Guys and Girls,

 

I've heard alot of people mention that its better to change your currency up in Thailand as opposed to over here in the UK because the exchange rate is better?

 

Can anyone confirm or advise otherwise if the case may be? If it is better, do I just take my Sterling to Pattaya with me and change at a local exchange?

 

PS.... Im going tomorrow so early responses are more than welcome

Change your money when you get to Thailand.

 

There are two different excahnge rates in force - an internal one and an external one. The external rate which applies outside Thailand is poorer than the rate you will get once you arrive here.

As usual I left everything to the last minute so was panicking a bit

 

Are there any limits to what I can change up at a Bureau over in Thailand....

 

I am planning on taking £1000 cash and £500 Travellers Cheques for my 2 weeks. I suppose I can just change up as and when I need really? And also, does the Internal exchange rate apply at Bangkok airport as I will be literally going without any Baht in my pocket so to speak and would need to change it up ASAP for Taxi / Hotel etc ....

Hi, Just change enough at the airport for your taxi and immediate expenses. You will get a better rate in town and can compare rates

I have decided I am going to take a mixture of cash and travellers cheques, along with enough Baht to get me to the hotel etc and then change up from there....

 

Can anyone advise out of curiosity what the "Internal" rate is likely to be?

Dont even think about getting Baht in the UK!!!

 

Take a couple of hundred quid in Bank of England notes with you and change them at BKK airport.

The exchange rate will be around 68 Baht to the Pound! (in comparison to 62-ish in the UK!)

 

Open a Nationwide Account and stick your holiday money in there. No charge for withdrawals and

an even better rate than at the Bureau's. I have used my Nationwide ATM for a couple of years now and

its the bollocks! There was a wee rumour that they were going to start charging for withdrawals but I

checked and their not!

As you exit Customs on your right about 30 meters down, Siam Commercial Bank money changers ,I got £200 worth at 68.o8 to the pound. DO not change money in UK

Also... try not to exchange too much after about 1pm on a Friday afternoon cos the exchange rate is nearly always reduced and frozen until Monday to protect the currency over the weekend.

Youll be able to change £ to Baht anytime day or night at Suvarnabhumi

 

There are no limits (save that BKK based bank bureaux ask for sight of Passport on 20/30K Baht transactions). Pattaya in the more 'serious' exchanges (soi Rungland etc) chopping up sterling into 3 or 4 million baht will not raise an eyebrow.

I have always changed my sterling at bkk airport and usually got a good rate. Is this the case or will I get a better one in Pattaya?

Always found rate is a bit better in Pattaya. Just change enough for a joe and maybe a beer or two

Change your money in Pattaya. Don't change more than a minimum ($50, say) at the airport. Change cash at a money changer's, not the bank, for a better rate.

I always do as mentioned above, change a little at the airport bkk and change more as I go at the Siam Bank money changers around town, they are the purple colored ones.

 

There is one next to rgp on beach rd and also one close to soi diana on 2nd rd, always found they have about the best exchange rate to the aussie $.

 

Once my cash has ran out I just make withdrawals from the atm's.

soon as you land exchange just enough to get you where your going the rates at the airport aren't the best
