Majic Jack for Android

Recommended Posts

Not sure where to put this but since it might be useful for expats I'll try here.

Just now installed the Majic Jack App from Google Play. Without putting any money into it I'm able to make and receive calls across state lines.

Could someone try this in Thailand and try calling the US?

I ran the test using only Wifi enabled on the phone.

Here's what they say for an iPhone App and it should be the same for Android. It seems you can make the calls without a Magic Jack account but only receive with one which would be easy enough so you can e-mail to arrange a time you will call someone.

Skype is very cheap but not free to North America so this might be good in Thailand and the cost is hard to beat, e.g. free, to try it on Android or iPhone.

magicJack APP details:

FREE Calls to U.S. and Canadian phone numbers – or to any magicJack number, anywhere in the world.

magicJack APP will NEVER use your mobile minutes and does not require a voice plan. WiFi or 4G recommended.

magicJack APP is 100% FREE and does not require any purchase.

You can use your iPhone’s stored contacts with the magicJack APP.

Download magicJack APP today and start making FREE calls instantly.

IMPORTANT: NEW USERS

If you do not have a magicJack account, you have two options with magicJack APP:

1. Test drive it! No account needed. Make outgoing calls to U.S. and Canadian landlines and cell numbers and any magicJack number.

OR…

2. Receive a free magicNumber phone number to make and receive FREE calls and receive FREE Voicemail.

A magicNumber starts and ends with an asterisk/star, like so: *0123456777* and can be dialed directly from any magicJack.

You can use this number for magicJack to magicJack calls or have others call you from anywhere, like so:

• First dialing the access number:

1-305-848-TALK (1-305-848-8255).

• After the prompt, enter the magicNumber

including the asterisks/stars, like so: *01234567*

In magicJack APP, click the Account tab at any time to view your magicNumber.

Tell friends to download magicJack APP and dial each other direct for free.

**********WARNING

If you disable Apple notifications, you will NOT receive incoming calls.

On your Apple device, choose Apple's "Settings" and set "Notifications" to "ON". Then scroll down and set "magicJack" to "ON".

EXISTING CUSTOMERS

If you sign in to magicJack APP with an active U.S. or Canadian phone number on your magicJack account, you may use it to make and receive calls with magicJack APP. You can use the same number on all your magicJack services and devices.

I always bring my Magicjack to thailand. Plug it into my USB port on the computer and make and receive calls just like I am back in Virginia in the USA. I do bring a cheap small phone with me which I use with the Magicjack. Paid about $10. for it in a drugstore.

Works fine for calls back to the USA and for receiving calls from the USA.

I am firmly of the belief you don't get something for nothing. How are Magic Jack making their money? (Maybe funded by the NSA :D :D )

I think there's a small charge, per year. Here in the States, they advertise on TV, indicating that the cost is $19.95 per year.

I use gMail to make all my calls when at home, but use Magic Jack on my Android phone when out and about if I'm at a Wi-Fi location.

I would also like to know if either work to make calls back to North America from Thailand.

I do the same. An advantage is when you make a call it shows as a US based call. Whatever area code you choose. If someone calls your US based number you can pick up the phone and answer it like you are back in the USA.

If you purchase a Magic Jack it is much easier to set it up while still in the US. They check your IP address.

I think it will work, so long as long as you set it all up, initially, with a US address. One time I was at breakfast and the guy next to me was talking to someone from Las Vegas via Magic Jack and his laptop. I guess that was before they had apps for the smart phones. Still, if it worked then it should work now.

I use GMail (technically Google Voice) to make voice calls from my computer in Thailand to the US. One note, however, is that you cannot call Vonage numbers. On the calling end, it just sounds as though it is ringing, but the call never goes through. This is because Vonage basically blocks Google Voice calls. I suspect it is because they are competitors.

I may as well put in a warning here as well. If you use Google Voice to make international calls from your phone in the States, it works just fine. It also works just fine from Thailand. However, the way Google Voice works is that from your phone it will call to nearest Google Voice access number, then from there it is VoIP. This means if you have unlimited minutes in the States, you won't notice anything and it's 3 cents per minute to Thailand. HOWEVER, and this is the warning, if you call from Thailand to the US, what will happen is your Thai SIM will then dial a US access number incurring international rates on your Thai carrier, THEN it goes to VoIP to your final US destination for free.
