Before you rent that PCX

Recommended Posts

You should be aware that many (very many!) of the motorbike parking lots are charging from excess fees to park a PCX (or any "large" bike).

The normal bike charge around Marine and Walking Street area runs about 30baht.

Parking a PCX, depending on the parking lot, will cost between 50 and 100 baht.

For 6 years, I parked my motorbike in front of the Marine Hotel on Marine Plaza virtually every night. I had a Yamaha Nuovo, and I was charged 20 baht until a couple of years ago when they raised the rate to 30 baht.

After I bought the PCX, I brought it in the first night, and the guy, for whom I had generated over 50K worth of parking fees over the years, came to me and held his hand out. I gave him 30 baht. He said, "100 baht!".

He's never seen me park there again.

BTW, I paid 100 baht to park a goddamned car at the same parking area, same guy.

So, that extra 2 or 3 inches in width..probably 10% increase over a Yamaha Nuovo (just swagging the numbers here), justifies a tripling of the price. In what Bizarro World does that make sense?

Most of us commoners think it would be worth a few baht for a bit more width!

You might not if the ladies charged you more to park your steed there.

I'll have to see if I can get a discount when I rent mine !!

Mind you, I've never parked anywhere that I've had to pay, more by luck than judgement!

Now I don't either, except next to Secrets. Those guys still (last I dared use them) charge 20 baht...but the problem is if you get there late, you have to use the upper level, which is quite a challenge to get to and find a slot on an unwieldy PCX.

Mostly now, when going to WS, I park on 2nd Road..there's usually something available, and it's well traveled, so chances of theft are reduced.

Used to park my Harley for 100bht at Marine.

Always gave 40 bht on the Airblade and on some occasions I'd park free.

The original Guy passed away unfortunately, the kid there is OK but under orders.

A PCX is 20k up from a standard moped so maybe that's why?

You park at your own risk.

Where I parked, just in front of Marine Disco (Marine 2?), there was a guy who always wore a blue uniform until a few years ago..is he the one who died? He was a very serious, but conscientious guy. I got him to smile one time in about 4 years..it made my day.

The lot was taken over by a rummy (drunk) old guy who is basically a lazy grump. There's s kid there who helps out.

Same place?

It may be just a farang tax. They know MM can afford the extra charge. I'd bet the Thais who have a PCX maybe pay a little more but not 5 times more. This is just another good reason to take the baht buses.

No it isn't a good reason to take the baht bus...especially since they don't run from where I live.

Regarding the farang tax thing..I'll have a Thai person drive the bike in there sometime and see what they get charged...nice experiment. I'll get back to you on that. I think that explanation is bullshit, but we'll see.

I understand the logic behind it, the pcx being a tad wider could result in a few less smaller bikes able to park when they fill up. But you're talking probably the extra width of at least 5 pcx's to make up for one smaller bike like a ksr or msx. Basically B.S.

Interested to see how MM's experiment comes out!

Make me think about the bikes parked all the length of Soi 14: there are now often in double or triple parking rows! Guys who manage the bikes' park at the big hotel near WS may have a problem sooner or later. Police already reminded them that Soi 14 is a "security access to WS for ambulances and firemen" and then must never be obstructed...

You don't pay proportionally to the size of your bike ;) . There are just "small bike" and "big bike", there is a separation between small & big, and PCX fall just over the limit. Its higher price may have "helped" to put it in the "big bikes" class. Already saw discussions about that with 20 baht for scooters but 40 for PCX. True that the PCX is not that big, but it looks bigger than it is.

And this is the reason I made the OP...to let people know that the PCX is frequently put in the "big" bike category...right up there with Harleys and Honda Gold Wings.

I've seen the new Ducati shop in central Pattaya...after paying for one of those, I'd not complain about a surtax for parking...because it's justified.

Idefix... i think your post kind of contradicts itself. You have stated that a pcx is classed as a bigger bike therefore subject to a more expensive fee for parking. That means you are paying more for a bigger bike to park which is proportionate to its size! ksr 20 baht, pcx 40 baht, harley or goldwing 100 baht

I was just stating what the logic may be behind it from a business stand point. I have a pcx 150 but never do paid parking in the tourist traps

@cbrib: for me the definition of "proportional" means that if a PCX is only 10% "bigger" than a Nuovo, then you should pay only 10% more on the price, by example 33 baht if you pay 30 baht for a Nuovo. Here it's a price by steps, and PCX is just at the beginning of the upper steps, the worse case.

But ok, I don't want play on/with words. The important thing is what MM said:

Be prepared to pay more for park if you rent a PCX.

You're expecting Logic in Thailand? Good luck with that. !!

When I lived in Jomtien, I used to park my bike at one of my favorite bars and take a baht bus into Pattaya. Trying to park in Pattaya was just too much of a hassle.

As a slight aside, but somewhat relative to the 'size' of the PCX MM (and other PCX owners), how do you feel wrt worming your way to the front at the lights. I squeeze through on my Nuovo, but anything bigger.... nope.

jacko, I've seldom found any squeeze that a smaller bike can get thru that I can't get thru on the PCX.

Not being able to squeeze ahead can really piss off the other riders behind me, so I'm highly motivated to work out the angles of approach. I might have to duck walk it, rather than use the engine, but I will get thru!

One possible problem with the PCX is that the wide side mirrors (love 'em!!) on the PCX match perfectly with the mirror height of baht busses, so a little strategic leaning is sometimes required.

I'm with MM on this, Jacko. I rarely have a problem with the size when filtering. You tend to adapt to whatever size of bike you're riding at the time.

Surprised me slightly, as when I see a PCX they appear so much wider than my bike..... and yes MM I can appreciate the rising anger stuck behind someone who won't squeeze through when the 95 degree sunshine is beating down on your helmet. It seems harder when there is a lot of Krung Thep traffic in town as they seem to pack it tight.

I used to rent Yamaha Nuovo and moved to a PCX for three years now. Initially it seemed bigger but after a while you get used to it and no problems getting through normal traffic at the lights. Some times when things are really tight (weekends mostly with too many cars) it can be hard for all bikes and not just a PCX. I like the additional comfort of the PCX and would not go back to small bikes especially if riding on Sukhimvit or East Pattaya where you go at higher speeds.

Regarding parking, at Central Festival the "big bike" parking area at the entrance is mostly PCS bikes along with some larger ones. Parking is free and for those who don't mind a baht bus trip you can just park there and commute down to Walking Street. Security is good and also protected from rain or the hot sun if daytime. Royal Garden charges 10 baht an hour to park if you are not going to be a long time. I do like underground and secure parking as no worries.
