Have you talked to a bar girl? Their English is poor at best. Understand, that even though they speak pigeon English, that does not mean that they can read and write English. If you go to most Thai used Internet cafe's, you will find someone there writing e-mails to sponsors of bar girls for a fee. Little do the bar girls know, that the person writing for them have poor English skills themselves. Often the e-mail makes no sense. They can probably read what what was sent to them with some degree of accuracy, provided, you understand to use pigeon English yourself.

How good is your Thai then? Are you dumb as dog shit because you cannot read and write Thai? Or German? Or Russian? Should Germans and Russians then think your as dumb as dog shit because you cant speak in their language?

 

Thai's have the same IQ average as every other race in the world. They are neither smarter nor dumber then any race. Many of them are MUCH better at language then most of the people on this forum, myself included. I speak and understand only a few words of Thai, and find it bloody impressive that they do so much better with 2 languages. That said, many Thai's are not educated, but there is a very large difference between intelligence and knowledge.

Another alternative is to use an online translator, although not always perfect, and sometimes you have to rethink alternative words to use, this one http://imtranslator.net/translation/ has a back translation so you can:-

(1) type in english

(2) automatically converts to thai

(3) it also re-translates the thai back to english, so you can check that its translated correctly.

 

I use it to e-mail my TGF all the time, and she has no problem with it.

 

Dont forget to use the drop down box to select English to Thai.

That may be the case, however, the average Pattaya/Bangkok bargirl will have had many more opportunities to practice her language skills and that's what matters. Unless they are working, or have been educated, in an English speaking environment, the "educated ladies" English skills are likely to be pretty poor.

Differences here between speaking and "on paper". I've known quite a few ejumacated Thais who can read and write with the best of us here, but can't speak English for beans - it's all book-learning and vocab lists and grammar. As you say, the Pattaya gals (for example) get lots of chance for immersion, and many can speak/understand quite well, but can't read/write for beans.

 

There are many other forces at work of course - foreign trips, movies (in Bangkok, almost exclusively in English), radio/TV and popular enterainment/songs among others.
