What second childhood, haven't finished the first. Been pretty much my philosophy to living these past six decades.

 

Seen during those years a few close friends lose that spark for fun with the result they aged rather quickly. My parents quite often questioned my lifestyle choices and were quite vocal in their disapproval. Sad really as with my own adult children I remain mute on imposing my will on how they live their lives. Instead I take pride in how they are finding their own path in life.

 

Another motto I've always lived by is "work is a means to afford my time off". I think that's what particularly rankled my parents. But I've been fortunate to follow a career path doing what I really enjoy, computer programming/consulting, which brought with it a decent chunk of change to pay for many vacations, three failed marriages, and still have enough left over to fund an adequate retirement account.

 

As for the failed marriages, not my ex-wives fault. They were and still are good women. It's just that they, like most, lost that spark for fun and their lifestyle choices changed from when we first met.

 

Looking back it's not the work I remember with great fondness, it's the many and varied sport activities I've mastered and participated in. Friends joked that my attention span was measured in 2 - 3 years after which I moved on to a new sport. If I were to self-diagnose I would say I have adult ADD.

 

Still looking forward to what the next couple of decades bring me.

I was watching some program about Germany years ago and this German guy was a real workaholic. He said about the difference between the Germans and the French, "The Germans live to work, the French work to live."

Very true. My boss was younger than me and was a workaholic. Although I had contemplated early retirement, his illness and death from cancer did a got me to make up my mind for me and actually retire.

These philosophies have served me well. And I have been happily retired now for well over 24 years.
