Heathrow Duty Free or Doha?

Recommended Posts

From my experience buying perfume (not for me or a ladyboy for all the smart asses lol) I found that perfume I had bought in Dubai or infact abu dabi was cheaper in Manchester or LHR on the way home! All depends whats on offer.

In almost all cases, if you buy a bottle of perfume (or booze or after-shave or water) and then land and then board or reboard a plane, you will lose the bottle of (whatever) to the jack-booted security goons.

In other words, it's almost impossible to get a bottle of (something) from Heathrow to Bangkok. It has become a matter of what is possible, not what is the best deal.

I think you need corrected on this one! definately the booze will be confiscated as for the perfume your answer is wrong unless its over 100ml.

Jeez. You would actually troll the duty free shops for 2 ounces of perfume and NOTHING else but that? Jeez.

But yes, you are correct, Cheep Charles and his up-to 3 oz TOTAL of perfume and all other liquids can skate through security so long as there is nothing else, quite right.

I didn't find Doha to be too strict on things like that, but the comment regarding prices does apply, it is quite expensive.

Plenty of non stop flights from LHR to BKK, so hardly impossible, not even close to almost.

Without quibbling about "plenty" and percentages of all flights, you're quite right - not at all impossible. If you're on a non-stop, you can buy a couple or six proper sized non-cheap charlie perfumes and get them to Thailand for sure.

I checked, all flights out of Heathrow are non-stop to one place or another.

Mid-flight stops have been abolished to reduce fuel wastage.

To bump the thread then...

Would it be better to buy in Bangkok Airport? on arrival, have never checked the prices there.

Paul

P.S. Thanks for the replies so far...

He's non-stop to Doha, then non-stop to LOS. So he has to change planes in Doha and the booze may be confiscated. Non-stop and direct are 2 different things - I found that one out the hard way. :banghead

I'd agree with buying perfume in Doha though.

This is actually a pretty good choice for a lot of stuff, and it's normally what I do. I don't two-bit price-shopping, frankly (or buy two ounces of perfume for my gifts) so I can only say that the prices here are okay.

Two things: The ciggies are all what is on the local market, i.e. the UK ones are mostly from Malaysia, the US ones from the Philippines. So I would never buy those.

Also, they will (generally, although anything is ultimately negotiable in Thailand) but generally only let you buy in quantities that meet Thai law for duty-free, such as ONE bottle of booze, ONE carton of smokes, etc. That said, I've bought three, four bottles of perfume and waltzed through, which I think is over the limit. So your mileage WILL vary on this point.

I flew through Doha last year and although there is little in the way of refreshments the selection of aftershaves and perfumes is extensive. All at very good duty free prices. I would recommend buying in Doha and cutting out any delays when you arrive in BK.

I agree Alex

I fly with Qatar & have never had a problem arriving in BK with a few B&H ciggies & some aftershaves after a Doha transit !

Some of the cheapest prices around.

If you have access to the Silver lounge at Doha & their facilities you will appreciate the extra comfort (private showers etc)

hope to experience it again very soon !

cheers Rogero :banghead :banghead :grin

Yes do that. I often purchase on arrival at Bangkok, usually because I have been horrified by prices in Manchester, then found out that they are more in Doha, then obliged to buy in Bangkok. Can't even get the rolling baccy in Bangkok for the other way now, and all the ciggies are covered in vile pictures.

A resource comparing duty free prices would be useful....

I will help any that may not know the difference.Non-stop means non-stop.Direct means one or more stops on the same aircraft.

I came through Doha early this morning but didn't buy but when I reached BKK I bought a bottle of perfume and a bottle of aftershave, not a massive saving but BKK was around 15 US cheaper. Don't know about Heathrow.

Direct means a through flight on the same flight number, not necessarily on the same aircraft.

UA837/838 from DFW to BKK is a prime example. Change of aircraft is required in SFO in both directions. Much the same for UA881/882 from BOS to ICN which requires a change of aircraft in ORD.

Yes,there is the occasional exception, but by far,and I mean in the upper 90s percentile,it means the same aircraft, especially on domestic flights. So continue,as usual,to knit pick away google Tom.It's what you're known best for.

Just helping out those that don't know the difference. A direct flight is determined by the flight number, not the aircraft. It doesn't matter if it has zero, one or two stops. Conversely, a connecting flight will have different flight numbers and could be on the same aircraft, particularly when connecting through, for example, the middle eastern hubs. Besides, in the context of this thread, all direct flights between London Heathrow and Bangkok are non-stop.

Leave out the personal stuff. :chogdee

That is the way to go, buy coming into Bangkok.

Doha looked expensive to me and there is always currency changing expense.

As to Heathrow, well apparently T5 is pretty expensive, more than say 3.

Hi,

Will be transiting Doha on Monday and wonder which is best for Duty FREE (It will be early in the morning) Aftershave etc.

Thanks

I've purchased perfume off of street vendors in Pattaya. My daughter who uses a lot of different perfumes. She thinks the knock offs are a great buy.
