Nothing wrong with any of that. What screams US of A tacky are the hand carved walking sticks and the ice tea jar strapped around momma's fat neck.

"The barbershop quartet will be singin' down at the Baptist Church." Has to be America. :banghead

But what part of "America" ? Canada,Mexico, U.S.?

The plural form "Americas" refers to North, Central and South America, that is everything from Northern Canada and Greenland down to the tip of Argentina and Chile. It can also include the various islands nearby: Cuba, the Caribbean, the Faulklands, the Bahamas, etc.

The singular form "America" is usually a shorthand reference to "the United States of America".

I've never heard anyone from Canada or Mexico say they are from "America", though they might say they are from "North America" or "the America s ".

It certainly looks like Mr and Mrs D getting in line early for the buffet. :devil

That guy is too fit to be BigD. :clap1 Also, BigD would have the OJ bottle strapped to his waist to avoid buying costly beverages onsite.

I'm all for it. I always thought it was unfair that those of us in the US grabbed "America" for ourselves. Canadians, Mexicans, South and Central Americans all have just as much right to use it.

I'd like to stop telling people I'm from America. Unfortunately many Thais get a confused look when I tell them "I'm from the United States", or the shorter "I'm from the US". :allright They seem to enjoy saying, "Ameh-eeka". I suppose we can thank "West Side Story" for that.

You couldn't if you wanted to. The world decided people of the US were Americans. If not, they wouldn't be no matter how much the people of the US tried to grab it. Everyone calls them Americans, and generally calls the US "America". There's North and South America, there's Central America, there's the United Mexican States, there are all kinds of Adjective Americans. Everyone is agreed on that, and in pretty well every language that matters, too - not JUST Thai but including Thai.

The Thai for "United States" is not "United States" or "US", that's the English. Thais say "Saha Rath" and they understand fine that it is the US. If you say I am from Saha Rath, that's a perfect alternative to I am from America. They understand both, just like most people in the world.

Canadians, Mexicans, South and Central Americans all have just as much right to use it.

But in the main they didn't want it. There was (is) that "norte americano" thing but that is pure irony. "Norte americano" is ALSO just for people of the US, and not Mexicans and not Canadians. For that matter, so is gringo only for Americans.

As a side note, though, "America" is a (fairly) popular girl's name for Hispanics.

No problem wearing white socks with sneakers - it's socks of any color with sandals that is the big fashion boo-boo, regardless of whether the guy has shorts or long trousers.

Evil

While I agree socks and sandals doesn't look great, if the choice is cold vs socks, I tend to go the socks when I've had to make the choice.

I think that may just be a fashion mistake in the U.S. Many Europeans think it is fine and also Thai people think it is clean and smart looking as long as it is not knee socks. Ugly, dirty, deformed feet should be made to be covered in socks in my opinion. And loafers without socks makes feet sweat and smell god awful.

I lived in Mexico several years and gringo was everyone white that didn't speak spanish. norte americano was anyone north of the border including the many Canadians living there. The world didn't decide the U.S. were americans. Being born on the continent decided it just like Canadians,Mexicans, etc.
