I am not BigDUSA

;)

I mentioned the special because the best places to buy fish and chips from are those that have a high turnover which means the oil is kept at a consistent temperature. In a lot of restaurants and bars this is more likely to happen when fish and chips is on their special board.

I was joking.

Living in Scotland I do miss chippy mushy peas and gravy ,

as I get to Pattaya more than my home town , I do make the odd vist to the JF ,

The food hits the spot , and the service is fine will admit the staff tend to just do their job , which is fine by me , as it's not a bar

One of the girls did strike up a conversation with me once , when a pair of Russian women

sat down asked for a menu took a look , dropped it on the table and left ,

That said maybe the OP took the term Jolly Friar too literally ,

I thought the Jolly Friar had shut to be honest. I ate there a couple of times when it first opened. It was pretty dreadful especially the chips. South East Asia is not the place to go for good fish and chips but Frydays at New plaza is about the best in Pattaya IMHO.

By the way, I would recommend www.magpiecafe.co.uk if you are anywhere near Whiby, North Yorkshire. They are the best fish and chips I've had. Ever

The one time I thought about going in there, there was about a quarter mile queue outside. Tried to book for the following evening, and was told that reservations could not be made. To hell with that! Still, it can't be much better than Steel's at Cleethorpes, or Anstruther Fish bar, to name but two. Make sure the fih is reallly fresh and "Always" fry in animal fats, seems to be the winning formula.

It still must be better than anything on the west coast of the USA where all we have is chain fast food restaurants.

Come on, MLC!

That's pure baloney.

Go to the SF Bay Area and you'll find a slew of great restaurants...even very good fish and chips!

Up on Fisherman's Wharf perhaps. Maybe in Monterey. But none that I know of in the south bay.

Even chain restaurants like Red Lobster only offer passable seafood. I am not sure if The Fish Market offers them but they don't have as good a seafood as one might expect.

That is my experience. If that is baloney, so be it.

In the UK, you do not need to go to great restaurants for good fish and chips.

Lots of small, independent restaurants in SF. You just need to get away from the chain restaurant fixation. I've never set foot in a Red Lobster BTW.

I lived there for a decade, and never spent time in chain or fast food places..well, except for Clown Alley on Columbus.

I am not an expert on seafood in San Francisco.

My perspective on this topic was that Jolly Friar and other places mentioned in Pattaya were kind of hole-in-the-wall places. Small businesses.

That in mind, those types of places here tend to be fast food chains (San Francisco is an exception I expect).

In the UK, fish and chips is much more common. I believe you can get it in pubs. I have seen movies where it was served from trailers at the beach.

Again I am no expert on the food industry and would love to find some real fish and chips here that use cod and not some lesser tasting fish species. As San Francisco is four hours from me, I do not think I will be going there for fish and chips.

I am sorry to say MLC that good 'Fish and Chips' has to be searched out in the UK too these days.

Good chippies exist but so do poor ones.... for example I don't rate those that double up as a Chinese Takeaway. They have started using mystery fish, and if it say 'Fish and Chips', rather than Cod and Chips, you might be eating a Mekong bottom feeder! I have even asked 'what type of fish is it?' and been met with a confused look. (They don't want to tell me or don't even know)

Harry Ramsdens is a UK chain for Fish and Chips, last time I ate at one of their places the stuff was pretty good, but over-priced. My opinion might have been swayed by the fact I could get a pint with it!

This is the point I had issue with. The west coast is found on the coast, like San Francisco, not the central valley.

There's lots more than chain restaurants on the west coast...even fish and chip places.

Elsewhere in the "western region", I'd not dispute your claim.

I used to be in a dart league and would have fish and chips in downtown San Francisco at a dumpy place called Edinburgh Castle. I believe it closed around 2007. Their F&C were served in SF Chronicle newspapers.

like I said. I am not driving 4 hours for fish and chips.

You proved my point that good fish and chips are not easy to find.

I spent from age 5 until retirement in San Jose. Not Fresno. It is a long drive to find really good fish and chips.

You don't drive two hours round trip just for fish and chips.

My experience is different from yours.

As I am not looking to cause problems I apologize if I in any way misled you folks here.

Some of these in San Jose have promise!

I only mentioned San Francisco because you didn't specify any particular place on the west coast...I'm trying to make sure people don't think of the west coast as only fast food places.

The way i remember when the place first opened. There was only one other customer in there. And the damned waitress didn't utter a word until i called her on it and asked her if her throat hurts when she speaks. When your paying a ridiculous 40 baht for a meal, sure, you live with it or maybe even expect but that's not the case here.

i would appreciate any shared thoughts on what your guys think of such service when it happens. Do you ignore it or does it annoy you? Thanks

The OP" s complaint was about the service staff ,

Joe
