That is funny because I lived in Merida for a year and also spent 2 years in LaPaz and Cabo in Baja.Tastes vary by region but some of the comments about salsas here are amusing.I never stopped to eat in Hermosillo, just passed through,so I can't comment. The Yucatan area is a different ball game than the remainder of mainland Mexico, from people to taste preferences. But I have to agree somewhat with an earlier post that said you can generally judge a Mex restaurant by its chips and salsa. But in Mexico, prepare yourself for some seriously thick chips, which like.

Yeah I spent a good bit of time in Merida, and visited Hermasillo quite a few times, and other Mexican Cities.

Always like the country a lot.

My last posting there was around 9-11, and the world changed then and Mexico since.

I used to drive down from Phoenix and park in the USA and have a night in Nogales just to get the flavour again.

I have not been to Mike's Mexican for a few months. I have always enjoyed the food and ambiance of the place. The last order I had was a large burrito which was more than I could finish. Will be ba

Small world indeed. It is a beautiful city and having Progreso only 17 minutes away via the 8 lane, nearly empty, road is great.

Lots of folks do what you do and park the car on the secure US side and wander over and back.In fact, some folks do just that to get their entry docs and vehicles done and then just breeze through the following morning and avoid the long a.m. lines for entry.Sorry for the OT but it is nice to share common ground.

I DO like Mexican food though!

Real tabasco has to come from Tabasco, Mexico. I buy a case if I can when I go to Mexico. In between there is always the local Mercados to keep me supplied.

If someone is talking about "tabasco sauce", it's a 99.9 percent chance they are talking about this:

Never had any problems with mikes, been going there for years. Had a few with tequila reef though, some days spent in bathroom after tequila reef so now I only get the occasional guacamole from there as a snack if I'm passing through

Funny that but i really know nothing about authantic Mexican food but the Tequila Reef was not good enough to get me to eat there twice. I had better food in places that were just trying to be Mexican!

Anyone tried the new Mexican fastfood in Jomtien? Open 24 hours?

Sunrise Tacos? Tried the one in Bangkok with a fellow American, and we both found the food quality poor...neither of us finished our meals, and I doubt I'll ever go back.

I've heard similar reports about the one in Jomtien.

I have had the same experience with both Tequila reef, and Mike's. I like the food at Mikes better. The next day or two in the toilet happens more than in just Mexican places. I think it has more to do with the cooks, and refridgeration than the food itself. Knowing some restaurant owners, they have a hard time getting across to Thai's that they can't leave food out all day, and then cook it and serve it to a customer. The same goes for frozen food, that they will refreeze if it goes unsold. Getting Thai's to wash their hands before cooking after they have been to the toilet, picking their nose, or squeezing zits is almost a lost cause.

I ate there the other night at about 2.00 a.m. I wasn't very impressed. Had a pork quesadilla,

Kind of bland and flavorless, roughly the equivalent of the stuff you get at Taco Bell. I won't be rushing back, but if I'm hungry late at night, am passing by and there's nowhere else close to get better food at that time, I might eat there again. It's the way I feel about Taco Bell or McDonalds. Not my first, second or third choice, but also not a place to be avoided at all costs.

I put in Habanero sauce

If you're able to get Dos Equis beer you might as well get real Mexican, like a Carné Asada burrito or some rolled tacos in guacamole.

They might as well, since there are more Mexicans in America than there are in Mexico, but to be more realistic they do use other brands, mostly El Yucateco with either Japapeno or Habanero chillies

The Mexicans use American hot sauce?

Has the jury returned a verdict?

So say you one and so say you all?

Blue Parrot uneatable? Granted, the place wouldn't last long in San Diego, but for Pattaya, it's OK. One plus: I've never gotten sick from eating the food there.

I ate at Blue Parrot once. I have never been back. I found the food to be greasey and barely fit for human consumption. On a positive note about the place, I think the Blue Parrot has the best salsa in Pattaya.

Last time I ate I Mike's, within 2 hours I was violently ill. Since I had both salsa, and a chimichanga covered in tomatoes, I am sure it was from that. Tried 1000mg of Cipro to no avail. Finally ended up in the clinic getting an IV of antibiotics, but still felt bad an entire day more. Never again.

The food isn't even worthy of the name Tex Mex..

Both friends insist that Mike's is better than Tequila Reef. As far as my food, I found it pretty bland.

I went to Mikes. What a huge disappointment. Small portains and very bland. Two friends I was with agreed and I/we don't plan to return.

I love the "never gotten sick" as an accolade.

What most of us think of as Mexican food is Tex-Mex. A Mexican-American from the border area will have a hard time finding old home cooking in the interior. For that matter, it varies from one area to another along the border.
