Hi,

I'm sure it's all a revenue raising scam.

Well Gordon needs the extra funds, as in the same budget speech, he announced his intention to award child benefit to women with unborn sprogs  :D <grin

GOD HELP US ALL

The single man is finished in the U.K. now.

Hi,

I'm sure it's all a revenue raising scam.

I`m sure your right.

Reading the article it declares that the transport sector accounts for 30% of carbon emissions, with aviation accounting for a fifth of that.So if my maths is right, aviation only accounts for 6% which probably includes commercial cargo, not just passengers. Not really going to make a lot of difference to carbon emissions, particularly when the likes of China don`t seem too troubled about reducing pollution.

Government here keeps raising taxes but there seems to be no real benefit to the country. :cry2

Meanwhile taxes on long haul flights could rise between £40 and £80

:cry2 :poke

So if you buy a ticket say in Jan would

you have to pay the added tax

It seems to be down to dates of travel, not the date you buy your ticket. I bought one this Tuesday for February and I'm expecting the travel agent to demand more money soon.

Hi,

This is the critical point which make any actions in UK useless even if they were well intentioned. I think they are using global warming as an excuse to raise taxes and screw us. Ten years ago John Prescott was talking about an "integrated travel plan" or somesuch. What's happened that ? Public transport is in a mess and very expensive. If they were serious they would put lots of money into the rail system and have cheaper fares. As this has not happened we must assume it's all a joke.

I wonder if they have considered the affect that this will have on tourism in the country??

I can confirm they only care about introducing more stealth taxes. to pay benefits to 'hard working families' like tax credits. One example, a women earning £38k Gross, with two children, living alone, was effectively getting about 70% of her tax/national insurance payments refunded, by way of tax credits :D <grin

Utter madness. Meanwhile the single guy gets NO help and is shafted on a daily basis.

England is shite - don't come here

Same same everywhere in the west now. If you are not part of a 'family' you are a nobody. Well, except when it comes to paying more tax. All you hear at budget and election time is family this and family that... :D

Yes, it's a vote winner for sure.

My Father and I amuse ourselves listening to speeches and interviews from Gordon Brown. We always try and guess how many times the words 'hard working families' will be trotted out <grin I'm voting Conservative at the next election - anything to stop Brown becoming Prime Minster.

Back on topic

I reckon this 'green tax' is a unlimited pot of gold - the air tax will rise every year at 10%+.

I wonder if it could be avoided by booking through a foreign travel agent site? or maybe getting Eurostar to Paris and flying from there?

No, it's on flights originating in the UK.

as far as I am aware the planet is dying. Thats quite sad. The government is at least making an effort to address the issue.

However as in all politics there is hypocricy. Why spend £20 Billion developing yet another airport terminal (Heathrow T5) Which I assume is to ensure that more flights are able to enter and leave the UK. Surely they must have considered global warming when making this decision? Didnt they?

There has to be some sort of balance in this. By hitting Long haul flights what the govt is saying in essence is that if you are in a position to afford to go on holiday to long haul destinations, then it is these people who should bear the brunt of the taxation. In doing so it means the people who cannot afford to go so far away are not hit so hard and it means that they can still afford their cheap holidays to europe.

The real key to it though is whether they use the money raised to fund scientific research which will prevent the planet from decaying any further. Somehow I doubt it! But politics is politics and politicians are not interested in you or me or planets or education or health. They are interested in money and votes. Thats the reality!

Govts will tax anything they can get away with as long as it doesnt cost votes. Thats the reason for this.

On the positive front it may provoke an airline price war........who knows!

All this was announced in a pre-budget speach, when is the actual date for the new tax?

Also is it just business class tax that is increasing or economy as well?

I think at the moment the tax to LOS is £20 economy and £40 business/first.

I've been reading some of the Budget, this bit doesn't really make sense unless they are intending the increase to reduce the number of travellers, and hence flights;

7.82 In the light of this, the Government recognises the role that air passenger duty can

play in tackling the climate change impact of aviation. The Government will therefore

increase air passenger duty rates (APD) with effect from 1 February 2007. The intra-EU

economy rate will rise from £5 to £10 and the non-economy rate from £10 to £20. The

long-haul economy rate will rise from £20 to £40 and the non-economy rate from £40 to

£80. This will deliver carbon savings of around 0.3 MtC a year by 2010-11. When the effect of

non-carbon dioxide emissions is taken into account this has a climate change impact

equivalent to saving around 0.75 MtC per year by 2010-11. To ensure consistency within the

air passenger duty system, the scope of the European rates of air passenger duty will also be

widened to include all of the signatories to the European Common Aviation Area Agreement,

with effect from 1 February 2007.

Any other interpretations?

Here's an idea. If you want to do something for the enviroment take an indirect flight. Ever wondered what the CO2 emissions are for lugging that extra fuel around the globe to save an hour for re fuelling?

There must be an equation that extrapolates an extra take off /ie extra fuel useage against fuel transit.

31st january looking good then :D also before Chinese new Year :wanker

When my flight arrives back from LOS we are usually in the stack over NE London for 15-20 mins, if the arrival traffic was better scheduled no holds would reduce emissions. ie: no increase in tax :P

Oh I see. So they're telling us that increasing taxes lowers carbon emissions.

Just think. If they doubled income tax and VAT they could save the whole bloody planet. :thumbup
