  1. Apparently it took off in afterburner, which would have been extremely noisy and as impressive as hell at night.
  2. You would think so. A few years ago, I cashed in frequent flier miles and got business class with Delta for the big hops. Going I was on a 767 out of Portland. The seat was a torture device. I was happy when I got on the Narilta-Bangkok flight and had a semi-comfortable economy class seat. Returning, business class on a Delta 777 was far better.
  3. Economy to economy I would say China Air is slightly better. No experience with business class with either.
  4. That would be cruelty to animals.
  5. No, I didn't buy any.
  6. If you go down this one unnumbered soi off third road--oh, not that kind of corned dog.
  7. Just finished Hue 1968 by Mark Bowden. I highly recommend it for those who like military history. It's a great read. Bowden is the author of Blackhawk Down and several other books. As the name suggests, this is the story of the Battle of Hue during the Tet offensive in 1968. Bowden tells many individual stories, but also gives an overview of how the battle was fought. He obviously picked the stories he tells. He mixes guys who absolutely seemed to be in their element with those who were bloody terrified but still did what they were told. He mentions only a very few who cut and
  8. Oh yes and business class out of Narita as well.
  9. Most often I fly Korean out of Seattle. Last month I took Eva from Bangkok because I could get Premium Economy for a not unreasonable fare. For the return trip next month I'm cashing in frequent flier miles for JAL business class out of San Diego--whoo hoo.
  10. Which poses an interesting question. You will get corned beef hash occasionally in the US. Yet I don't recall ever eating corned beef as such or seeing it for sale. Where they getting it for the hash?
  11. You can select the option for do not convert and still go ahead with the transaction. It will be a better rate, but you won't know what it is until you check your account.
  12. UK site acknowledging the US lineage of spam. http://www.spam-uk.com/history/ Not a direct answer as to where spam marketed in Thailand might originate, but it seems spam is very big in South Korea where it is produced locally. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-24140705
  13. Last time I actually had spam was probably in a McDonalds in Guam.
  14. Okay, I'll admit it, you improved on an American invention.
  15. Eva used to fly some 747 freight/passenger combinations. Got one of those rattle traps from Seattle to Taipei about ten years ago. Probably the most uncomfortable flight I've ever been on including a couple of trips from Hawaii to Korea on military transports.
  16. I have been seeing some of those changes/innovations with Alaska Airlines for several years. Their fleet is all 737s, but Alaska, despite the name, is not a regional carrier and they have transcontinental routes and flights to Hawaii so they do have 5 to 6 hour flights. With 737s, they never had IFE but they do have tablets with preloaded movies for a fee. Also, with the advent of power outlets in every seat along with the ubiquity of tablets and even smart phones, a major share of passengers can bring their own entertainment. For some years now, if you want to eat in economy on an A
  17. Excellent service but if you arrive in the evening, I would have a plan B in case they are sold out for their remaining buses.
  18. First bus to Suvarnabhumi is 7am. http://airportpattayabus.com/v1/ The web site has info about the free transfer service between Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang.
  19. Google is your friend. The link in my OP is to a page on the embassy's public web site and that has the Social Security office email address and not the address for an individual employee.
  20. 14C in Anchorage, Alaska. Enjoy not sweating but it can warm up any time!

  21. Thailand is a sovereign nation so I won't say that it couldn't make checking insurance a responsibility of the airlines but: That would be a significant variation from the standard international practice of holding the airlines for verifying passports and/or visas valid for entry. If Thailand wants to require medical insurance, it can make that a requirement for getting a visa and it would have the option of ending entry without visa for those of us who have it available at present. EDIT Airlines typically do check for outbound/return tickets but that is well within their expertise and can
  22. Excellent WiFi on Eva flight from Taipei to Seattle.

  23. Okay, someone has to ask. What's the growth on the top of the bun?
  24. No blips with Chrome on an Android tablet.
