The Rock Kitchen, Soi Khopai 9

Wow, that lifts the Bruschetta out of the "finger food" category! Looks delicious though: Is the menu just Italian (with obligatory Thai dishes of course) or is it International?

I always find that a/c or excessive fan action cools my food down far too quickly, and a lot of places are not great at getting "piping hot" dishes out to you in Thailand in the first place anyway. So my preference is "al fresco" here in Pattaya, but not exclusively so.

I don't get the impression it's an Italian place..the chef is Thai, but grew up in Australia where she was trained as a chef.

I hesitate to assign a category to the food choices, since I've only glanced at the menu. I usually go for the "special" for the day, which she posts on Facebook...if it looks good, I'm likely to go there, since it's quite close to my place.

Next time I go, I'll take a harder look at the menu and see if I can figure out if there's any particular category. Certainly they offer Thai dishes.

I guess I'll have to go back right away :P

In the meantime, here are some of the specials she has posted recently...

Marinara pasta plus a glass of red or white wine for just 200baht

Wow, that pork chop looks really, really good. I'm in town in a couple of weeks. Must swing by to try that and the delicious-looking bruschetta.

It does indeed look good and the prices are very low for farang food. Too bad it's a bit out of the way for me or else I would have already tried it on the basis of this thread. Really useful heads-up and recommendation for those who live/stay in the vicinity or have their own wheels.

The prices and the relatively large portions might make this even acceptable to our most ardent frugal consumer :P

Further to this place, I popped in today for the Salt and pepper calamari served with salad for 90baht! I normally don't like calamari here in Thailand, preferring the Mediterranean batter fried style, which I've not seen much of here.

Rock Kitchen nailed it today with this dish...

I also photographed the menu for anyone who wants to give them a try...

I think you get the idea of the place now. If it's convenient for you to try, and for many expats living in South Pattaya, it can be, this is a new (1 month old) business where the young chef is doing her best to put out good, fresh food every day at a price that almost makes me feel guilty.

Ha Ha! I wasn't taking the piss out of the language difficulty, but I was amused at the way the English written language was adapted. My written Thai is pretty rough - in fact appalling, but my Thai girl seems to be able to sort it out.

Evil's use of "terra cotta" was also amusing in his post on the Deli Diner: "I finished the meal with panna cotta with strawberry sauce. I had actually wanted the creme caramel, but the waitress told me the last one had "broken apart." I don't know if that meant she'd dropped it on the floor or something else had gone wrong with it, but the terra cotta was fine as a substitute." I didn't comment on that one, but I had to this time.

Please don't think I am being critical, I just have that sort of sense of humour.

I live right down the street from this place. I have been there twice so far and was happy with both meals. One was the spaghetti carbonara and the second time was the Thai beef salad. Will be back again soon

Good food at a good price.

I would think that is keeping you alive instead ;-)

Posted from my mobile so I blame any spelling errors on that.

This is another little gem of a place that you have found martin.......... :thumbup

Looks like you may be a good few pounds heavier by the end of the weekly specials........ :P

Okay, sorry to possibly bore you with yet more praises of The Rock Kitchen, but I continue to be astounded with the quality and value of the meals that are prepared by the chef.

Today I went for the special, but it was gone by the time I got there, so I opted for the tomato bruschetta and the pasta with chicken and pesto.

The bruschetta was huge as usual, and definitely took the edge off my appetite to the point where I worried about how I'd manage the pasta.

Tomato Bruschetta 80 baht

Not to worry..the chicken pasta with pesto was so good, I exceeded my normal meal intake to finish it. The pesto is made with the order with fresh sweet basil, lots of Parmesan cheese, bounteous olive oil and, instead of pine nuts which are hard to find, she used cashew which had a fine flavor anyway. It was just superb...probably the best pesto I've had in recent memory. The chicken was tender and the pasta was cooked beyond al dente, but to my taste, just at the right level. Lots of fresh cherry tomatoes in the bowl as well.

Chicken pesto pasta..140 baht.

Under the chicken and fresh basil leaves is the most delightful pasta with fresh made pesto sauce

In my defense, I do live close to the Rock Kitchen, and find it convenient to pop over for a meal. It's a journey of exploration where I look forward to each day's creation...aside from my order today, I've not even gotten to the regular menu.

Apologies (in part) for that. We went there with intentions of the "a la carte" fare, but then saw the Cod special; right up my street :thumbup. Delicious it was too! :P

I found the Rock Kitchen and had the shrimp pasta with pesto and was very happy with my choice. Probably a failure of imagination on my part to not order the grilled duck breast which was the special.

Kamon asked if I was happy with my food and when I said was, she asked again to make sure I wasn't just being nice.
