BUDGET FARANG MEALS: 99bt specials, Malee S. Honey, your faves?

Recommended Posts

It is impossible to recommend the accommodation at Malee Apartment as the building is wracked with maintenance issues but all that is eclipsed by the price, quality.variety and value of its restaurant.

The Thai food is great and good value.- zero to mega-spicy - all around 100-200 baht a dish

PAD THAI 100 baht

Day 4 PadThai.jpg

SQUID KRAPOW 125 baht?

Day 4 Squid Krapow.jpg

The Western food is great and good value - try the burgers

CLUB SANDWICH 99 baht

Day 3 Malee 99bht Club Sandwich.jpg

They have Dutch and Indonesian dishes

PORK SATAY

Day Six Pork Satay at Malee.jpg

as the owner (he who is stingy on maintenance) is Dutch

The real treat is the 99 baht daily special

Day 3 Malee Special F and C sign.jpg

which seems to follow this rhythm based on the week:

3rd August to 10th August

MONDAY Chicken Breast with Mustard Sauce, Chips, Salad (eaten, no photo)

TUESDAY Pork Steak with Mushroom Sauce

WEDNESDAY Fish Chips and Peas (eaten, see photo)

Day 3 Malee Special F and C.jpg

THURSDAY Liver and Onions

FRIDAY Chicken Schnitzel and Potato Salad (eaten, no photo)

SATURDAY Chicken Curry and Rice or Chips

SUNDAY Chili Con Carne 99 baht OR Roast Chicken Dinner 129 baht (none left by evening)

(MONDAY Chicken Breast with Mustard Sauce, Chips, Salad......)

We are forever spoiled by this restaurant with its friendly staff and skilled kitchen team..... (other places are already "not as good as Malee"....)

Wehey!

Again good info - I have also enjoyed some of the specials - even considered staying there - but I guess it is better to stick with the restaurant.

Yes, you can get it from a cart for 35 baht or in the No Name at North Buakhao market for 50 baht etc etc etc etc. (In that respect expensive "sort of" - but not by how much you would pay for it in any restaurant in Pattaya where you can also get farang food).

I realize all that. In fact, I'm probably guilty myself of overpaying for Thai food. I guess I was just trying to alert anyone on a budget that you don't really have to pay 100 baht for Pad Thai.

Andy, have you tried Friar Tuck on Soi Lengkee? It's on the left hand side as you walk up from Soi Buakhao, maybe 20 or 30 metres past Steak & Co and Jolly Friar. Its a bit of a greasy spoon but good value. The Thai food is better than the falang food.

Bon appetit.

Hi capdagde,

I don't know this place, but the plates look nice and appetizing

You may just remove the "Budget meals" from the title because - as said above - someone really on a budget can eat similar Thai food for far less, and would probably not visit any restaurant that offers farang food.

Thank for the report

Another place to consider for your budget farang meals, (if you haven't already heard of it or been there), is Frydays on New Plaza which has a good reputation. A UK style chippy with fish (dory) and chips starting from 99 baht.

If your walking down from Soi Buakhao, its in one of the shop houses on the right hand side of New Plaza near second road. I'm not sure of his opening hours but don't think he opens until about 4pm.

Bon appetit

While you're at D apartments there's a place behind the currency exchange, on the corner just south of Wok n Rok,that advertises ribs from 49 baht. The 49 baht portion only contains three ribs but you can pay more for larger portions. There's a decent amount of meat on the ribs, they are quite tender and the sauce is tasty. Maybe not the best ribs you will ever eat but good value.

Cafe Pittini is also another good place in that area. Specials start from about 149 baht rather than 99 baht but the food is good for the price. The place is well run and always seems to be doing good business when I go in. They do excellent coffee and the paninis are good for a change.

A picture of the fish and chips from Frydays (mushy peas are extra)

Extra small?

Extra small?

Chips look good though, and peas also look authentic, albeit in miserly proportions.

Not the biggest portion of fish and chips that I have ever had but filling enough. I couldn't eat a UK size portion anymore.

True, nor I, but I actually meant the portion of mushy peas.

I once had Fish and Chips at the Golden Ferret which is in the New Plaza, it was pretty good and very cheap. That was a year ago, is that still worth a visit?

I haven't eaten at the Ferret for a while but haven't heard anything bad about it either. The steak and kidney pudding special on a Thursday was my favourite there.? Edited by tallguy

The Irish Wolfhound about 50m down on Soi 4 Pratamnak has some cheap meals and they are quite good. It's a bit out of the way from where you guys are staying but maybe it might intersest some people.

I had a pork chop with mash, peas and gravy a couple of days ago. It was180฿ But the pork chop covered half of the large plate. I'll check out some others on their menu.
