Android TV Boxes

Recommended Posts

Just got one a couple of days ago. 5000 baht.

About the size of a large smart-phone. Connects to my wi-fi. HDM lead from the box to theTV. Job done!

Found the controls laborious so got a cheap mouse……. and life was much easier.

I'm working my way round the channels and getting to know the thing…… Day one watched a couple of old "Robin Hoods…He's still riding thru the Glen'. Then the new, 'November Man' movie……..Then later watched England Vs Switzerland on ITV.

Basically it appears that I can get any live sport I want……..any film…….and any series. Even that weather-girl with the big charlies on Sky……..Can also view youtube, emails…..Google searches.

Bit of buffering during the England game but other-wise I'm very impressed.

Any tips, comments?

The more I use the one I got, the more I like it...I use it to watch downloaded movies, live TV, released movies, TV series...

Like jacko implied...it can take up your whole day and night...I only get an hour or so of watching a day if there isn't an important sporting event on...then, with American Football, I have my late nights, early morning games to watch...basically the same schedule as the World Cup games that ruined my sleep patterns.

For example, my team's next game is at 7:30am on Monday morning...that's usually about 2 hours after I normally go to sleep.

Still, these boxes are awesome..when I went up to the village, I had internet installed so I could use mine up there...made the time go lots faster.

I shall treat your comment Jacko with the contumely it deserves………. I've been out all day…….Swim here at 6 am….Then Royal Cliff gym and sauna... Breakfast…..Shopping….Over to the darkside…... 'Joy Joy bar'…... 5 games of pool at a bar somewhere near the lake, ( that apparently hosted Jimmy White last night)……..Then shag with and old dollop at The Butterfly. She had a face like Dot Cotton licking piss off a nettle but a great shag ….Then pool, peanuts and a beer at a bar near my condo. Shortly off to a restaurant for my last meal of the day……...

Then…….Phew….The Box!!! and some wine…….Wilbur Smith…….. and bed. Honest Jacko, by 5 pm I'm 'Donald' !!!

MM…..You're right!….. One of the benefits of the android system is that most hotels have TVs with HDM sockets and wi-fi in the room……..So it's handy for trips too.

Is there a software version of this that can be run on a laptop?

Most of the content is available using the media program XBMC, and yes, you can do pretty much everything the android box does on a laptop.

I find the small form factor and low price of the android box to be more convenient than hooking up a PC to my TV set..that's just my preference.

Hi MM,

I know you are a guru on IT matters, can I ask what internet package/provider you went with up in the village and price per month please?

Thanks in advance,

Kev

My girl can feed one the the boxes live tv from here iPhone hotspot using her 3G package....

But there's been a few problems installing the boxes with true move as they block streaming content as they have a streaming package of there own.

i would tell anyone not to use true move and to use TOT or 3BB and they don't seam to care and will unblock all content for you.

The only choice available up there was TOT, so that's what I got.

I had to run the ADSL line myself from the closest DSLAM (point of presence) to the house...rather, I had to pay them to run their line to the house.

Since we didn't buy or install any concrete mounted poles, they just ran the wire through the trees.

Not sure……set it up and threw all the bumph away.

Just says android on the top. Model Best quad core on the bottom.

One of the best ways to test the box install antutu bench mark on the box and see the rating score.

there's loads on online stores you can compare the box against.

I'm a bit miffed about my inability to find a working stream for an NFL game Monday morning. I must have spent a half hour poking around trying to find one.

Actually, I'm probably better off for not having seen the game anyway..it was a fiasco.

I find live sport its weakest feature. I struggled to find a decent link to the recent Arsenal Vs Man City fixture....While a mate found an excellent Arab link to the game.

How do you get around the geoblocking ? Did you set up a proxy on the Android box ?

On the box I got there's an icon to click that does just that. Once you've clicked the icon you turn-on two functions and hey presto!

I have XBMC set up on an old laptop that i wouldn't use for travelling. Plenty of tutorials on you tube about how to set up. I use a wireless mouse and keyboard setup. Last time i checked i had 346 live channels. Found that I don't watch it that much because of time difference problems. I used it on Sundays night to watch sky sports 1 football. Three different channels were buffering a lot before i found one that was OK to watch. As MM said the convenience and form factor of an android box are a no brainer for people who don't want to carry a laptop, mouse etc. BTW XBMC is being renamed Kodi.

How are these boxes working at the moment within Thailand?

There are problems with International feeds that will take us into next month.

I can't say till Monday morning, since I don't watch live feeds until the NFL games come on.

I was watching Al Jazeera America a day ago, and it did stop occasionally, so that might be an effect of the sluggish internet in Thailand.

The only problem is with True Move as they block the streaming outside of Thailand.

I have installed over 300 boxes and this is how i've found out what true do....

i don't have any problems installing boxes on TOT, 3BB and sometimes on SOPHON we call out the engineer to re configure the settings and puang sorts that out.

True move / vision will not work as they sell a streaming package and they block all other streaming... so if anyone is thinking of getting the IPTV then don't use True for your internet service.

I don't believe so, at least wrt to internet access going East from Thailand.

I am talking of a recent issue with ALL internet access, basically with CAT who dominate international traffic.

Yes I am on True, and perhaps the limited access which is shared out will impact each ISP differently, but may slow things down until it is repaired, next month.

I am certainly getting a lot of problems, accessing Pattaya Talk and Thai Visa and other sites, for 4 days now.

after installing many boxes and seeing it for my self i believe true restrict your international streaming as i've seen this over the last 6 months and not over the last week.

true has its own servers and all the data passes thru there own network before heading on to the international network.

True have a package called true vision and its going to be using the the internet more and more so they don't allow you to stream from outside of thailand Unless you have there full package.

i ask every customer what is there service provider and i have an idea of how it all works.
