Tukcom scam - pay attention

Recommended Posts

I've been conned a few times in Tukcom so i thought i was aware but got caught out again yesterday.

Wanted a 3d blu-ray disc and the genuine ones are expensive @ 1,500 bahts. So i tried one from the 4th floor Tukcom. Obviously copies but maybe OK. The packaging looked good, clear printing and at 500 baht was at the top end of prices. It was meant to be a Scorpions concert and the blu-ray disc had a photo of the Scorpions clearly printed on the disc. When i got home though and tried it it was another fucking group - Glee, never heard of them.

Luckily i live close to Tukcom and went back to get a refund. But if you are a visitor you could be stuck with expensive dud.

So check everything you buy at Tukcom.

dont think you will get much sympathy. You sought to circumvent copyright laws and engage in technically criminal behaviour, Now your whining you got conned.Thats what happens when you deal outside the law.

What do you want to do- use the same laws you flouted to get a refund? Bit rich is'nt it?

Why you guys can't stop to use the word "scam" nowadays? For me that's not a scam, just a mistake. For them the price of a Scorpions' disk is the same than a Glee's one. They just have some many different ones, so many references,...

Happen to me once for a movie. Just returned it and they changed, no problem. If you are a tourist, best option is to ask them to check/look the disk while in the shop, this way you can check it's the good movie and that you have the good language/subtitle too. I had some surprises already with movies in Chinese ;)

So for you if the packaging misrepresents the contents, it is simply a mistake? As you say common-place, I have certainly bought a DVD where the packaging suggested a particular film I wanted to see, but the contents were something different.

I have also had DVDs that were un-watcheable, being such poor copies or poor audio quality. In my mind, not fit for the purpose sold.

Sure, Pattaya and pirate products it is a case of buyer beware..... but sounds like a scam to me.

I just opened a can with a picture of sardines on it, and there was a dead rat in there.... probably a mistake.

A 'mistake' not a 'scam'..........A scam would be a Scorpions concert of 100 baht quality sold at 500 baht. Very few Scorpions fans would fail to note the difference between their much beloved group and 'Glee'.

Idefix is correct in my opinion and I was about to say as much before I saw he'd beaten me to the punch.

However, the OP is right about checking for a 'mistake' before you leave....especially if you're on holiday.

Yes, in the present context: For obvious reasons these "no official disks" are not in the pakages you look at. Most of time when you ask for one DVD they look at the title or a reference # on the package and send someone "somewhere" get the corresponding disk. No surprise for me that with this process some mistakes can happen.

My answer would of course be No if it was about official (and more expensive) disks...

To take part in this discussion. This is not a scam it is an illegal business. That being said it is a business and I have never known the businss owners to not take care of their complaints. I wish some other businesses would stand behind their products as well as the pirate movie dealers. For argument sake, it would be a scam if they were selling the movies as originals not copies. They actually like to brag about how good their copies are. The OP's advice for tourists to make sure what they are getting is good advice. My only disagreement is this is not a scam.

Now for more important information....Less than a month to go!!!! I am looking forward to being harrassed by tailors, drink sluts, vendors, and generally having a blast. See you all soon

What world do you live in ?

sorry if you too thick to realise it but let me spell it out slowly for you.

your dealing in illegal goods- acknowledged by all.

You cannot expect a benefit{cheap price} by acting outside the law and then expect a benefit by using the law- the goods are as described.

As idefix suggested- if your going to deal in these goods pull them out and check them, in this case get the dvd played infront of you.

I dont see it as a scam or a mistake, it goes with the territory.

This is a very interesting response.

I think you may want to look in Kohlberg's Moral Development theory, or maybe read some of the communist moral theory writers. Try Kohlberg first.

The man was trying to purchase a Scorpion movie. Legally very tenuous to suggest he is knowingly breaking the law.

If I was the presiding judge I would dismiss the copyright infringement and dealing in stolen goods charges as the OP just wanted to amuse himself. ;)

But I would place him under house arrest with weekly check ins to the local police and maybe even a electronic bracelet for 18 months for wanting to buy the Scorpion movie. Bad taste must be punished.

What world do you live in ?

That question is out of order.

If he visits Pattaya he obviously lives in Fantasy Land. ;)

If you buy DVDs here to take back home to the states or europe, how do you deal with the regional encoding thing on dvd players?

They are ususally region 0 being rips so the region coding is not likely to matter but since they are for the Thai market they are PAL which is a different video standard than North America (NTSC).

I have a DVD player that is multi-region and it converts PAL to NTSC as it plays, it so I am covered. If your TV is a flat screen it may (probably will) play PAL so you just need a region free PAL player and they are quite cheap at Tukcom.

As for the original topic, the DVD music guy at the top of the escalator is a nice guy and you can quickly scan the DVDs and if they are not labelled right he gives you your cash or finds another one so it hardly a scam. He has 2000 titles, I doubt he personally made any of them and he certainly has not watched them all for you as you can imagine.

Scam is hardly the word for a simple mistake. And yes I got one mislabeled including the silkscreen on the DVD and he replaced it.

Just as bad is the generally shitty quality of a lot of DVDs that won't play properly even if they are labelled properly. Again the vendor near the music DVD guy (the one that offers 6 for 5) will let you have a look or swap them if defective. Just make sure it goes chapter chapter, chapter with the remote. The ones that are dodgy hang up pretty quick on the section that is written badly.

And at the end of the day $3 is not going to kill anyone (nor turn merchants into "scammers").

If someone wants to sell something at a discounted price, that is their 'business'....

Misrepresenting the item they are selling is scamming.

When Tesco sells me cans of beer on special, or perhaps as a loss leader, I do expect the cans to have beer in them. If they were full of piss I wouldn't say 'it was to be expected as they were too cheap'..... what nonsense.

Some of the 'wine' I've bought over here I've been amazed at how they get the cat's to sit on the bottle.

You have no concept of a production line.........

Numerous bottles with funnels in them are kept under cages of wild cats, who are shown pictures of BigD and given Pattaya lager to drink.

You have obviously never been to Wall Street or anywhere in corporate America. They do this all day everyday.

I just found out I'm PRECONVENTIONAL stage 2........on the Kohlberg thingy.

Hi atlas2.

I suspected as much.

I think people aim to make or save money. That is not a crime punishable by shooting squad, I beleive.

But, then again, I also believe most people are stupid. I think the death penalty should apply for that.

But I like to drink, so I am a hypocrite.

I still think Scorpion is worth 18months behind bars though.
