a few months of each other a few years ago. The youngest was a 39 year old mother of two. That will give you pause. On a lighter note, it's a bit disconcerting to realize that a significant number of the old goats I see stumping around Pattaya are younger than I am.
  21. Part of my walk out the door kit is a high limit credit card. At the very least, it simplified things a few years ago, when I woke up in the Bangkok Hospital Rayong. For the U.S. contingent, if you have health insurance other than Medicare, check to see if it includes coverage outside the country.
  22. At the south end of Tappraya in Jomtien, the thunder wasn't quite that loud, but it was extended. Water on the floor near one of the sliding glass doors so pretty windy.
  23. A guy is down in the dumps, maybe even clinically depressed. He thinks, "I know, go to Pattaya, drink copious amounts of booze, and screw my brains out." So he does it. Instead, the booze, and, possibly, other recreational substances, along with being away from his support system, makes things much worse and he does something irrevocable. Not an original thought, but no idea where I saw it.
