Worst Hotel in Thailand for Punters?

Recommended Posts

Twenty to 30 years ago, a fair number of people who stayed at the Atlanta agreed with the owner's "ideological" positions on issues like sex tourism and the ecology. However, even back then, the place was very outdated and run down. The rooms didn't have TV or radio; the building didn't have an elevator and some of the rooms lacked A/C.

Today it's even worse. Twenty more years of wear and tear on facilities that are never updated or improved. There's no WiFi for the guests' use. The place has gone from quaint and eccentric to a dump. I can't imagine anyone choosing to stay at the Atlanta for any other reason than dire economic necessity.

I have no idea what the place charges (later edit: 700 baht fan room) but under those circumstances I believe Khao Sahn Rd is where they head for.

I remember seeing this place many yeas ago, if I am correct there was a pretty obvious 'No Sex Tourists' sign prominently displayed on the front, which surprised me as I was exploring from The Nana hotel at the time.

The Atlanta was built in 1952, but has had the explicit "No Sex Tourist" policy since the 1980s. The facility is now hopelessly outdated, plus the outdoor areas are overrun with feral cats and dogs. The lobby area is apparently kept in good shape as it is sometimes used in TV and movie productions, but the rest is in terrible condition, according to a an ex-co-worker of mine.

The Atlanta is an old-fashioned place of charm and genteel character in downtown Bangkok with the secluded and secure atmosphere of a private club and the facilities of a small resort for sleaze-free and wholesome tourism.

Run on conservative principles and imperiously heedless of fashions and trends, The Atlanta is untouched by pop culture and post-modern primitivism. Its style and atmosphere hark back to gentler and more cultivated times.

The Atlanta is popular with cultured occidentals, with writers, academics, artists, cinema & theatre and other professional people, with dreamers and innocuous eccentrics, and their families, who can afford to stay at more expensive places but choose to stay at The Atlanta.

A rescued dog that was at The Atlanta for many years but has already died was a very useful member of staff. It normally welcomed guests who walk into The Atlanta, but if the dog barked at the guest, it was 100% certain that that guest was going to turn out to be a trouble-maker. The dog was never mistaken – not once.

WTF Is "post modern primitivism"?. Who are "Cultured occidentals"?.

They seem so far up their own arse it beggars belief.

I suppose it gives them a self satisfied sense of moral superiority over the mongers who come to Thailand. While they're stuffing their pieholes with granola and artisan bread pontificating on the current state of affairs in the USA.

Cunts.

WTF Is "post modern primitivism"?.

I have no idea how the owner of the Atlanta is using the term, but some cultural critics use it to mean certain social "manifestations" that have arisen since the 1950s, everything from rock 'n roll music, outlaw bikers and hippies through disco, football hooligans, punk rock, grunge, heavy metal and rap. Depending on who is doing the criticizing, the time frame could be limited to the post-hippy era, from about 1975 onward. The basic idea is that popular tastes in culture have degenerated and have yielded to more "primitive" instincts.

Who are "Cultured occidentals"?.

I think he means Western intellectuals who are culturally conservative.

I won't disagree!

I doubt that I would past the "UNDOMESTICATED" requirement so its unlikely that I would need to be concerned about the manner in which miscreants are thrown out.

I am only taking a guess but the xmas staff pictures might look ke this which would explain the no sex policy

As I'd read about it a few years back, when I saw the topic title, I just knew this hotel would be mentioned. I'm one of the "undomesticated" people they mention on their website.

They post, stand by, and enforce, their policy. No arbitrary bullshit that is so typical in Thailand.

I wouldn't fit in there, because of their policy, but I respect what I'll call their fortitude.

Board members sometimes get upset over joiners' fees. The Atlanta Hotel in Bangkok is a lot worse.

A few years ago, someone spoofed The Atlanta Hotel "Sex Tourists Not Welcome" site and replaced The Atlanta Hotel with The Nana Hotel. Guys on the the internet went bonkers before realizing that it was a hoax and not the end of the world.

That reminds of the April 1st column by Stickman in 2012 that said regulations would be changed in Thailand to make it much more difficult for tourists to bring girls back to their hotels. It caused a lot of discussion on the punter boards, including two threads on Talk.

Most members of Talk had caught on that it was joke, but that wasn't true on all the boards. Stickman himself said the April 1st column generated a huge email response, but only a few people realized it was a joke.

The guy says his staff will go head to head with a taxi driver if your overcharged...WTF I gotta stay at this place just one night just to experience this bizzaro world.

Warning - taxis with turbo-charged meters

There are rogue taxi drivers operating vehicles with rigged meters. These illegal meters are controlled by the driver who may speed up the meter from a slow tick-over to turbo-charged increments. For most passengers and guests of The Atlanta, the turbo-charged meter remains a rare occurrence, but one about which you should know.

What to do with a turbo-charged meter readout? If your meter reading is suspiciously high and you think that you may be a victim of a turbo-charged meter, remain calm. Do not alert the taxi driver that he has been rumbled. Make sure that the taxi reaches its destination directly outside The Atlanta, at the far end of Soi 2 Sukhumvit. Remove your personal effects from the taxi immediately, then make your excuses (such as you need to change your money for Thai currency) and summon help from the Reception staff at the hotel who will deal with the matter on your behalf. Never leave your personal effects unattended in the taxi while dealing with a problem relating to fares.
