Wow, the Dusit has really stood the test of time as their meeting place. I think that's where they were doing it back in 1995.

Embassy staff won't ever slum it at Crazy Daves.

At least not while they are on the clock.

For those using US Embassy outreach services, just got the following email. Love the bureaucracy and the hoops we have to jump through to comply.

Please be advised the U.S. embassy will no longer accept cash (U.S. Dollars and Thai Baht) at Outreach Events for American Citizen Services. This is a worldwide policy, and no exceptions can be considered.

All future payments at U.S. Embassy Outreach Events must be made in the form of a BANK DRAFT

· Purchased from Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn Bank, or Siam Commercial Bank (SCB).

o You do not need an account at the bank to purchase a bank draft.

· Purchased in advance.

· Made out to the “American Embassy Bangkok.”

· In the exact amount of Thai Baht (THB) for your total service.

· At the official embassy exchange rate at the time of the outreach.

o Fees and exchange rates will be included in individual outreach announcements and posted on our website.

· Submitted at the time of service. Please be advised the U.S. embassy will no longer accept cash (U.S. Dollars and Thai Baht) at Outreach Events for American Citizen Services. This is a worldwide policy, and no exceptions can be considered.

Interesting, My $50 Federal Reserve Note "LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE" is not accepted by the US Government.

More than likely the American Embassy is afraid of getting too many counterfeit dollars or just as likely real dollars are switched for fake dollars on the way to a bank.

No problem accepting cash in Bangkok. All the emails say it's worldwide. I can imagine it would be a bit risky to be traveling with thousands in cash in some parts of the world. For that matter, I suspect it could be a bit awkward for the trips further out of Bangkok such as Udon Thani Phuket. But, yes, it is pain in the butt.

Well I got my bank draft from Kasikorn on Beach Rd Jomtien yesterday (Thursday). I went in around 4PM expecting a hard time communicating what I wanted. No Problem, there had been many Americans in that day asking for a bank draft. In fact, they asked me why so many. I explained US Embassy no want dollars, only Thai check. Not to bad at 20 baht a pop, did have to have my passprt though.

Word of warning when getting the bank draft, make sure it's a bank draft and not a cashier's check. Heard today a few showed up at the embassy outreach with a cashier's check and were sent away to get a bank draft. No idea why it should matter.

Says a lot about the State Department's accounting and management of income. I mean, who in the world uses bank drafts only these days?

I can see them not taking BitCoin, but really do they trust their users so little that they need an instrument like a bank draft?

Sigh. IMHO they are showing themselves to be more primitive that Thailand. Big surprise given 8 hears of Demo appointments :P

Some wag on another board indicated that they don't trust their employees around cash all over the world. I wouldn't want to second guess those in charge.
