Just 15 months ago, just one month prior to my first visit to Pattaya I hurt my back while moving from one apartment to another. The pain was so bad I'd spend most of my time on the couch and would use crutches to move around. If I had to go to the restroom I'd ask myself: "How bad do I need to go?" Then I'd hobble to the toilet and just hang on those crutches while urinating. The pain would be very severe by the time I had finished. Then I started seeing a chiropracter and I improved quickly. Made the trip, this first one lasting just 10 days. Got a couple of foot massages which helped and one oil massage. Back in the U.S. continued to see the chiropracter. Situation improved each week and visits to the chiropracter which had started with everyday treatments eventually wound down to just two per month. The vertebrae in my lower back were the problem as they had compressed with advancing age.

Took another trip to Pattaya, this time for one month, then still another, that time for two months. But no trips to the chiropracter. I found one girl who would give me massages which seemed to help a lot and would see her a couple times a week. In spite of the back trouble I was still able to maintain a running and bicycling exercise program while in the U.S. and now that I've moved permanently to Pattaya I still am able to run a couple of miles on the beach and do long walks.

But the girl I have relied on for my massages (she would give me a one hour foot massage followed by 1/2 hour on my shoulders and back) is no longer giving massages. She recommended a friend she worked with who I had gotten to know. This friend has 4 years of experience and seems to know what she is going. But after my back had started to hurt again, and I went to her for a massage she asked me if I wanted her to give me all her power, meaning a very hard massage. I said that's what I wanted. She'd bend me in different positons similar to what a chiropracter would do, but the manipulation of my spine was much more prolonged. But all of this worsened my condition and the next morning I was even worse off. The day after that I went to a spa my little TG recommended where I got a massage lasting one hour but most of it was devoted entirely to my lower back. I felt much better afterwards.

Sorry guys for the long story, but I'm sure some of you have similar back problems to mine. As I understand it, the basic treatment whether performed by a chiropracter or masseuse is to widen the gap between the vertebrae which alleviates the pain for one thing while giving long term relief. A foot massage I would think just gives a more temporary relief since the effect is more on the nerves rather than to widen the gag on the vertebrae. From what I have noticed when a gal who knows what she is doing manipulates the spine with her hands or while walking on it, applying pressure with her knee, etc. it seems the spine is squeezed in such a manner that the vertabrae tends to get separated to a slight degree thus providing relief. Perhaps consistent and even more treatments per month would give longer term relief from the problem?

So what do you think? Chiropracter here in Pattaya? Or Thai massage? And where does one find the best chiropractic care here at reasonable cost? Or does getting the right massage treatment perform basically the same thing? I am also wondering why that one massage I got made me feel much worse instead of better?

I was recovering from a pinched disc back in april. The thai massage didn't help at all. sometime seemed a little worse sometime better. Tried to find a chiropractor but none of the thai knew what I was talking about even though the understood my phuut lange. 2guns 2guns

Try David Pack. His practice is in the grounds of the Nova Lodge Hotel on Second Road. I believe he's Canadian, his number is 038361077. He's helped me. I don't know of any other chiropractor in Pattaya.

Why don't you go to the Bumragard Hospital in Bangkok and get an MRI of your spine to see what's going on? Shouldn't cost too much. I'd certainly do that before I let any Thai girl twist me around with a "massage." That could make matters worse.

I just got over a 2 month episode of low back/sciatic pain per a degenerated disc. This is just a repeat of a problem I've had for years. Have you tried exercises similar to the ones noted here:

http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/category.cfm?topcategory=Spine

And as hillbilly noted, bad mattress = back pain.

I assume you've had medical workups in the past and this is a recurrence of an old problem. I find walking is good but standing in one place or sitting for a prolonged period is bad. To avoid slouching for a prolonged period, I now use a stool while at the computer instead of an office swivel chair. I can't imagine Thai massage being of anything more than a very brief palliative. I've never used a chiropractor.

I went to my chiroprator at home this morning because my back is giving me some pain. Like you, these visits usually fix the problem. I need to make sure my back is in good shape for my next visit to Pattaya next month.

My advice is go and see the chiropractor in Pattaya, especially since a number of guys on the Board say he's a Canadian and they recommend him. Get as many treatments from him as you need.

I would also go for oil massages in Pattaya. TTM in my opinion is a cranking around of your back which might do more harm than good. With an oil massage you can get the masseuse to work on the muscles around the back and hips. My muscles usually spasm a bit when the vertebrae start compacting and sometimes the muscle pain is the worst and I think it can slow recovery. If you get those relaxed it might complement the chiroprator and speed recovery or at least make you feel better. Ask the chiroprator but go see him if you're having problems. You need your back in shape for the action.

I will add my usual comment posted to the various back pain threads on this board...

If you want a good chiropractor in Pattaya, Dr. Pack is your man. However, if you want to be forever free of pain and realize that your back is not injured, (even though you believe and have all the proof in the world from many doctors that it is), PM me and I will share all the info I have. I suffered for 18 YEARS with both chronic and acute back pain and herniations, degenerations, ad nauseum...I am a walking encyclopedia of back pain remedies...and I am cured 100%...'nuff said. peace.

Quit running? I've been running since I was 14. Easier to quit cigarettes which I did two years ago. Was going to get a massage today. But I never did, but I did walk from Soi 6 to the Long Beach Hotel on Soi 16 in Naklua, then ran back to Soi Six and onto Skytop along the beach, a distance I'd estimate at 2 miles. In fact, I ran right through that terrific downpour we had today and I felt great after doing it.

I really don't think the running has much to do with my back trouble. Too much boom booming, well maybe. Not having a great mattress might have something to do with worsening the problem too. Perhaps slouching over this keyboard might too. But I definitely do have a problem. I think going to the chiropracter recommended by some of you would definitely help a great deal. But I do think getting some of these massages alleviates the problem for a few days. Recently by the way, I've found a place where one can get a one hour massage for 100 baht.

Still wondering why I can get a few days relief from these massages. That is why is works to the extent that it does.

I think between natural muscle atrophy and associated spasms, pressure is put on the spine. A good Thai massage, like chiropratic manipulations manipulate the muscles to relieve the spasms and counteract some of the atrophy. A bad Thai massage can cause more pain if too much pressure is applied to the damaged spine area. That is my experience. I have had several bouts with chronic back pain, but right now my back is fine and i regularly run and do martial arts. My secret is stretching and keeping the abdomen in good shape. I will still be getting daily massages during my upcoming trip :chogdee2

I suffer from occasional back pain & it is usually irritated by all the extra action I get in Pattaya . I can also recommend David Pack as he will usually sort me out in a couple of visits .

It's a good idea to go for an oil massage before you visit the chiropractor . When you injure a joint the muscles around the joint usually tense up to protect the joint from further damage , though it often makes the pain worse . An oil massage will ease the tension in those muscles and will allow the chiro to manipulate the joint a lot easier . That will mean fewer visits to the chiro & a quicker recovery . Also saves money as an oil massage is a lot cheaper than the chiro .

Sadly, major back-pain is one of the most common forms of pain out there and plagues many from the hard-working manual laborer to the be spectacled young man sitting in front of a computer monitor all day. Chiropractic services is the best remedy for this lower back pain but people seek medical attention first and take chiropractic services as the last option. More often than not, surgery is out of the question be it because of various reasons. These reasons range from a lack of support from the wallet deities or because of (as in my case) sheer mind-numbing terror of the knife. There’s also the time off that one must take during the recovery from surgery. If not surgery, then drugs some may say. In many cases however, drugs to deal with the pain may work, but in my experience, they are only effective for short periods of time. Another problem with these drugs is that they must often be taken regularly. If not regularly then only when the pain is already peaking. This is where Santa Barbara Chiropractors and Chiropractic services goes to the picture.

When many people suffer from lower back pain, they typically see their family doctor to get some medication to mask the pain. Although this is quite common, it actually does not make much sense. The reason is because there is lower back pain relief that does not include medication. It actually heals the pain, so you have no need for any kind of medication. This natural treatment can be found at your local chiropractor. Some people end up visiting the chiropractor after they have seen their family doctor because anything they did was not working, so they thought they would give a Santa Barbara chiropractors a try.

Because chiropractic services are specialized in lower back pain relief, it does not make sense to make this treatment a last resort. You can save yourself a lot of hassle and pain just by seeing them when the pain starts. The main reason that they are so good at this type of relief is because they are able to pinpoint the source of the pain. Instead of giving you medication to hide the pain, they actually work with the source to get it back to its normal state. You no longer will have pain because the source is fixed. Visiting a chiropractor for lower back pain relief is gaining popularity. This mainly is because people are tired of trying home remedies prescribed by their physician that do not work. They hear stories of people they know visiting a chiropractor and then not having any problems or issues with their back anymore. Because this pain can be quite excruciating, it is a nice change when you can find a place that actually will treat it instead of just lessen the pain.

The main reason that a complete heal is favored over temporary relief is because many lower back issues are reoccurring because of a specific movement. If you can get lower back pain relief from a chiropractic services, it really makes sense to take it. You will not have to worry about watching your movements because you do not want to flare up your back. It will not flare up because it will be healed. Depending on the severity of the pain, the relief could take anywhere from one treatment to several treatments. The upside of this is that, once it is all done, you will not have any back issues. The lower back carries a great deal of responsibility. It is the center of our skeletal system and can bear a great deal of the body’s weight, even when lifting isn’t executed properly. This is why there are many people in the world who frequently experience lower back pain, or “Lumbago.” And chiropractic services is the best for this.

I have to agree with our chiro friend - visiting a chiropractor should be your first step after suffering a back injury.

If you want to avoid injury in the future I can really recommend that you take up yoga!

I was visiting a local guy who does physiotherapy & deep tissue massage for some treatment on a sports injury. He also teaches yoga & advised me that it would help my condition. He was starting a class locally so I went along to try it out & 8 weeks later I'm still going. The class age ranges from 35 to 75, male and female but he is going at a pace that suits everyone. He gets us to do various stretches which develop into full yoga poses as we loosen up each week. He asks us where we are stiff/sore then shows us special stretches to help those areas.

Most of us hadn't really realised how much we had progressed until last week when a new guy started. He was in his 40's, an ex soldier & in good shape but alas not very flexible. Even the 75 year old guy was able to stretch further. I know that I'm a lot better shape since I started the yoga. I rarely get lower back pain now but when I do 10 minutes of stretching & its gone. I hadn't been able to touch my toes for years, couldn't get much further than my knees. Now I can bend double & put my fingers under my toes!

I suggest that you try Eden Masage in Soi Diane or in Pattaya Klang. These ladies do massage, not sex (its not impossible but...) and they will do as you ask and where you need. They are cheap, cheery and good at what they say they do and thats massage. Most of the ladies are older and married but if its a massage that you look for, look no further.

I cannot recommend David Peck at all, i found him to be useless and expensive. I went to the International hospital on soi 4 and they have a really good back treatment center and it was half the cost of David Peck. The Thai word for physio is pronounced "Gia Paab"

I used the physio at PIH (10 visits in 14 days) when my back pain was beginning to verge on the ridiculous. It done the business for me, but it was a short-term fix and I was back to square one within a couple of months. I'm sure the stretching rack came straight from the set of Braveheart though. :ninja:

But seriously Tom, did you expect to get fixed up properly in just 10 days?? I spent 4 months and feel that the service was brilliant and the stretch rack was brutal, but thats what it was mean't to be. Did you shout "Freedom" when they stretched you lol

Mick,

At the time I just wanted relief from the pain - I was in Pattaya with not much arranged during the day, so it was worth it for me. As an aside, I went into hospital in Had Yai for an operation just over two years ago. In UK, it's a general anaesthetic job, but they offered to do it with an injection into the spine, which I went along with. Coincidence, or not, I have no idea, but one of the side effects was that my back pain pretty much disappeared overnight. Other than waking up and my back feeling a bit tight (just doing a couple of stretches sorts it out) I've not had any real back pain since.

A real success story. That's good to hear!

Intriguing to know what brings on the back pains.

I think I have nailed it down to riding my motorbike... seems like I get it after a longish ride.
