Pattaya October Storm Watch - Gaemi coming

Recommended Posts

There was a serious storm last night that overwhelmed the drainage systems all over Pattaya...Walking Street got some flooding, as did other areas that are ususally prone to flooding.

I have pics and videos from Walking Street, but I didn't venture far because I didn't want to get wet. If you have any other areas you got photos or video of, please post them in this thread.

I was on beach road, at soi8, which was badly flooded. Headed home up Klang, which was blocked with water so detoured via second road and thru New Plaza. Soi Buakaow was underwater,as usual so decided to leave the bike and wade home. Lots of bikes getting stuck in the deep water (over my knees) and didnt want to chance damage to a new bikes engine.

went back early this morning to pick it up.

The Thai weather bureau has had warnings out for over a week - and they're usually pretty accurate as we depend on them every day.

As of 7am (Thai time Saturday) the now "tropical storm" had still not reached the Eastern seaboard and you can expect more over the next 48 hours. If going out tonight an inflatable raft and life-jacket may be in order.

Most boats at Bali Hai Pier are heading out for quiet waters tonight as we are expecting 2-3m waves in the upper Gulf. Tomorrow is NOT a good day to be on the water and if you have any sense DONT go anywhere near one of the Koh Larn ferries. They're unsafe in good weather!!!

Cheers :gulp: Admiral Ken

Yes, lots of bikes got water damage when parked on some of the more flooded roads. The baht busses rolled by, throwing up wakes, and then bikes just fell over into the water.

On the same topic, here is a video taken just as the storm was starting...maybe 20 minutes into it, and the rain was quite heavy. If you saw the video in post #1, you'll see the rain had let up, but the flooding was getting worse, due to the runoff from inland moving to the seaside areas (Walking St and Beach Road).

I've heard on the Thai news, and a weather site, that the tropical storm is just reaching the eastern coast of Vietnam today, and should arrive in Thailand's eastern regions on Monday.

So, more to come.

For anyone who can read a synoptic chart this is the place to go.

http://www.tmd.go.th/en/weather_map.php

We find that they're about 80% right with their predictions and with looking at the actual charts and radar images available on the site we can improve that slightly as we can localise the information for our specific requirements. Just remember that the terminology is for people having some familiarity with meteorological terms so eg 85% rain DOES NOT mean it will rain for 85% of the day.

MM,how many times have we seen,"There was a serious storm last night that overwhelmed the drainage systems all over Pattaya"?

It just amazes me that storm drainage is an afterthought.Even the drains in place are covered for various reasons, some by wood to make it easier to ride your scooter over or to keep the odor to a minimum.Or are full of debris that is rarely removed.I suppose it will only get worse though.Good video.

In my 18 months there,I have sat in restaurants and watched the water quickly rise to cover 75% of scooters along 2nd Rd.I'm sure it's just as bad in other locations.I remember the WS video you posted a few years ago with the flood and the gusher coming down from 2nd Rd.

How much did it affect FLB this time-hopefully not as bad as last time?

The storm last night and tonight did not manage to jump the curb and flood the bars on Walking Street as they did last year in September.

Then again, the main storm hasn't arrived yet.

Tonight was quite mild, BTW.

What's he outlook for tonight? I'm beginning to get cabin fever but I sure the hell don't want to face trying to get back to Jomtien after rain and flooding like on Sept. 11 last year. Took me four hours just to get from WS to Tuk.com.

I was caught in last Septembers storm. I was in second road and of course the baht buses would not stop.Bugger me but then i stepped off the pavement and my foot got trapped in a hole that was well under water. I went for a fall and ended up ripping the knee of my good trousers.I got some of that crap in my mouth and up my nose and my knee was bleeding, but survived.

The one thing that upset me most was that I was carrying my barfine from the X Zone at the time and she was less than entranced! :bhappy

I had no way to get home other than walk...motorbikes couldn't get thru the flooded area at 2nd Road and Thappraya Road, and baht busses were all taken. I slogged home in thigh deep dirty water against a strong current (the water was flowing to the sea). It took 2 hours to go a distance that I normally can cover in 15 minutes.

I do hope it doesn't get that bad this time, but there's no way to know for sure. I think if it starts flooding, I'll try to get home before the water rises too high.

That same night there was 4 inches of water INSIDE the Oasis Gogo bar. But the girls carried on dancing on the stage and the waitresses splashed around still serving drinks. If that happened in Falangland especially the UK, assorted jobsworths from Health and Safety, the local council and the Fire Brigade would be round with their chests all puffed out and close the place down for a month while the insurance wallahs 'evaluated the damage'.

Looking at all the videos on YouTube, I guess it would be a good idea to live above the first floor, if you lived in Pattaya. Stock up ob some food and water and if it floods, stay inside. It's surprising, though, how fast it can all happen. One time I was out taking some pictures on Beach Road when it got dark and started to rain. I had to take refuge in a Soi 8 beer bar, within a short time, Soi 8 turned into a river.

It really is. I was in FLB Friday night talking with BM, losgrad. I was ribbing him about always carrying an umbrella, since the weather when I entered FLB 20 minutes before was clear and dry. He was telling me that he liked to be "always prepared". This was as he was leaving. Just as he hit the front door, I heard a rumbling sound from the ceiling and realized it was the sound of heavy rain. I went towards the front, and losgrad was coming back with a big grin on his face. It can happen without much warning, indeed.

Here are some pictures given to me by a BM who was in the Soi Diana, Soi LK Metro area Friday night during the big storm. As usual, Soi Diana is a lake.

I travelled to the airport late Sunday nite and it rained all the way there, not too heavy but a good down pour. Leaving over Bangkok and out towards Myanmar we hit some real nasty turbulance and everyone was silent including the stewards for a good while until we cleared the clouds after about 20 minutes
