Airline rules - re flight length

Recommended Posts

I heard that if a flight is longer than 6.5 hours..that they need to give you more leg room. Is that correct? If so , then no more split flights.

Perhaps you better let BA know of what you've heard as they have one of the smallest seat pitches on the non stop LHR-BKK route 1luv 1luv

My experience has been that all coach seats need more leg room regardless of the flight length. But I know of no regulations stipulating minimum leg room.

Never heard of that, the UK regulations for Economy state a minimum pitch of 26 - 27 inches

http://www.uk-air.net/seatpitch.htm

BA for example have 31 inch for short haul and long haul flights in Economy

Thai is about the best for the Bangkok trip from the UK at (I believe) 34 inch pitch as against - say - Emirates at 32 inch.

Seatguru.com will give you plenty of info on what pitch most airlines give for each type of plane.

I have never flown long haul in economy but have flown short haul on Thomas Cook at 27 inch pitch and it was horrendous for a 3 hour flight.

11 days to wheels up for my 86 inch pitch

The airlines and the CAA have different definitions of seat pitch. The CAA 26" minimum translates into around 28-29" in airline speak.

I remember coming back from Bahrain on Gulf in 2002 and I swear to god I couldnt get in the seat. That must have been a 26-28 inch pitch

They had chartered some holiday motor and I spent the entire flight on the jump seat at the back bar take off and landing.

I doubt there is any law, such things need international agreements, more probable the longer flights is, the more important comfort is to the paying passenger and many will spend more for a few extra inches so what's the point of cramming all the seats in if you can not fill them.

Does it not also depend on what class you buy? I think Thai Air has a least 5 different class in Economy.

No-you can have as many class of ticket as you want in economy but you'll still be sat in the same seat pitch.

yes, that is what I mean. However I seem to recall reading somewhere that the further back you sit, the pitch is smaller. That might depend on airlines though and/or the length of the flight.

The window seat looks to be unoccupied. I guess his brother will be showing up to take that seat.

make you wonder if and how he managed to get the seat belt on.
Well they have these extension things for the big ones, but I am thinking this guy wouldn't be able to strap himself in safely.

He is a hazzard to his fellow passengers, if an incident occured you wouldn't be able to get round him, over him or past him to an emergency exit. I also doubt he would fit through the over-wing ones.!
