It's Coming! -- License Suspension

Recommended Posts

I had posted a question earlier, asking if there is some sort of point system for traffic violations in Thailand.

Well, the following may or may not be based on points, but Thailand is planning to suspend driving licenses for repeat offences. I won't be surprised if insurance companies jump on it and raise premiums as a consequence.

From the Bangkok Post:

Bad drivers face losing licence Published: 25 Jun 2014 at 13.24

Motorists who repeatedly break traffic laws may soon see their driving licences suspended for up to 90 days, or even cancelled. Licence suspension is a new measure to be used over the next 1-2 months...
Licence suspension is a new measure to be used over the next 1-2 months by the Land Transport Department in conjunction with fines to reduce road accidents, Matichon Online quoted director general Asdsathai...

"At present, if you run a red light and are caught on camera or stopped by the police, you pay a fine. Soon, if you break the law the second time, your driving licence may be suspended for 30 days," he said.

"For third-time offence, the licence will be frozen for 60-90 days. A fourth-time offender in one year may see his licence revoked," he added.

It wont make the slightest bit of difference. They ban Somchai and he will still drive.

Well you might think so if you also consider the new stricter driving test.

Although I am with Bigmick on this one.

One good idea would be to cancel the licence completely and tell Somchai to retake his driving test.

Exactly!!! Stupid fucks don't obey the traffic "suggestions" as it is. Why would they obey any OTHER kind of driving law... ONLY thing about Pattaya that pisses me off on a daily basis is the idiot asshole drivers who don't have a clue what they are doing.

Will you?

If a farang gets suspended for turning left on a red light a couple of times - a common occurrence - he/she will probably not drive.

That will leave mostly non-farangs on the roads. Think of that scenario.

Not surprising that many do turn left on the red light when the sign in English says "Turn left waiting light"..how does that mean "No left turn on red"?

Yes, if that makes any sense to you at all, you've been living here too long.

Hi,

The Thais have their own idiosyncratic way of driving. Why not let them continue in their own way ?

:clueless

"let them"? I don't think anyone on here has much choice about that.

BTW, in my experience, the worst drivers in Thailand are the non-Thais, especially westerners...can't tell you how many times I see someone driving in a pushy, arrogant, non-yielding way, and come up alongside them and it's a farang.

Thais do break the rules (a lot!), but they are generally quick to yield and accomodate others. Westerners get bull-headed about it and tend to mess up the whole rhythm of the driving scene.

Hi,

About this type of "No Turn Left at Red Light" panels:

I saw Police checking that people stop at red this morning, and again this afternoon, at 3rd Rd & Pattaya Tai, but not at their usual location: they were on 3rd Rd stopping people arriving from South Rd (like Tukcom) and turning left towards Central Rd.

I only stayed there a few minutes, at red light waiting to go towards Sukhumvit, but saw them stop many vehicles in this short time. (bikes, motorbike taxis (yes), cars, and even a bahtbus (yes!)). Too far to see and count well, but at least 6 policemen.

Yeah I saw them doing a stint at the Klang/3rd junction about 10 days ago, anyone turning left off Klang to go south.

My usual turn is onto ArunaThai and waiting there one is likely to get pushed forward!

This is infuriating as I regard it as minor issue and would rather see them catch those that double park on Klang (a bloody great big coach on Thursday night), those that run reds, particularly for 5 seconds after they became red etc etc. Turning left on red, done when clear, just keeps things moving!
