We are going to book our flights for end of January this week.

Probably would have booked EVA again but the cheapest fare coming up from LHR is currently the Quantas flight.

Any comments would be appreciated - I have never flown Quantas.

Jambo,

It's many years since I flew Qantas (HKG-BKK) but they seemed pretty decent and I think they are still well-regarded. The only obvious downside I can see is that, like BA, they cram in their passengers quite tightly. Probably OK for an hour or two but would do my head in on a 12 hour flight.

If you have a trip booked on the new EVA aircraft (post Sep 15th) I would wait until I had made that trip before booking. Besides better Jan fares probably coming along towards the end of Oct, the 777 is a hugely more comfortable aircraft than the old 747s.

Tom

p.s. I hope you have checked your fixture list and aren't going to miss any of the big games! 1luv

Hi

Quantas have better food and have individual monitors for choosing your own films etc. Usually find Eva cheaper and it's direct like Quantas. If same price Quantas, if Eva 100-150 pounds cheaper I'd choose Eva. Usually Quantas fly one way and BA the other(shared route).

As an Aussie, I feel I must correct your spelling. QANTAS has no U after the Q. You see it stands for: 'Queensland And Northern Territory Air Service'. Sorry to be a prat, but heh, all in the name of world knowledge. :)

After all that - as a passenger I gave up on them a while ago. In comparison to the Asian cabin service, eg; Singapore Airlines, they are utter crap. Comes down to our culture I think. IMHO, deep down we find serving customers a bit 'beneath us', and therefore once you scratch the surface, the cabin crew are fair up emselves and would rather strut around than actually do their jobs.

As for safety, you cannot fault them.

"As for safety, you cannot fault them"

Except for that time they ran off the end of the runway, in BANGKOK !!!!!!!!!

The aircraft was repaired, but it cost a fortune to do so.

I have used them a couple of times, aircraft are OK, but cabin service was mediocre.

Lemons spot on here.

Several family members and friends work for Qantas and in my scores of flights with them over the years, I've always found them an airline of extremes, i.e. the best service you've ever had or the worse.

Maybe its our "convict" blood (i.e. Brits would steal a loaf of bread to get to the promised land :D ) but we don't make the world's best waiters until you're viewed as a 'mate' then they can't do enough for you.

The "Flight Director", read head steward, of one flight knew my old neighbor of a similar rank. End result, mid-flight upgrade, endless flow of booze, and two souvenier bottles of bubbly and Bourbon for the Xmas party.

Meanwhile, the other crewmembers are too worried about what they should wear to the New Year's Eve party at Shazza and Trev's pad to take care of the other passengers.

There safety record is also showing cracks. Apart from the Bangkok nose job another plane made an emergency landing in Osaka only a few days ago after a faulty singal set off the smoke alarm. Several passengers were injured in the scramble to evacuate.

That said, I'd still fly Qantas any day ahead of second-rate carriers who can't afford to buy new planes, nor properly service them.

Many thanks for all the comments and my apologies for the incorrect spelling of Qantas.

Ingrained habit to follow a "Q" with a "U" plus the fact that my spelling always has been a bit dodgy!

So to summarise:

The inflight service is either very good or shite depending on whether Trev or Shaz has a party to go to or not!

The safety record is great apart from,...... when its not! :D

That clears that up then!

I came to the conclusion some time ago that I would have to trade quality of transport for quantity of visits. So its cattle class 3 or 4 times a year and price but direct flights only.

We are flying EVA at the end of October on the new 777. The price currently for end of January is quoted at £464 on Quantas and £504 for EVA. Not a lot in it now and as January is still relatively high season I doubt if the price will come down much.

Tom,

I will miss Hibs away in October but the next home game against the wee team is 3 days before we plan to leave at the end of Jan! Will miss Aberdeen at home though but thats a small price to pay for 3 weeks in Funtown!

Looks like I had the reserve crew when I flew Quaint Arse for the one and only time. When I asked for a second drink I was almost given a card with a recommendation for AA!! Apart from that, good, solid, reliable...nothing more to add.

Used to fly Qantas in my early days before discovering EVA Evergreen Deluxe a couple of years ago.

Got to admit that although the EVA Deluxe comfort and in flight entertainment takes precedence, my Qantas cabin service was far better on the 3 trips I made.

Saying that, I would rather go for the comfort and always fly EVA Deluxe now, even though you are expected to go to sleep after the first meal. :wanker

I was told by the sister of a BA engineer that QANTAS stood for Queers And Nancies Training As Stewards. :fight

It's a few years since I last flew with them and despite the fact that I managed to get an upgrade to Business from Cattle Class I wasn't exactly impressed with them. In these days, they didn't have the seat back TV's, though BA had already installed them.

My flight to Bangkok was the one and only time that a plane I've been on had to return to the gate immediately after being pushed back from it - and not due to any mechanical problems! :bow . Ended up arriving in Bangkok 2 hours late as a result of someone's incompetence! :wanker

i would not fly Qantas if you gave me a ticket....did a trip around the globe with them and every flight was a nightmare....it was like,if you spoke with an oz accent you got treated like a piece of shit......i have only flown with SIA and THAI AIR since.....

Even though you book a Qantas flight you could be on the BA plane as they codeshare flights . Basically every night there's 1 BA flight & 1 Qantas flight leaving LHR within 1 hour of each other & the same happens on the return leg . When you're booking you could end up on either flight but you can tell which flight you're on by the flight no & departure time .

When I travelled with them I was on the Qantas plane outbound & the BA on the return . The Qantas plane was much better & the staff a lot more pleasant & I would try to use their plane if I go that route again .

Yeah, well we have an sort of excuse for the 'Don Muang golfcourse detour'.

You see it was a female pilot who pushed her luck in persisting in a landing during a sudden downpour, despite being advised to 'go around' by her copilot - WHY? Turns out she was feeling the pressure of being one of very few female pilots in the fleet and was coming up for a performance review, where the number of 'go arounds' are scrutinised, as apparently they cost a fortune.

As for the aircraft, that is a tale of corporate image and arrogance. You see Qantas has NEVER 'lost' an aircraft to an accident and they weren't about to start with this one. Apparently all and sundry told em the plane was a rightoff, but NO they 'repaired' it. Of course, Qantas would never use it again, and neither would any other 1st world airline, so it was quietly flogged off to some less particular carrier. I'm told that on takeoff, to counter it's urge to turn left, the pilot has the left and right flaps set on completely different angles, and the thing crabs into the sky. Fucking scary if true.

Reading this thread is just like reading the comments you would get if someone was to post

"Whats Misty's bar like these days?"

The replies will inevitably be very subjective depending upon what happened to one particular individual at any one given moment in time.

I use that as an example merely because I keep seeing photo's of various boardies with one, and often more, great looking tg's from that establishment and all inevitably singing its praises. Everytime I have been there, its been shite but I will give it another chance!!

Anyway, its been good fun reading all the comments and I will have one final attempt to spell "Qantas" correctly as I noticed that having previously apologised I then did it again several times!

PS - I think after all that we are going to book EVA again!
