Whenever 4niceight bumps into me these days it always seems to be just after Rooney's played a blinder!

I think there's a little more to greatness than young Master Wayne has achieved so far. Heart, soul, selflessness, leadership, rising to a great moment (can you say "World Cup"?)... the list goes on and on. You don't have to get them all, but surely you have to get some??? Scoring some goals in club matches doesn't rate English greatness to me. That's not a putdown in any manner. This is a wonderfully talented player, but give him some time and opportunity to be great and see what he does with that opportunity. First *big* chance - South Africa. Let's be realistic and remember how many "great" players simply couldn't do anything once they got on foreign grass. Give Rooney a chance.

How much of this is spent sprinting?

He clocks up 9.70 metres per second. And that's not too far off the pace of a sprinter like Maurice Greene who weighs in at just over 10 m/s.

When Rooney first burst on the scene in an international tournament, whilst still in his teens, everyone was predicting that he would be the new white Pele - including Pele himself.

 

However, the 6 years since then have shown that although he will always remain a dangerous player, he will never joined the ranks of the exalted greats.

 

He has had 6 years! More than enough time between the ages of 18 - 24!

 

Given that he is a 'big boned' player who easily puts on weight then he is not likely to be the sort of player who will have two more world cups to look forward to after this one in order to show how 'great' he is.

International football is of a lower standard , due to limited choice of players. You never get a team with as many world class players in every position as you do in champions league football , or top half premiership teams. However, the flaws/ weaknesses in international teams, make it a good spectacle.
