Why pay ridiculous amounts of money for just a place to sleep?

Recommended Posts

I have stayed in cheap hotels (Woraburi Inn Bkk, Eastiny) and 5 star hotels (Sheraton Bkk and Pattaya, Westin Bkk, Hyatt Bkk) in Thailand and personally depends how long i am staying or if its an occasion like my birthday then i might splash out a bit more. I have to say that staying in a 5 star establishment like Sheraton Pattaya gives you a great feeling and at the end of your holiday you can go back to work feeling refreshed and well rested.

£50 a night wont even get you a room in most B&Bs in London and to pay that amount for a 5 star hotel IMO is a mega bargain. Also like some have posted above we all have our preferences and i sometimes wonder why guys stay in 500bht hotels and spend 10k bht each night on drinking binges, ringing the bell, buying 5-10 lady drinks and think nothing of it but complain about other who might not drinkas much and have other priorities which is a nice comfortable hoiday environment to chill and recharge the batteries.

Basically, i have found that staying in 5 star is like having a holiday away from the holiday of Pattaya. After a week or two of nightly barhoping, all night partying and many many girls, at the end of your holiday you go back home feeling like you need a rest to recover from the holiday but when you go 5 star you get to sleep and spend your days in luxury and you are pampered and waitedupon by the staff and when you go back home you feel well rested and relaxed.

A place like Sheraton Pattaya if you have never stayed there is just a different world to your Flippers and Sunshine hotels. Personally i would rather stay in a place like this and not ring that stupid bell.

Whats wrong with me wanting to stay in the Marriott? in my opinion nothing at all!

I work hard and when me and my wife come to Pattaya we like to stay in the Marriott for several reasons. So its got nothing to do with anyone else apart from me and my wife, why judge me because I stay in the Marriott!

I dont judge u because u pay xxx baht for where u stay, I couldnt give a shite!

I got better things to do such as lie by the Marriott pool and swig bottles of cristal champagne like there is no tomorrow :drunk

Sorry Makavelli for using your words as an example, it was not my intention to flame you in person or anyone else!

I apologize for that and wish you and the missus a pleasant stay at the Marriot.

I just wanted to start a debate about the value of money and what you can get for it in the way of accomodation in Thailand!

During my 20 years of travelling to almost every province in the Kingdom, I have slept on if not an airmatress at least a sarong on the beach, I've stayed in tents and dormitories in national parks and in 40 baht simple bambu and coconutpalm huts on the beach without electricity and using a bucket of water as shower, I've stayed in hot sweaty mosquito infested local brothels with peepholes in the walls to noisy cubicles in BKK Guesthouses, most expensive place I ever stayed in thailand was one night at the Little Duck Hotel in central Pattaya for 800 baht, which was one of the dirtiest oldest and funkiest places I ever stayed in, I'd rather sleep on the beach under the stars anytime!

What I want to say is that wether one spends 1000 dollars or 10 dollars you cannot pay for happiness there are other things that counts more!

But it buys sex and alcohol so why not a nice hotel room?!?!

Thank you for the apology Plahgat.

By me and my wife staying in the Marriott for a month this does not mean that we r paying for happiness at all!

We want to stay in the Marriott because we stayed there last Summer and really enjoyed our trip. I has been to several places in Thailand during 18 trips and I am only 26 and stayed in a range of different rated hotels! But now when I go to Thailand I like to stay in a decent hotel and enjoy my holiday with my wife.

I do not judge u because u want to spend $5-10 on a hotel room for the night, I dont care. I do not go on like I am big spender either because that is not the case. I come to Pattaya to see my mates and party but it just happens that when I head back to my hotel the door I walk in has a Marriott sign above it and a model plane sticking out of the building next to it!

Sure, but it's not the price of the bed that makes you happy, it's what happens in it! :D

Once again I want to apologise, because when I first read your post in another thread I didn't know that you were going on a holiday with your wife, I thought you where just going for the usual whoremongering and partying like most members on here! Lol :D :clap1 :D

Let's get one thing straight the Pattaya Marriott and Hard Rock Hotel are not 5 star hotels. At best they are 4 star. Decent places but nothing special. I've stayed at 5 star properties and they are a couple of cuts above what the Pattaya properties offer.

When I take my family or do a Dad & Daughter trip I stay at better hotels as I know what I'm getting and yes, I pay for it out of my own pocket. :clap1 When I travel on my own, I stay at places like Sky-Top or the Flippers. Clean, safe and reasonably priced. I'm getting ready to do a D & D trip and I won't be staying at Sky-Top.

I have come to believe it is a waste of money to "overspend" on hotel rooms. I just got back from 14 nights at the Vault Hotel and belive me, it is very nice! But, while the girls were "impressed" it did not improve the sex in anyway. I am of the thinking that clean/comfortable is better than luxurious, IMHO. Maybe if spending more time in the room was a factor than I could see paying for luxury/pampering. But as it was, I was actually in the hotel room for maybe 6 hours per day. I'll stick with middle quality places like Areca Lodge or Sabaii Inn in the future.

Just read your post about the Vault and if you are paying 2800bht which is alot for a room in Pattaya anyway then for an extra 700bht you would have lifts and not climbing 4 floors of stairs, 24hr room service, his/hers robes, slippers, ironing board, swimming pool (3 at sheraton), gym, restaurants (3 at sheraton) and great views at the sheraton or marriott.

Also its not about impressing the girls its about personal preferences. If you only spend a few hours in your room then i can imagine you are out partying day and night and spending lots of money in town. I like to party but i also like to chill out at times and not a big drinker so i would rather spend the extra money on a nicer room.

700 baht is a ST on soi 6. 14 days is 14 STs. I will trade 14 STs for the slippers and robes anyday.

I do party all day and all night and drinking is a big expense for me. But I don't eat in fancy restaurants often, so I save money there. Never heard of "extra money" so can't comment on that. I have come to conclude I would rather pay the girls/bars than the hotel owners since I am not myself too particular and do not spend much time in the hotel rooms.

It really is up to the individual. Some people like nice things. Why pay 4 times more for a Benz than a Toyota? You can subsist on noodle soup so why eat out? I can drink JW Black but I could just sit by the pool and drink cheap rum and coke. I surely don't need those Partagas that I indulge in on occasion.

Some people have more money than they need so they spend it.

I just wish I had that problem. :banghead

Well, I haven't stayed at The Vault or The Marriott in Pattaya, but I have stayed at The Bella Villa Prima, The Sunshine Residence, The Sabai Lodge, The Golden Crab, The Lord Nelson (Gawd, what a pit), The Sandy Spring, and this last trip The Residence Garden.

The Residence Garden is a far, far superior hotel to all the others on this list and I would highly recommend it. If you are going to spend most of your time on Walking Street with an occasional trip to Jomtien, it would be ideal.

However, over the years I've found I spend more and more time north of Soi 13. So, does anyone know of a hotel comparable to The Residence Garden on the north end of town?

i've slept with bargirls in their non-airconditioned apts with non-flush toilets and no hot water, 3 or 4 people in each bed, counting me (ok, that part was cool). it was an interesting experience, but now my attitude is "been there, done that, this is my vacation and i want luxury."

don't worry about what other people pay, just enjoy yourself.

  • 1 year later...
J

I mean... last year I stayed at Tycoon Place;

all new superclean place with lift, swimming pool, aircon room with all necessairy furnitures, big fridge, 60+channels cableTV, hot&cold shower, balcony with poolview. Restaurant, massage, hairdresser and minimart in reception area, daily roomcleaning, 24 hour security, nice quiet neighbourhood and yet no more than 15 minutes walk from Walking Street!

...and on top of that Free Internet access in my room and no joinersfee when you bring back girls!

Monthly cost 8500 baht, electric not included, (add another 1500-2000 baht for that).

For 85000 baht I could stay in a cheap hotel for 8-9 months! Lol!

got a few questions ...if you stayed in there suite that is

was there a sofa

and

was the bedroom separate from the living room

Air mattress on the beach? I dream about on air mattress on the beach.

I stay in a cardboard box in a sewer with 50 other blokes. We work 26 hours at the local mine, drink battery acid for breakfast, and ...... oh wait, is this where I go for an argument?

We were evicted from our cardboard box.... :D

Why the hell would you even care if the girl was impressed with the room? That's stupid.

Stay where you want to stay. It's your holiday and your money.

I've stayed at places that cost less than 1,000 baht, but I've also paid 5,000 for the Sheraton Pattaya in 2006. In the case of the latter, I stayed there because I wanted to enjoy the bed, pools, service, etc. In both cases, I didn't care about the girl's opinion.

I liked the Areca better than the Residence Garden, and it's right in the middle of town albeit a long block east of Second Road. Being on the far side of 2nd road (also a minus for the RG although there is less traffic down there) which is a pain to cross, and lack of wifi (even for-pay) are the only minuses for me!

Oh, it's all no-smoking which is a BIG +++ for me but obviously guys who like their tobacco would find it a ---.

If I had more money I would stay in the best, why not?

I have to go budget or I don't go, but I don't begrudge the best to those that can

afford it.

My hope (even now) is that some day I will be able to afford the high roller accomodations.

Until then I am in the less than 1000 baht per night places.

As long as we all enjoy ourselves who cares who stays where?

Stupid topic IMO.

Why pay more money to eat in nicer restaurants?

Given the choice and if possible i'd rather pay that bit extra and stay in somewhere nicer!

These overpay comments are bullshit IMO especially when its a guy whose saved up to have a holiday to remember and the surroundings he stays in are part of his memories of a good holiday.

Right and double right. Surely the real issue isn't how much you spend but what you get for your money.

If you're getting a good deal at any price then you aren't overpaying. Stand on me, my son. 2guns

I pay 450bht a night at the White Inn, same price all year round...

Suits me fine as I'm hardly ever there, and generally spend time in on around Walking Street or Jomiem so idealy located :D

Recommended too for those that are happy with the basics (Double Bed, TV/Cable, Fridge/Minibar, Seperate bathroom with shower and jet powered minge squirter, 24hr room service (food), laundry service, room cleaned everyday (if awake).... what more could a man ask for 2guns
